Sad News

eiderling2

Since she knows much more about birds than I do, I decided to take Jodi from Cape Ann Wildlife’s recommendation to find an eider raft of sitters and young about the same age as the orphan duckling to release him to, in the hopes they would accept and take him in.  I walked all around Rocky Neck with him until I saw a crèche of 4 sitter aunties and a bunch of ducklings near a dock.  I went to the end of the dock and held up the baby who cheeped loudly and the eiders looked up at him while eyeing me suspiciously.  I asked them to please take him and set the duckling into the water.  He started to paddle but then immediately keeled over on his side and died.  I fear the 52 or so degree water was just to much of a shock for his little body which had become accustomed to being in a warm environment.  As I walked away, I looked back and the eiders were heading in his direction, although he was rapidly being pulled away by the current and there was nothing they could do for him.  It was very sad and I feel awful, although I and everyone who got to meet and know him was enriched by the experience.

New Contemporary Gallery Opening in Downtown Gloucester, June 5th

Untitled-3

65 Middle is opening it’s doors as Gloucester’s first gallery and project space featuring new and contemporary art culture. Founded in 2015 by Elizabeth Randlett, a former Brooklyn based creative director with strong Gloucester roots, 65 Middle is a multi-disciplinary project space in the downtown area of the city. The contemporary raw gallery is a platform for emerging and established artists from LA and New York, offering it’s patrons a look into a new time and culture of art.

Please join us in welcoming Los Angeles based painter and multi media artist Harrison Driggs Fraley to 65 Middle where he will be presenting his solo exhibition, Take Care & Control.

HARRISON DRIGGS FRALEY

“Take Care & Control”

June 5 – July 5, 2015

Inaugural Opening Reception: Friday June 5, 4pm – 7pm

65middle_harrisonfraley_2Harrison Driggs Fraley’s work incorporates pharmaceutical beeswax, dye concentrates and processed drawing. “Take Care & Control” is a survey of material, and ultimately the remnant thereof, and explores how painting functions within a living experience. Performative and saturated, he implements wax and dye as a nod to the formal objectives regarding the ‘act’ and process of painting, while each surface is sized and titled after the French Neo-Classic painter Jean Ingres’ troubled lesser works. Combining the cynicism of new media culture and historical “baggage,” Take Care & Control encompasses a formal concern with painting’s relevancy, signature materiality, and a healthy disregard for the historical lineage of painting itself.

Harrison Driggs Fraley (b. 1986) currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his education at the Savannah College of Art and Design and Atlanta College of Art, 2005-2009.

Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include Take Care & Control, 65 Middle, Gloucester, MA, 2015; Best Wishes/Revenge, Western Canon Projects, Beverly Hills, CA, 2010, 2012

Upcoming and group exhibitions include Landschaft (Heresy) LDC, Joshua Tree, California 2015; Moving Spaces, traveling from OAK DTLA, Los Angeles to OAK, New York City, 2015; Ryobi Room: Miami, Darlington Resort, Miami, Florida, 2014; Starving in the Middle of Nowhere, Werkarts, Los Angeles, 2014.

The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday – Friday 10 to 2 and Saturday – Sunday from 12 to 5.

Gloucester MA, May 21, 2015:  The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) Only Excellent Music series is pleased to present Mason Daring and Jeanie Stahl, celebrating forty years of musical collaboration and a brand new release!

Daring and Stahl, core members of the Passim All-Stars, will bring their sweet harmonies and humor to the Cultural Center stage with bassist Richard Gates on Saturday June 13. Their new album, entitle “40” features songs ranging from folk and jazz to a little country, original tunes and some classics.

Mason is a noted film and TV composer and record producer and Jeanie a premier vocalist. In the 70’s they were the darlings of the Cambridge folk scene, recorded two albums together and garnered national attention with Mason’s song, Marblehead Morning, which also got them a spot on the Today Show. Mason went on to become an award winning composer for film and TV (The Secret of Roan Inish, Eight Men Out, Music of the Heart, themes for Frontline and Nova and more). Jeanie continued performing as a featured vocalist on videos for Masterpiece Theatre and for films, and in addition recorded solo albums on the Daring Records label. In collaboration with her husband, John Jacobsen, she executive produced the Oscar nominated IMAX film, The Living Sea.

Ohana’s Prix Fixe – Chef Enx lets his creativity shine through

For More Cape Ann Dining News-

Ohana's avatarcapeanneats

Merriam-Webster defines Prix Fixe as “a complete meal offered at a fixed price.” Ohana defines Prix Fixe as “a delicious three course dinner with ever changing choices.”  “The food is a delicious odyssey of tastes.”

In addition to popular regular items such as Mongolian Baby Back Ribs (indescribably good), Ohana Caesar Salad (a beautifully presented de-constructed salad) and Butterfish (Misoyaki marinated- seared and baked to perfection), Chef Enx creates new items on Ohana’s Prix Fixe menu.   This menu changes regularly with choices of 5-6 appetizers, 4-5 main courses and 2 desserts.

Here are some examples of what New American Cuisine can be all about:

Mochiko Dusted Bass, Pork Belly, Watermelon Curry, Scallion Lo Mein. This dish combines subtle Asian spices from Japan, India and China with fresh local ingredients.

What is the official State Ship of Massachusetts?

That’s a question the Al Bezanson sometimes asks friends sailing on his schooner Green Dragon. He’ll get answers like “Old Ironsides,” “Mayflower II,” or “Arabella.”

Wrong! The correct answer, as Al points out, is the Gloucester schooner Ernestina-Morrissey, originally the Effie M. Morrissey, built in Essex in 1893-94. In 1995 then-Governor Bill Weld named her the official vessel of the Commonwealth.

effie

How did this little schooner qualify over all other contenders? Through a history of international outreach and service, nobly representing the maritime heritage of Massachusetts. She performed ably in hook-and-line fishing out of Gloucester that preserved fish stocks, in two decades of scientific expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, in wartime military missions, as a vital link between Cape Verde islanders and family members who had emigrated to New Bedford, and as an at-sea schoolhouse for educating thousands of Massachusetts school children in the wonders of their ocean environment. Nearly lost time and again, she is now undergoing complete restoration.

The story is told in Chester Brigham’s book Phoenix of the Seas, to be launched with a presentation and signing at the Cape Ann Museum on Saturday, June 13 at 3:00. Chet will also be introducing the book at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Wednesday, June 24 at 7:30.

phoenix

Those planning to attend the Cape Ann Museum launch are invited by Harold Burnham to a half-price sunset sail in Gloucester harbor in his schooner Ardelle from 6:00 to 8:00 that evening. Tickets available on the Ardelle website, schoonerardelle.com, and at Maritime Gloucester. Mention “Phoenix” when ordering

Knock, Knock.

I love this sound so much!  I couldn’t find the bugger to save my life, but I enjoyed stopping at the end of my street the other night to hear him do his thing.  Not going to lie, I couldn’t help but think, “Ouch.”
