The pier of the Rockport Lobster Company collapsed yesterday at around 16:00 (4:00 PM). Luckily the owner was outside at the time when he heard the floor inside collapse with a roar. Approximately 10,000 ponds of Lobsters were lost, the family owned business has been operating since 1990.
Gloucester Tourist from Harrisburg PA Via Australia
Ron and his lovely wife from Harrisburg Pennsylvania, stopped by to pick up 20 lobsters at Rockport Lobster Company, before heading back home. Ron recently visited Australia, and picked up a “CROCODILE GANDHI” hat made from Kangaroo hide.
During their stay in Gloucester they watched Captain Muniz from the F/V Lily off load a tuna yesterday, they were hoping to pick up the Tuna Head to take back home as well; however it was long gone.
A most enjoyable encounter with Ron and his wife.

Local High School Student Graduates from Sea Cadet Recruit Training
Gloucester resident receives top honor in Naval Sea Cadet Recruit Training
Elizabeth Schuster, age 14 of Gloucester, a member of the David G. Ouellet Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), recently completed a two-week recruit training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. At this training, Schuster joined over 200 other young women and men from across New England in completing a rigorous program, which is based on the U.S. Navy’s recruit training curriculum. Sea Cadet boot camp is designed for youth and instills teamwork, discipline and leadership skills in participants.
At the end of this challenging two-week training, Schuster was named Honor Graduate from her group of 40 peers. This award is extremely competitive and granted only to a cadet who displays top performance in several key areas, including leadership, teamwork, motivation and accountability.
During the two-week training, Schuster’s activities included swim qualifications, military drill, damage control, and physical training. “It was a very challenging two weeks, but I met so many great people from around the country and I learned a lot,” Schuster said. Schuster is the daughter of Michael and Heidi Schuster of Gloucester and granddaughter of Louis and Wendy McGrath of Gloucester and Robert and Helen Schuster of
Edinboro, PA.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered non-profit civilian youth organization for young people, ages 11 through 17 and is supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Every year cadets participate in training opportunities such as Navy Special Warfare, SCUBA, field and medical training, photojournalism, military police science and sailing. The program teaches them how to successfully lead groups of their peers and will also inspire them to become leaders in their schools and communities.
The local Sea Cadet unit in Gloucester is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Gloucester Sea Cadets train at the U.S. Coast Guard station two Sundays a month, and also at The Village Training Field in Danvers, MA. For more information, please contact ENS Phillip Strauch at pstrauch@gloucesterseacadets.org or visit the program’s website at www.seacadets.org

FLEDGLING HOMIE RESCUE UNDERWAY AT SEVEN SEAS WHALE WATCH (EDITED)
UPDATE: HOMIE LEARNED TO FLY!
Heather Dagle from 7 Seas Whale Watch reports that this sweet fledgling appeared several days ago after its nest, which was located at Fisherman’s Wharf, was destroyed in a recent storm. He/she has yet to learn how to fly however, its Mom stops by daily to feed it regurgitated food. After seeing how much the fledgling enjoyed splashing around in a bowl of water placed there by Heather and Kate, I dropped off a big galvanized tub. Heather promises to send a picture if he jumps in!
Did you know that 7 Seas Whale Watch was voted best Boston’s Best Whale Watching company by WGBH-Boston Reader’s Poll? Check out their website Here.

What to Do if You Find a Seal on the Beach
Good Morning Gloucester reader Anita sent along a photo of a young seal perched on the Annisquam. It reminded me to post my Seal PSA, which I think is a good idea to do annually, especially at this time of year when many young seals beach themselves. They are usually not injured or ill and only need to rest, or occasionally, to escape danger (think shark). Never approach a hauled out seal; simply leave it to recuperate and make its way back to the water in its own time.
Thanks so much Anita for submitting your photo!
