ROBERT WALSH NAMED GLOUCESTER STAGE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

RobertWalsh.212Gloucester Stage is pleased to announce that Robert Walsh has been named Artistic Director of the 36-year old non-profit professional theatre, effective immediately. Walsh’s appointment as Artistic Director continues a 20-year relationship with Gloucester Stage as both an actor and director as well as serving as Interim Artistic Director since December, 2014. During Gloucester Stage’s 2015 season Walsh directed Enda Walsh’s The New Electric Ballroom and currently appears in the New England premiere of Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester Blue, which has extended it run through October 11.

According to the President of Gloucester Stage’s Board of DirectorsRobert Boulrice, “This summer we conducted an exhaustive national search that generated 86 applicants. I am delighted to say that after a whole lot of work, all we had to do was remove the “Interim” tag from Bob Walsh’s Artistic Director title! The cream rose to the top, and it was locally churned.” Reflecting on the Walsh’s accomplishments as Interim Artistic Director, Boulrice continues, “Bob has been at the artistic helm for the entire 2015 season. Many patrons have commented that this has been our best season ever. He is already at work finding plays for our next season, news of which we want to tease our audiences with before the 2015 season ends. As an actor/director, Bob Walsh has graced the Gloucester Stage for many years. As our Artistic Director, it will be great having him program the plays that will appear on it.”

Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit Promoting Optimal Wellness for Body, Mind and Spirit

Definition of ‘Retreat’ –
  • a quiet or secluded place in which one can rest and relax.
  • a period of seclusion for the purposes of prayer and meditation.
In this fast-paced, busy culture where can you find ‘sanctuary?’
Where can you escape to for healing the mind, body, and spirit?
With its many beautiful beaches, rocky outcroppings and gardens with oceans views, and wooded pathways to choose from almost any spot on Cape Ann will generally do! But on the special occasion of the August 15th/150th Anniversary of the birth of USUI Sensei, (founder of the Japanese Healing Method/Art of Reiki Ryoho,) I chose to drive 5 hours to an isolated monastery in the Catskill Mountains.

While recording audio for my Monarch film at the same field over a several week period, occasionally I came upon a deer family. Not quick enough to get more than a fleeting snapshot however, these two deer were spotted peering at me while I waited in vain for their return, so that I could peer back at them!

Mayor Romeo Thekan and Committee for the Arts Public Meeting with Arts Advisor Elizabeth Keithline

Last night, the first of three meetings to engage community members in determining a public art policy was held at City Hall. Consultant Elizabeth Keithline of Wheel Arts Administration has been hired to gather information and make recommendations. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD – I urge everyone to attend these meetings at this critical crossroad in our changing public art policy!

Keithline asked to hear from Gloucester residents about the following questions:

  • What is your vision for public art in Gloucester? What would you like to see happen here?
  • Do you have any recommendations on how that vision can become a reality?
  • Name and/or describe public art in Gloucester that you like or don’t like.
  • Do you have any recommendations on how Gloucester can improve its public art processes?
  • Do you have any specific recommendations on what a public art policy for Gloucester should contain?

Email your responses, or any information you care to share, to elizabethkeithline@gmail.com. All comments are unattributed. Keithline will be conducting a public meeting at City Hall on Wednesday, September 30th at 7:00 pm. She will present a second meeting for City Council on October 13th. A third meeting will be held on November 10 to present a draft of the new policy.

The Committee advises City officials on the value of a diverse, cultural life as well as encourages art programs within public schools.  (From the City of Gloucester website).

Saturday at Rockport Art Association

Natura Naturans Meets Natura Digitalis
(Photography Exhibition)

Opening Reception – Sunday, October 4th, 2:00-4:00 PM
Rockport Art Association,
12 Main Street, Rockport MA 01966

This exhibition is a 2-person show of works by photographers Joe Reardon and digital artist Otto Laske which presents two different, but complementary, interpretations of Nature: what our eye sees more or less directly and what the mind imagines. These two interpretations are inter-related since the eye also imagines just as the mind sees.

In both artists’ work, the photographic or algorithmic capturing of nature produces endless varieties of fauna that turn into imaginary ones, and appear simultaneously as real and allegorical. While Reardon’s shapes represent real objects, their exquisite precision instantly turns them into allegories. While Laske’s shapes often have the energy of drawings, they are close enough to natural phenomena to evoke energies we sense in observing natural growth.

The show uses digital technology in the broadest sense in a way adapted to each artist’s predilections. It expands the notion of Nature beyond what can be seen, close by or at a distance, into what can be viscerally felt and experienced even with eyes closed.

This small group show will be on view through October 18th. The RAA is open Monday – Sunday and is free to the public.

Tonight! Danielle Miraglia joins The Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30pm 10.01.2015

dave sags

This Thursday at the Rhumb Line,I’m really bubbling over due to the return of Ms. Danielle Miraglia. You’re in for a treat! She was here once before and afterwards Fred had to scrub the ceiling to get the footprints off. She’s a really great singer. And she’s bringing along an intense melange of players.
First, there’s Mr. Blob Enik, spluttering paint-by-numbers glitarist, who often works with Mari Martin or even Madhouse. Then there’s Mr. Jim Gambino,,of Swinging Steaks fame, as our speculative multi-fingered keyboard whiz.Thumping handled by a truly great drummer, Mr. Steve Bankuti. I’ll be wheezing in the corner, trying to keep up. A truly magical night.Hours: 8:30 to 11:30.

Thank you to the Gloucester Housing Authority for partnering with us on this project.

It pays to listen to The GloucesterCast

Joey–I was pleased (thrilled actually) to learn today that the photo I submitted to the Gloucester Rotary Calendar project was selected!  I learned about the contest through GMG and was encouraged to send a photo along even though I am daily humbled by the photographic geniuses you have on hand.

I had just submitted the photo when I listened to podcast 147 where you mentioned a fall scene would probably have a good chance of being selected.  Mine is “Fall Reflection at Halibut Point”, so I guess you were right again!

So, thanks for the encouragement and we hope to stop by the dock next week for my husband Jim’s shirt.  I think we are arriving just in time for a storm.  Thanks again.  Pat D
