Dogtown Days

Join the Friends of Dogtown to kick off a weekend celebrating Dogtown!

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, a day dedicated to all things Dogtown on Saturday, October 17 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. Hear from expert panelists on topics ranging from artists inspired by Dogtown to the geology of Dogtown and everything in between. Dogtown Days is a celebration of the art, history, archaeology, geology, ecology and mystery of Dogtown, from the remains of its colonial settlement to its treasures along the trails through the watershed land and glacial heaths that lie at the heart of Cape Ann. Its 3,000 acres serve as the inspiration for Saturday’s panelists: Mark Carlotto, Mary Ellen Lepionka, Ed Becker, Chris Leahy, Ted Tarr, Noel Mann, Shep Abbott and Tom Halsted. Join these Friends of Dogtown as they explore the cellars of Dogtown, the Native Americans who lived there and the many insects and birds that call the habitats of Dogtown their home.

Following the Dogtown expert panel discussion, the Friends of Dogtown invite all audience members to join them for a reception with cake and ale in the Friend Room at the Sawyer Free Library nearby.

The show opens October 15th and runs through November 15th.
A reception for the artists will be held on October 17th from 6-8pm.

The Rockport Art Association
is proud to announce the:
Solo Show of Gloucester Artist,
Paul Ciaramitaro

with the opening of his exhibition titled “Gulls” on Sunday, October 18^th at 2pm.

Inspired by a book passage describing a seagull as a bird with long slender wings that feeds on fish, shell fish, crustaceans and garbage, Paul has observed the birds in flight and dining in parking lots on trash making note of their splendor and their ability to scavenge. Paul was inspired by these birds of character and their abundance and permanence in Cape Ann. Works on view will cover a variety of mediums where you can enjoy these magnificent creatures in action and at rest.

To see these works and the exhibition in its entirety, please visit the RAA at its 12 Main Street campus. As always, the Association for this show is open and free to the public.

Another fantastic option for this wonderful fall weekend is the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta!  Other than the obvious farm tour and apple picking, I’m not sure if there is another annual tradition that screams “Fall in Massachusetts” as loudly as the Head of the Charles.  If you’ve never been, you really should go.

Winter Dory Haul Saturday

This Saturday morning, October 17th at 8:30 AM we will be meeting at the Eastern Ave Self Storage to collect trailer and prepare for the winter storage of the race dories.  We need your help!!  If you have a small boat trailer or truck with hitch, or just a pair of hands please

Only two braved the rough seas and ferocious wind last Sunday to complete the annual Oarmaster’s Cup race off of Maritime Gloucester and out around Ten Pound Island.  It was an exciting race with several lead changes and some savvy drafting off the island which produced a new champion with Jimmy T.(right) beating Erik Dombrowski (left) to regain the cup!

Mark your calendar and please tell your friends. This is an important yearly fundraiser for the Essex Shipbuilding Museum so come join us Friday, Oct. 16th and have a great time. Greg Verga to Run Write-In Campaign for Councilor At-Large

Since the Mayoral preliminary election, I have heard from many, many citizens both in person and online urging me to run on a write-in bid to retain my Councilor-at-Large seat. It is truly humbling to be urged by my constituents again and again to fight for my seat and continue to serve the City of Gloucester.

After much reflection and discussion with family and friends I have decided that I will run a write-in campaign to remain your Councilor-at-Large. I cannot ignore the needs of the constituents whom I have served for so many years.

We are now 20 days away from the election. In order to build on the grassroots support I have already received, I will work each day to get my message out leading up to November 3rd. I will remain as accessible and transparent as I have always been as both a City Councilor and School Committee member l and everyone in Gloucester to check on my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WriteInGregVerga daily for how everyone can help. Each ballot will allow for the opportunity to vote for up to 4 candidates for Councilor-at-Large. I hope that each voter includes writing in “Greg Verga” on their ballot come November 3rd. I urge each citizen in Gloucester to commit to doing this and reaching out to others as well. I want to continue to serve our wonderful City and intend to for another term with your help.
