Beyond Measure initial screening

Hi Joey!

Waldorf School at Moraine Farm is one of approximately 20 educational institutions in the country offering this initial screening of Beyond Measure: Rescuing an Overscheduled, Overtested, Underestimated Generation from the director of critically acclaimed Race to Nowhere, Vicki Abeles. The screening is FREE Thursday, October 22 @ 7pm.

All are welcome to witness a positive picture of what’s possible in American education when communities decide they’re ready for change.  I was on a conference call with Vicki yesterday and I think she hit it out of the park again.  Time Magazine is currently working on a feature piece of this movie.  Interviews with internationally-known leaders in education, child development, creativity, motivation and academic equity are supported by real life examples of what’s working for schools all over the country. Change can be driven from the ground up.  This important movie shows us how.

If you would share this with your readers it may be of some real benefit.

Thanks!

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, a day dedicated to all things Dogtown on Saturday, October 17 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. Hear from expert panelists on topics ranging from artists inspired by Dogtown to the geology of Dogtown and everything in between. This program is free and open to the public. For more information, please email info@capeannmuseum.org or call (978) 283-0455 x10.

Dogtown Days is a celebration of the art, history, archaeology, geology, ecology and mystery of Dogtown, from the remains of its colonial settlement to its treasures along the trails through the watershed land and glacial heaths that lie at the heart of Cape Ann. Its 3,000 acres serve as the inspiration for Saturday’s panelists: Mark Carlotto, Mary Ellen Lepionka, Ed Becker, Chris Leahy, Ted Tarr, Noel Mann, Shep Abbott and Tom Halsted. Join these Friends of Dogtown as they explore the cellars of Dogtown, the Native Americans who lived there and the many insects and birds that call the habitats of Dogtown their home.

Following the Dogtown expert panel discussion, the Friends of Dogtown invite all audience members to join them for a reception with cake and ale in the Friend Room at the Sawyer Free Library nearby.

The Rockport Art Association
is proud to announce the:
Solo Show of Gloucester Artist,
Paul Ciaramitaro

with the opening of his exhibition titled “Gulls” on Sunday, October 18th at 2pm.

Gull photo

Inspired by a book passage describing a seagull as a bird with long slender wings that feeds on fish, shell fish, crustaceans and garbage, Paul has observed the birds in flight and dining in parking lots on trash making note of their splendor and their ability to scavenge. Paul was inspired by these birds of character and their abundance and permanence in Cape Ann. Works on view will cover a variety of mediums where you can enjoy these magnificent creatures in action and at rest.

To see these works and the exhibition in its entirety, please visit the RAA at its 12 Main Street campus. As always, the Association for this show is open and free to the public.

News from Latitude 43 – Outdoor Seating All Year + Seasonal Hours

Cape Ann Dining News-
http://www.capeanneats.com

sam's avatarcapeanneats

If you haven’t heard yet, we need to let you in on a little secret: Latitude 43 now has some serious heaters (trust us, these things are legit) so you can dine on their deck all year long. Picture it: Sipping cocktails and enjoying sushi, under the awing, while the snow literally falls around you.

Latitude for gmgBut let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, for now let’s focus on this glorious season: fall. The crisp, fall air, views of the harbor, a tasty beer (like the new pumpkin draft rotation*), all enjoyed while you’re warm and cozy outside on Latitude’s deck. It’s basically perfection.

Speaking of the changing seasons, starting the week of October 19th Latitude 43 and Minglewood Tavern’s seasonal hours will go into effect. Latitude 43 will be serving lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday; Minglewood will open at 4:00 PM Wednesday & Thursday and noon Friday…

The Photo of an Unidentified Girl from Gloucester taken by William A. Campbell (1971), was published in the  LIFE magazine America’s Triumphs and Tragedies.  I wonder if this young lady, now in her late forties and William Campbell, if they still live in Gloucester.

Head of the Charles Regatta

Another fantastic option for this wonderful fall weekend is the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta!  Other than the obvious farm tour and apple picking, I’m not sure if there is another annual tradition that screams “Fall in Massachusetts” as loudly as the Head of the Charles.  If you’ve never been, you really should go.

Read all about the event, the schedule, the participants, and more by following this link
