Some marine organizations call the Calico lobsters among the rarest but we usually see 5-0 of the a year at our dock. Far more rare are the true blue ones and pure white ones.

Bill Nye Quote of the Week from Greg Bover
“Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.”
Bill Nye (1955- )
A Washington, D.C. native, Nye graduated from the Sidwell Friends School before attending Cornell University, where he took an astronomy class from Carl Sagan and ultimately received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career at Boeing, where among other tasks, such as 747 hydraulic systems design, he made training films for other Boeing engineers and clients. This work led him to science education in general and in 1993 he created the series “Bill Nye the Science Guy”. His mixture of comedy and hard science made this show a hit on PBS and in schools as a teaching aid. Nye continues to advocate the teaching of science to children at an early age as a method of developing reasoning. He has publicly debated creationists and refutes their opinions at every opportunity. Nye holds a number of diverse patents and is in demand as a commencement speaker.

Cape Ann World War II Veterans
An exhibition of photography by Jason Grow was held on Saturday. Rick and I went to the Opening reception on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Gloucester City Hall. This exhibit was amazing. The photography of Jason Grow was very emotional. Seeing these World War II veterans and thanking them was terrific. The World War II Veterans who were there were so moved and seemed very happy. It was wonderful to see so many people visiting this exhibition.
Have you heard of Periscope? We Will Be Broadcasting a Live Interactive Stream of The Alicia Unleashed Podcast Taping Monday Night at 7PM
If you don’t know this about me, I’m a little challenged when it comes to the new age technical world.
Apparently there’s this new app called “Periscope”. People live stream themselves doing whatever they want. It could be playing in a band or watching the sunset or really anything you can imagine. (Get your mind out of the gutter)
So I thought why can’t we start broadcasting live all of the Alicia Unleashed podcasts? With this app you can actually interact live with the person that is broadcasting by texting questions or comments.
We will be using Periscope on Monday at 7pm when we record Alicia Unleashed 10th podcast!
Download the app and follow us: @ali4416

MONARCHS WEAPONIZE MILKWEED TOXINS
Although scientists have long known that the toxic sap that flows through milkweed veins, called cardenolides, can make a bird very sick if it attempts to eat a Monarch caterpillar, it was unclear whether the butterfly’s acquired adaption to the toxicity was a side effect that allowed the caterpillar to eat the milkweed or had developed separately as a defensive mechanism against predators. A Cornell University study recently published in Proceedings B of The Royal Society Publishing reveals that they have indeed evolved to weaponize milkweed toxins! Thank you so much to Maggie Rosa for sharing “The Scientist” article and you can read more about it here.
“Monarch butterfly caterpillars have evolved the ability to store toxins known as cardenolides, obtained from their milkweed diet, specifically to make themselves poisonous to birds, as has at least one other species of milkweed-munching caterpillar, according to a study published Wednesday (November 4) in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
“This finding is fascinating and novel,” Stephen Malcolm, a professor at Western Michigan University who studies cardenolides but was not involved in the new research, wrote in an email to The Scientist. “It is exciting to have evidence for the importance of top-down influences from predators.” Continue Reading
Please join me Thursday evening, November 12th, at 7pm at the Sawyer Free Library for my illustrated talk, Beauty on the Wing ~ Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly. Looking forward to seeing you there!
