On Wednesday November 11, Ken Bonfield & Steve Davison will rekindle their national touring under the banner, Artistry of the Guitar. For those used to the in-the-round shows Bonfield has presented in the past, this will be a bit different. As in most Artistry of the Guitar shows the two will each have a solo set lasting approximately 30 minutes, and that will be followed by 30 minutes of duets. The duets are a bit of a change and something audiences have been asking for since the very beginning. The music will be far ranging, from Celtic to Classical, Blues, Folk, Country, and include some good ol’ Travis thumbstyle fingerpicking. And as always they will be played on some amazing instruments; Bonfield’s Alan Carruth 11-string harp guitar and baritone guitar, and Davison’s Tony Yamamoto 12-string or his Sheldon Schwartz Oracle.
In this 90 minute workshop the guitarists will cover topics every guitarist should know; how to tune a guitar, how and when to change strings, how to properly hold the guitar, how to hold a pick, as well as discuss basic chord theory, and proper right and left hand technique. There will be plenty of time for Q & A. Bring a guitar, pencil, notepad and an open mind.
Last October, Gloucester’s Henri Smith chatted with Allen Toussaint in Allen’s dressing room at Berklee Performance Center. Check out Allen’s reaction to Henri’s song. Plus you’ll LOVE what Allen says about Amadee Castenell! You can see Henri and Amadee along with award-winning trumpeter Stanton Davis (who performed with Henri at Celebrate Gloucester) on December 5 right down the road at Beverly’s fully-restored, acoustically magical Larcom Theatre. Tickets available here.
As we honor those who give their lives in defense of our freedom, we thought we’d share perhaps the most eloquent account ever written by a soldier of what compels him to serve.

Special Guest: ALLEN ESTES!

Allen Estes has quietly-but-firmly held his tenure as Cape
Ann’s strongest original music artist for over three-and-a-half
decades under our very noses. His profound and loving lyrical
tributes to the local fishing community alone will surely stand
the test of time for generations to come. Allen has already
placed a personal stamp on our culture that will last forever.
To my definition, this is the true measure of success for us all. ~ Fly

I’m what you call a Velcro dog. I love to be with my owner! Chinese Crested dogs were bred for Therapy dogs so we love to be with our family all of the time. I would love nothing more than to eat, sleep and breathe you. I love to snuggle under the covers of your bed, ride in the passenger seat of your car and sit on your lap while you watch T.V. but I hate going in a crate! I am a Special needs adoption because I have severe skin acne and will need weekly scrubs and bathes with special shampoos to get my skin back looking the way it should. Know and love my breed? Have time for a special guy who will be loyal and true? Stop by the shelter to meet me or one of my furrier friends!

Hi Joe,
My son Griffin started a fundraising campaign last year to benefit Boston Children’s Hospital, as a way to give back for the exceptional care he received there during two successful surgeries. This year, he has partnered with the Boston Bruins Foundation, the Corey C. Griffin NHL Pro-Am Alumni Tournament, and Bruins Alumni, and he has raised his personal fundraising goal to $3,000. Hoping you can put a link up on GMG to help raise money and awareness. Griffin is also coordinating a charity open skate for Christmas week, where all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital. Last year Rick Middleton was kind enough to attend and give his support. More info will follow as we get closer to the event.

Boston Children’s Hospital is ranked #1 on U.S. News and World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals honor roll. More than offering great care, the hospital is known for its commitment to the Boston community—serving as the largest provider of health care to low-income children in our state. The hospital is also home to the world’s largest research center at a pediatric hospital, making discoveries that benefit both children and adults. Just one area of research we’re leading: concussions and injury prevention. Children’s Sports Concussion Clinic is a national leader in understanding and treating pediatric concussions, with a multidisciplinary research team and a clinical setting that receives more than 350 patient visits each month. Philanthropic support will advance critical research into this skyrocketing problem.
Thanks,
Andre
Don’t miss Jason Grow’s stunning Cape Ann World War II Veterans photography show on exhibit at Kyrouz Auditorium and open specially today, Veteran’s Day, from noon to four o’clock.
If you have a relative who served in WWII, bring a copy of a photo of them for the Memory Wall and post it (please don’t bring originals, they won’t be returned).
“This year, 2015, marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Thousands of men and women from Cape Ann – Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex – served our nation during World War II. More than 5,600 of roughly 25,000 residents from Gloucester alone joined the conflict serving in every branch of the military. Of those, 119 never made it home. As we recognize the end of that great conflict, we have to acknowledge that fewer and fewer of Our Greatest Generation remain. Their actions, their history, and their stories are an integral part of who we are as a nation. Though we continue to see conflict in the world, with men and women stepping up to serve our nation, it is unlikely that we will ever see such an epic, world-wide conflict again. My goal has been to photograph these remaining veterans from, or who now call home, Cape Ann, to honor and recognize their service to our country, and their place in our history. These are ordinary men and women who were called upon to do, at times, extraordinary things. To all our veterans, from every conflict, thank you. Currently on display at Kyrouz Auditorium in Gloucester City Hall – Gloucester Massachusetts – during business hours, through November.” To see the portfolio of WWII Veterans, visit Jason’s website here.
While I’m not often a fan of the movie version of some of my favorite books, this is one that I can’t wait to see.
If it is good enough for Nathaniel Philbrick, it is certainly good enough for me! And, with Ron Howard at the wheel, it really can’t go wrong.
Release Date scheduled for December 11th.

Chief John Horvath is pleased to announce that the Rockport Police Department acquired a new Polaris eBike to expand its policing efforts in town.
Police are now riding the Rapid Response Team Safety Model, which is specifically designed for police use. It can reach up to 20 miles per hour with the assistance of a 750 watt motor. Officers Michael Anderson, William Budrow, Daniel Mahoney and Philip Wesley are certified for patrol on the eBike.
“The bike will be a valuable addition to our community policing efforts and provide our officers with an effective means to navigate the neighborhoods of Rockport while interacting with residents,” Chief Horvath said.
The department received the bike on Oct. 27, through asset forfeiture funds from Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, who is committed to furthering community policing in his cities and towns.
“This was a great opportunity to use drug money to enhance this department’s ability to patrol areas not easily accessed by a cruiser, as well as to be more accessible to the citizens they serve,” District Attorney Blodgett said.
Polaris develops and designs their eBikes using the latest green, electric power technology in conjunction with a sleek design. This allows riders to navigate narrow streets and lanes, which are often difficult for emergency vehicles and patrol cars to reach quickly. In turn, first responders expand their range and arrive faster while conserving energy.
“Polaris eBikes are proud to be supplying the Rockport Police Department with our Rapid Response Electric Bicycle to enhance their bike patrol, to assist in their community outreach initiative and numerous town events,” Polaris President Adam Rand said.

Photos from “Gifts Of Gold In A Sicilian Kitchen With Sista Felicia: Harvest”, (purchased from the archives of Cape Ann Museum)
Mike’s Pastry Shop once located on Main Streets West End was “the” gathering place for fisherman and dockworkers during the fishing boom years of Gloucester’s On & Off Shore Fishing Fleet. Mike’s Pastry Shop was the go to Italian Bakery for all special occasions and holiday celebrations throughout the year for dozens of Sicilian Families residing throughout our city. Mike and his wife Katie, are best know for confecting the “World’s Best” Cassada and Strawberry Shortcakes” along with endless Italian sweet confections. All their pastries, cookies and Italian Ice were made from scratch using nothing but the very best of ingredients!

Trips to Mike’s Pastry shop with my parents and grandparents as a child inspired me as an adult to recreate my favorite pastries, cookies and desserts, once purchased at Mike’s Pastry. One of my most cherished childhood memories of shopping at Mike’s and my “Pasticciotti” recipe, I recreated from nothing but the flavors and textures I remembered as child are highlighted in my cookbook “Gifts’ Of Gold In A Sicilian Kitchen With Sista Felicia;Harvest” For recipe and memory details See pages 86-88 in “Gifts Of Gold”!
The Ciaramitaro family extends their deepest condolences to the Lentini Family.

Mr. Swan left Niles Pond yesterday morning and although he flew in his usual direction towards Henry’s Pond, he did NOT fly to Henry’s, which had become his habit. I did not see him at Henry’s, Niles, or the harbor this morning either. Perhaps he has flown to another region in search of a new Mrs. Swan. We can only hope!
