Community Stuff 11/30/15

It’s becoming a beloved Christmastime tradition: Local author and actor Doug Brendel will present two original holiday stories at a free event on Friday, December 18th, at 7 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 59 Main St. in Essex, MA. “Dirty” is the amusing, heartwarming story of the first Christmas told from the perspective of an unsophisticated shepherd. “The Day After Christmas” is a story in rhyme about an old man who works in “Refunds & Complaints.” This year’s event will also feature a third story, “Christmas, Inc.”, a whimsical look at Santa’s own struggles with the season’s commercialism. Voluntary donations will be received for Family Promise, an interfaith group dedicated to helping homeless families on the North Shore. For more information, contact Doug via Unconventional@DougBrendel.com.

SUPER GIFT IDEA FOR THE YOGI ON YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST!

Recently my friend Lyn Fonzo became the new proprietor of Harbor Yoga, located at 114 Main Street. I stopped in to say hello and just fell in love with her clean, well-organized, and beautiful light-filled studio. The full class schedule is posted on the Harbor Yoga website, which you can read here. Look for exciting new programs and events upcoming in the new year, including a 200 hour teacher training program taught in conjunction with Yoga Joy.

SUGAR MAGNOLIAS FANTASTIC BRUNCH!

While out and about shopping local during this holiday season, be sure to make Sugar Magnolias one of your destination lunch spots. Pictured is my husband’s Goatie omelette, which was devoured, and I had the Florentine Eggs Benedict, which could not have been more perfect and delicious. Sugar Mags never disappoints!

Call for the Best Cookie Bakers

RNAC cookie competition

A Call for Cookies!
3nd Annual RNAC’s “Season’s Best Cookie Competition”

Saturday, December 5, 2:00 – 4:00PM
At The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck

The 3nd Annual Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival will feature the annual “Season’s Best Cookie Competition”. Any kind of home-baked cookie may be entered, except chocolate chip – everyone makes good chocolate chip cookies – as we are looking for competitors to come up different, unique and prize-winning entries.

To enter the competition:

  • Please email to Kristie Bernard:  k_ber@hotmail.com with “cookie competition entry” in the subject line and your name, type of cookie you plan to enter, and your phone number in the email body.
  • Entries will be limited to the first twelve unique cookie entry submissions received (we want to have diversity and be considerate of the judges’ waistlines).
  • Please be prepared to bake at least three-dozen cookies, for the judges and party attendees to taste.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded, as well as a popular ballot vote (new this year! come vote!).

  • Cookie drop off will be between 11:00AM – noon on Saturday December 5th, the day of the contest. If you need alternative arrangements, please email Kristie.
  • Judging will begin at 2PM.
  • Winner will be announced around 3PM.

(ALMOST) TOO LOVELY TO USE CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA FROM LA PROVENCE

Whimsical dish towels, too pretty to use!

Liv, Matt and Asley surprised me with several of these hand screened French kitchen towels from La Provence. This shop is a treasure trove of colorful, fun, and yet very practical, holiday gifts; truly wonderful for the special someone on your holiday wish list that loves to cook and to entertain.

Especially noteworthy are their pure cotton Provence tablecloths, which come as is, or very lightly coated with a virtually undetectable acrylic finish that you can simply sponge clean. The kids spilled red wine on my new yellow poppy tablecloth last night and when I noticed this morning I thought for sure it was ruined. The caked on red wine wiped clean in a second! Anyone who has had linens badly stained by red wine knows this is remarkable.

While supplies last, La Provence is currently offering a free Mariposa gift with a 75.00 purchase of anything Mariposa. La Provence is located at 4 Main Street, Rockport.
