Volunteer Opportunities Aboard Adventure

The Gloucester Adventure, Inc. is currently recruiting volunteers for the upcoming 2016 sailing season aboard our schooner Adventure! We are a non-profit maritime historic preservation and educational organization and the stewards of the 1926 dory-fishing Schooner Adventure. Volunteers play an essential role in the mission of Gloucester Adventure, Inc., and we have an active roster of volunteers who over the years have brought many of their talents to our organization. Our programs are designed to engage youth, families, and our local community. We currently have the following areas available for volunteers: Sailing Crew, Administration, Education, Docents, and Shipboard Maintenance.

No experience is necessary to join the crew, just a determined attitude and a willingness to take on the ADVENTURE of a lifetime!

For more information, please contact us at volunteer@schooner-adventure.org or 978-281-8079.

I’ve been an AdventureĀ board member for a while now and have helped with the restoration by doing the odd bit of woodworking here and there. It has been an honor and a privilege to work on this historic vessel, but now that she’s sailing again, and I get to be a volunteer deckhand, well, it’s been a life changing experience. The people who sail and maintain her are absolutely first class, and I can say that I’ve learnedĀ more about sailing in the last three years than in the previous thirty. I have a new appreciation for the life Gloucestermen of old must have led, and just to be aboard as she clears the Dog Bar is an experience I hope more folks will avail themselves of. There is a need for volunteers of all kinds, sailors and non-sailors alike, and training is part of the culture of this ship. Do yourself a favor and come on down toĀ the pier.

In my humble opinion…

In my humble opinion…Willow Rest has THE best breakfast sandwich around! Ā It might take a few extra minutes than a rubbery drive-thru sandwich, but it’s totally worth it because it’s made with fresh ingredients, exactly how you want it. Ā This is usually a treat for me, but this morning I got a fried egg, cheddar, bacon on fresh wheat toast…perfection!

At this event, we celebrate spring, new life on the farm, and the bounty of fresh eggs produced by our hens. Go on the Egg-cellent Quest around the farm and learn about the journey from egg to chicken, collecting Easter eggs at each station to complete the Quest! Enjoy homemade refreshments in our Carriage Barn, visit with the calves, and make some fun farm crafts! Quest begins at 10am. Please plan to arrive by 11am and bring a basket of your own to collect the Quest eggs.

ItĀ was a little over a year ago when Elizabeth and I bundled up the girls and took our dog Speck up into the woods of Lanesville. We walked up past Steel Derrick and down to the end of Bearskin Neck. WeĀ stopped at Brothers’ Brew for coffee and doughnuts before heading back up into the woods and to our home in Downtown Lanesville. As often as we can we like to take a walk like this – stretch our legs, exercise the dogs, and expose our daughters to the beauty that surrounds us. (Brothers’ doughnuts are a nice bonus, too)

    Field of Blood

    field of blood

Field of Blood (22×28 mixed media)

There are two accounts of the death of Judas, one in Matthew, telling of his hanging, and one by Luke in Acts, talking about him falling headlong, bursting open in the middle and his bowels gushing out. Since Luke was a doctor, it is fitting that he would focus on the latter. I didn’t want to paint the bowel gushing, so I painted the hanging with accompanying clues to how the latter occurs. The little black bird on the hanging rope will peck away at it until it breaks under the dead weight of Judas, causing him to fall headlong into the sharp rocks below him, bursting him in the middle so his bowels will gush out. I don’t really believe that a little bird caused it, more likely the dead weight of Judas’ body causing the rope or tree limb to break. The vultures are circling and waiting patiently for the latter to occur to make their meal easier. A fitting end to a man whose sins included worshipping the idol of his greed, sacrificing his Lord to his love for money, and causing the shed of innocent blood. But in the end, it needed to happen to fulfill prophesy and for God’s plan for salvation of man to come into play.

    Matthew 27:1-10

Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. ā€œI have sinned,ā€ he said, ā€œfor I have betrayed innocent blood.ā€

ā€œWhat is that to us?ā€ they replied. ā€œThat’s your responsibility.ā€

So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ā€œIt is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.ā€ So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, ā€œAnd they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set, on whom some of the people of Israel had set a price, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.ā€

    Acts 1:16-19

“Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. “For he was counted among us, and received his portion in this ministry.” (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood).”
