Bananas fashion show

A benefit Bananas Fashion Show to get the hot air out of City Hall.

Richard Leonard, the owner of the iconic Main Street vintage clothing store, Bananas, is staging one of his rare fashion extravaganzas on Saturday April 23 and Sunday April 24. The production will benefit the Gloucester City Hall restoration fund with the proceeds being used to restore the auditorium’s ventilation system. As Maggie Rosa, Chair of the City Hall Restoration Commission says with a smile, “we are aiming to get the hot air out of City Hall!”

This show, Leonard’s third held to benefit City Hall restoration, will include his Bananarettes, a group of both women and men, some of whom travel from New York City to participate.

The creative black tie Saturday gala starts at 7:00 p.m. and will include live & silent auctions, champagne & dessert – tickets are $75 each. On Sunday the doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the show will include a pick-a-prize auction and light refreshments – tickets are $35 each for adults and $15 for people 18 years and under.

“This being Gloucester, you can dress however you want to, but it’s a lot of fun to wear something different. If you have nothing to wear, go to Bananas and you will find something” says Jan Bell, Co-chair of the event.

Tickets are on sale at Bananas (78 Main St., Gloucester,) Alexandra’s Bread (265 Main St., Gloucester,) and online at Eventbrite. For more information, please contact BananasFashionShow@gmail.com.

Homie and Rubber Duck’s Fifth Anniversary

Five years since Rubber Duck and Homie met on that blustery day April 18, 2011. The Fifth is the wood anniversary. Homie gave Rubber Duck a carving of Homie. (Homie is a little self-centered.)

Homie would have carved it himself but he has no opposable thumbs.
Homie would have carved it himself but he has no opposable thumbs.

The following is a repost of Homie and Rubber Duck’s First Anniversary describing that fateful hook-up five years ago today.

Homie: “You’re not from around here are you? May I show you the cove?”
Solitude of the lonely Homie.
Cold, lonely, rubbery, but Patriotic!
A little stand offish at first.
They’re eyes locked and Homie was in love.
“So how many children should we have?” Homie wasn’t wasting any time.
“I have a lovely nest on Milk Island.”
You’re not listening to a word I’m saying!”
“We could make it work!”
“Do you think it’s safe to come out?”
Your friends are rude Homie.
Rubber Duck out on the Town at another Fred Bodin Christmas party.

I cannot believe it has only been one year since the Rubber Duck met Homie on a blustery day just like today, April 18, 2011. When I posted that first part of the Rubber Duck saga I was only joking about it being a twenty part series. Little did I know that maybe a hundred posts later the story is still not finished. To commemorate their anniversary I repost the first few chapters. Later this week will be an update of how Homie and Rubber Duck spent their day today. Part I posted April 18th, 2011:  (This will be a twenty part series.) Part II posted April 19th, 2011: But first, the back story. Two lonely birds:  But soon the connection was made and time stopped. ”  “I am so out of here!”  But Homie came back of course and took Rubber Duck all over. The Rockport Dump, Thacher Island lighthouse, Maine, Florida, meeting Santa when he arrived in Rockport, wine tasting at Passports, Duck Confit at Duckworth’s. Then, just a few months later, things got a little weird: Last sighting of RD was at the Spring Fling two weeks ago with rumors that she was at the Thirsty Golf contest at the DogBar last week when Joey caught her again staring at him.  Flexilis anatidaephobia is the fear that a rubber duck is staring at you and Joey has got it bad.

“Paint Factory” Art Rock Found 04/17/2016

Hi Paul,
I’ve been trying to find one of your Art Rocks forever, but some other lucky person always found it first. Today was my lucky day! I read the GMG post at 8:30, raced over to the Fish Pier and drove right up to it. What a thrill!  It’s beautiful! Love the shape and feel of it. My husband loves it too, and we’ll display it proudly and happily on our living room mantle in Riverdale.

Hi Paul.  It’s fine to post tomorrow.  And many thanks again.  We love our Art Rock and will enjoy showing it to family and friends and telling them about you and the Art Rock story.  Thanks for creating great, unique art, the fun of the quest, and for making people happy!
Aileen

Many thanks for providing the fun of the treasure hunt and for the treasure!
Best Regards,
Aileen and Doug Kern

Quote of the Week – Thomas Huxley

Huxley

“Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.”

Thomas Huxley (1825-1895)

A self-taught anatomist and comparative biologist, Huxley served as ship’s surgeon on a very early voyage to New Guinea and Australia and was the first to describe several species. He was a vociferous champion of Darwin and invented the word “agnostic” (from the Greek for “I don’t know”) to describe his own thoughts about a supreme being. It was Huxley who first theorized that birds evolved from dinosaurs and who was the primary proponent of scientific education in 19th century Britain. A lifelong humanist and prolific essayist, Huxley’s grandsons include Sir Julian Huxley, first director of UNESCO, and Aldous Huxley, author of Doors of Perception and Brave New World.

From where I  was standing the same viewpoint on 11/21/16 was all sky and water, morning breaking and taking an easy minute to breathe.

Ever since I was quite young, my eyesight required assistance from optics. On my first day wearing glasses I discerned individual leaves on tall chestnut trees.  I was thunderstruck by the revelation that others could observe such a vivid world with bare eyesight. Ever after ‘yet do I marvel’.  I’m no artist, obviously. Snapshots are a reference tool or record for research and writing. On this day I was overjoyed observing the fleeting moment, snapping off to my side without looking through the phone. Later a bit of my thoughts were about iconography and series guiding unaided eyes–and no splitting hairs (poetry, photography, impressionism, music.) What series guide you? I’d be happy to share another motif Monday.
