Main St. Gloucester: goodlinens rolls into their new space and rolls out Better Towels Across America xcountry tour
goodlinens officially moves into 130 Main Street on June 1, 2016 to begin the fit-out. “We’re looking forward to finishing work by July 1 for a soft opening!” says goodlinens owner Jo Anne Chirico.
Apparently setting up a new brick-and-mortar headquarters downtown isn’t ambitious enough. While Jo Anne is focused on building out her new space, ripping down the ceiling and tearing up a glued down rug, goodlinens is rolling out across the country with the goodlinens Better Towels Across America campaign. Anna Chirico, Jo Anne’s daughter, is driving through 48 states with goodlinens towels, gathering fans and stores state-by-state, lining them up for linen.

Anna says: “Just left Savannah today and headed to Jacksonville, down the A1A highway, camping, and on to Key West tomorrow, then Miami, Tampa, Destin Beach and New Orleans. The route was planned for the most part before I left. I’ll be going to all 48 states (as well as the southern, northern, western and eastern most part, and the geographical center.) I’ll also be dipping into Canada a few times…It may change a bit, here and there. No particular highway/route.”
We can track Anna’s goodlinens progress as she scouts buyers, lifestyle stores, and boutiques. This local small business is putting up the flag for Gloucester on this road trip the minute they give their address. Let’s make sure to follow goodlinens on Instagram and root for Anna’s route (see itinerary* below). Is there a store you are a fan of in a town she’s heading to? Let her know.

More Like This, Please
Like everyone else in the world, between the boys’ sports, events, and school projects and my own meetings, errands, and random commitments, I feel like it has been forever since I have had a night to sit, book in lap, and simply relax.
We came home from school in a timely fashion yesterday, the boys rode bikes with the neighbors, we cooked on the grill, ate down back on the patio, and then….as soon as the boys were in bed…I actually found a whole hour to sit on the side deck and read. There may have been one Summer Shandy involved as well. And…even better….it could have been longer if the sun didn’t set and the bugs didn’t come out.
I will take many more evenings just like this, please.

Architect Eleanor Raymond: A Pioneer in the Field
The life and accomplishments of Eleanor Raymond (1887-1989), a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the mid-20th century, will be the subject of a talk presented by documentary film maker Lyda Kuth. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and Landscape Architecture for Women, Eleanor Raymond was a noted innovator partnering with solar energy researcher Dr. Mária Telkes to design one of the first successful solar-heated buildings in the Northeast. On Cape Ann, Raymond designed homes for artist Natalie Hays Hammond, anthropologist Carlton S. Coon and a summer cottage for herself overlooking Gloucester’s outer harbor. Lyda Kuth is an independent filmmaker and Executive Director of the LEF Foundation, which supports New England independent documentary filmmakers. She has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council with the prestigious Commonwealth Award and honored by Women in Film and Video New England with an Image Award.

SWAN FLIGHT IN THE MIST OVER NILES POND
Truly, one of the most beautiful sounds heard the world over is the sound that the wings of Mute Swans make when airborne. I call it vibrant throbbing wing beats. The highly audible sound of the wind through the wings is mesmerizing and it is the reason, or one of several reasons, why I became so interested in swans and why I decided to make a film about the swans of Cape Ann. No other species of swan’s wings make this sound, only Mute Swans.
As I am usually trying to capture the swans flying on film, I didn’t have any photographs of them in flight. Sunday afternoon I arrived at Niles just as Mr. Swan was chasing the new couple off his turf. I did not have time to get out my movie camera but did manage some snapshots. In the photo below you can see Mr. Swan is “busking;” his feathers are fluffed to their fullest to make himself look as large and threatening as possible to what he considers intruders upon his territory. This photo was taken moments after he chased the new couple to the harbor, returning to Niles to do a victory lap around the pond.

Video: Celebrate Walt Whitman’s 197th Birthday Today
Walt was born on May 31, 1819 and died on March 26, 1892. Among his greatest poems is Out of The Cradle Endlessly Rocking. The first stanza is 24 lines long and consists of a single grammatically correct sentence. I have attempted to capture the mood and import of that stanza in this short (5 minute) video.
My thanks to Rauol Pop <https://raoulpop.com> for his permission to use his footage of a very vocal mockingbird.
Beautiful Morning
