DRAGGER SHIPWRECK OFF NILES BEACH GLOUCESTER

We hope the old FV Blue Ocean is salvageable after breaking mooring in the gale force winds late last night. The Blue Ocean is a wooden converted Eastern rig side dragger. The ship was built in 1952 and is owned by Michael Ragusa of Gloucester. Beach clean-up is well underway and as reported in the Gloucester Times, the boat does not pose an environmental threat because there was no fuel or oil on board. Welcome to Canada (no political joke intended)

We arrived safely in Montreal and learned a couple of things along the way.

  1.  Hockey gear takes up much more room than flip flops and bathing suits when packing the car for a vacation
  2. The boys can get along for more than two hours, but less than three, when sitting right next to each other in the back seat.
  3. Burlington, VT has some pretty cool whales’ tails on the side of Route 89.
  4. The sunsets in Northern Vermont as spectacular.
  5. “Records of Birth” even with an official raised seal….are indeed NOT the same thing as “Birth Certificates.”  Oops.  Even so, we were allowed access into Canada (with some strong disapproval from the border patrol), but we’re not 100% certain of what will happen on the return trip home.
  6. When taking the boys to Canada for a weekend hockey tournament, you need to let go pretty quickly and accept the fact that this is their vacation and not yours.  We are simply along for the ride.
  7. A “Brasserie Sportive” is neither a Sports Bra or a strip club for athletically built women….but is, in fact, just a sports bar.
  8. Canadian hockey fans (and entire restaurant’s worth) will hoot and holler like it is the Stanley Cup…even when it is just a regular game.

We are excited to see what the rest of today brings!

Local Veterans read picture book, Heroes in Our Neighborhood, aloud to elementary school classes this week

This past week Cape Ann Veterans Services brought copies of the children’s picture book, Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood, and super volunteer readers, into our local Kindergarten, first and second grades to read aloud in the classes. Copies of the book were gifted to the classroom libraries. Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood ©2012 is by Valerie Pfundstein with illustrations by Aaron Anderson and foreword by John Vigiano Sr., a Marine Veteran and retired FDNY Captain, who honors his sons’ memories (both lost on 9/11) by volunteering his time and resources to Gold Star families and wounded heroes.

Volunteer readers at East Gloucester School: Members of the US Coast Guard Station, Gloucester, Navy/Veteran/Gloucester Police Department Officer Kevin Hicks and marine Corps Veteran Michael S. Grossi who read to his son’s class. 

Volunteer readers at West Parish: members of the the US Coast Guard Station  Gloucester; David Parisi Air Force Veteran who read to his daughter’s class; Marine Corps Veteran/State Trooper Tim Sova who read to his daughter’s clas; Coast Guard and Marine Veteran/deputy harbor master Chad Johnson; Vietnam War Marine Veteran Brian O’Connor; Army Veteran Anthony Trupiano who recently returned home; Ray Towns Army Veteran/commander of Gloucester Amvets; and Korean War Veteran Melvin Olson .
