Thanks To Deer Assasin Ian Fulford We’ll Be Smoking Up Some Venison Steaks After Marinating In Spiedie Sauce

More from Joey’s BBQ Blog-
http://www.northeastbbq.com

Joey Ciaramitaro's avatarNortheast BBQ

We’ll be smoking some South Rockport Woods deer. I hear they’re particularly delicious.
As you can see from the photo, there’s not a lot of fat in deer meat so the plan is to smoke it between 225-250 degrees until it reaches 160 degrees internally. But first we’re going to marinate it to tenderize and break down some of the connective tissue and add as much moisture to the venison as possible.
what better marinade to use than The Spiedie sauce that Friends Jimmy and Pat Dalpiaz brought from Upstate New York. Spiedie marinade is special to the Greater Binghamton NY area. So special that they have a Spiedie festival every year to celebrate all type of meats cooked with the Special Spiedie marinade.
Gonna let it marinade for over 24 hours.

Pat and Jimmy tell me the Lupos brand is the original and the standard.

Global local: Adidas consults Ocean Alliance! Can New Balance be next?

From ocean trash to fashion smash.

Ocean Alliance CEO Ian Kerr writes: “I am working on a project with Adidas who are making shoes out of recycled plastic.  I am off to the Maldives Islands where we are intercepting plastic before it reaches the oceans (principally plastic bottles) with a team from Adidas. Ill be sending back posts to the Ocean Alliance website so please check it out.”

For more than four decades, Ocean Alliance has been a global leader dedicated to whale research and ocean health. In 2008 the organization moved its headquarters to one of Gloucester’s landmarks, the Paint Factory (built ca.1880s).  Ocean Alliance http://www.whale.org/

By 2017, Adidas will produce 1 million UltraBOOST sneakers with material made from trash grabbed from the ocean. “Meanwhile, soccer jerseys that use the plastic will be worn by the Real Madrid squad when it plays Real Sporting de Gijón later this month. Eric Liedtke, responsible for global brands at Adidas, claims that the jerseys will be the first to be made completely from materials found in oceans.” Read more Fortune magazine

One hour at a time gang — imagine all those plastic bottle trash pick ups they’ve done! See Donna’s post for details about meeting at Dogtown this week.  Maybe New Balance is working on something similar and a Neptunes Harvest like model.

Dog lovers will LOVE The Dog Chapel!

Here’s a spot where all dog lovers should make a point to visit!   I was introduced to this spot during a photography workshop and just fell in love with it.   Dog Mountain is set on 150 acres on a mountain top location in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The grounds are always open to people and their dogs. This unspoiled haven is covered with hiking trails and dog ponds. Dogs are not just welcome here, they are cherished!

blm_3304-edit

When you visit the Dog Chapel you are totally enveloped with messages of love.  It is a very moving experience – sad, certainly, but also uplifting – to see how much everyone cherishes his or her dog. Grieving for a lost dog is one aspect of the Dog Chapel, but equally important is celebrating the joy of living and the bond between dogs and their owners.  The creator Stephen Huneck wanted people and dogs to have the most fun they possibly could. To this end, he has put in hiking trails, ponds for dogs to swim in, and an agility course for them to play on. In the winter folks come and snowshoe with their dogs, enjoying the pristine surroundings and the spectacular views!   Put it on your bucket list to visit if you are ever in St. Johnsbury, VT!

Virtual Reality Glasses

Anyone have any knowledge on affordable virtual reality glasses or headsets?

My boys have had a few opportunities to use them and they seem like a lot of fun.  I thought, if the price was right, they might make a decent Christmas gift.  I’ve done some very rudimentary research and the prices run the gamut.

I clearly don’t want/need to invest a fortune, but I also don’t want to bother getting a cheap set if they aren’t going to give a realistic experience with options that work for us.  I saw a set that looked like a good option, but they aren’t compatible with our iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks.  Honestly, I never even considered that would be an issue.

I’d appreciate any information some of our FOBs might have!

UPDATE FROM BEAVER POND: A WONDERFUL WORLD OF WOODPECKERS!

hairy-woodpecker-cape-ann-gloucester-massachusetts-copyright-kim-smithHairy Woodpecker

Rat-a-tat-tat, rat-a-tat-tat resonating through the trees tops. The little wild wood encircling Beaver Pond was alive with a veritable rhythm band. I must have arrived on the ideal day, for there were seemingly dozens of woodpecker excavations taking place. Not one, not two, but three different species of woodpeckers were drumming the forest canopy!

It is no mystery as to why the pond shore is a sanctuary for woodpeckers, surrounded as it is with trees in a wonder of varying stages of decay. Woodpeckers excavate dead and dying trees and limbs not only to create nest cavities and to forage for insect prey, but to also enlarge cavities used for winter shelter. During the fall, a woodpecker will spend about a week excavating winter roosting holes.

Winter roosts created by woodpeckers may later provide shelter or nest sites for many other species of animals including owls, flying squirrels, bluebirds, nuthatches, and chickadees.

red-bellied-woodpecker-cape-ann-gloucester-massachusetts-copyright-kim-smithRed-bellied Woodpecker

Woodpeckers mostly eat insects, in all stages, from egg to larvae to pupae to adult. During the winter their diet is comprised of seeds, nuts, fruits, and berries. The woodpecker’s tongue is quite extraordinary, being long and extendable, and also coated with bristly hairs. Woodpeckers use their tongues to spear and extract wood-boring insects, as a sticky trap for catching ants, and as a brush for licking up sap.

Downy Woodpecker

Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers look similar. Hairy Woodpeckers are about the size of an American Robin. Downies are smaller and their bills are more delicate in appearance. The outer edge of their tail feathers are white, barred with black, lending a spotted appearance. The outer edge of the tail feathers of Hairy Woodpeckers is pure white (see top photo above to compare).
beaver-pond-gloucester-copyright-kim-smithI’ve returned to Beaver Pond several time since the day the bonanza of woodpeckers was photographed but haven’t been treated to the rhythm band since. A few woodpeckers have been sighted, their calls noted, and only an occasional distant drumming heard. Perhaps they are tending other tasks in preparation for winter, collecting and caching food in their newly excavated holes.

There are a few moments after sunset when the light is still bright enough to photograph and to film. The Beaver Family makes their appearance just about then but none have ventured to the side of the pond where I am stationed since that one evening when a solitary beaver swam within arm’s reach. But I am patient!

vintage ABC news report

“Manchester by the Sea” is set for release November 18th– at the mall.  Not sure when it’s coming to Cape Ann Cinema or Gloucester Cinema, 34 Essex Ave, Gloucester.

“Manchester by the Sea burrows into the mind of a man who experiences a trauma that neither kills him nor makes him stronger. Rather, it leaves him maimed.”

-quote from Rebecca Mead’s New Yorker articleTHE CINEMATIC TRAUMAS OF KENNETH LONERGAN: After a bitter fight with Hollywood producers, the filmmaker returns with the shattering “Manchester by the Sea.” Lonergan has said he used local actors and Massachusetts crew for the shoot.

Queen of Katwe is playing at Cape Ann Cinema now. No Cape Ann ties but buzz worthy all the same.

There will be a new screening room open at Cape Ann Cinema with help from the Dusky Foundation and named with a tribute to Cape Ann Cinema fan, legendary actress and director, Liv Ullmann. Yes, that Liv Ullmann!
