From Wikipedia:The Chow Chow (sometimes simply Chow[1]:7–8) is a dog breed originally from northern China,[3] where it is referred to as Songshi Quan (Pinyin: sōngshī quǎn 鬆獅犬), which means “puffy-lion dog”. The breed has also been called the Tang Quan, “Dog of the Tang Empire.” It is believed [4][5] that the Chow Chow is one of the native dogs used as the model for the Foo dog, the traditional stone guardians found in front of Buddhist temples and palaces. It is one of the few ancient dog breeds still in existence in the world today.[6]

Ryan & Wood Distillery produces fine gin, vodka, and whiskey. I don’t pretend to totally understand the process, but I am enthusiastic about the product! Today, Bob Ryan spent a generous amount of time explaining a little bit about what happens post production with some of the by-product and it was very intriguing.
These are the fermentation tanks. You’ll note they’ve been named after some well known local vessels. Ryan & Wood is careful to select “ancient” or “heritage” grains for their products. Some of what is leftover after distillation is sent to the Sea View Farms for use. A smaller amount is mixed with potting soil and used for growing vegetables like potatoes, beets and peppers.

The potatoes hearken back to Bob’s Irish roots. Bob told me he began distilling partially in order to be part of the change in Gloucester as the city adjusted to the reduction in the fishing industry. We have heard a great deal recently about the changes in the fishing industry and potential ways for the area to maintain its heritage and also thrive. Ryan & Wood is one way to contribute to the Spirit of Cape Ann.
As much as we are all moving forward, using leftover ancient grains to grow and fertilize staple vegetables seems a perfect example of “the cycle of life” that was part of the lives of those early Cape Ann settlers. Every year I look forward to The Gran Prix and when asked to volunteer always enjoy doing it. This year and years past have been a Road Marshall, this helps keep the spectators safe as well as the bicyclists safe. The Gran Prix organizers have always been very polite and grateful. The bicyclists thanked me numerous times for volunteering as did the spectators. Kids of all ages really enjoy watching this event. A couple of the bicyclists also thanked me for sharing our beautiful Stage Fort Park. Thank you to the organizers, participants and spectators who all came out over the weekend. Look forward to next years event.

NEWPORT, R.I. — Rhode Island’s educational tall ship, the Oliver Hazard Perry, lost power Sunday evening and drifted into multiple boats before grounding near Perrotti Park, according to a news release from the Coast Guard’s First District headquarters in Boston.
Station Castle Hill in Newport was providing a safety zone Sunday evening.
The tall ship, whose home port is in Newport, was leaving Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival with a crew of 12 when it lost power, the news release said. The 911 call came in at 6:15 p.m.
Two boats from Castle Hill and personnel from the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force responded.
No injuries or fuel leaks were reported. The incident is under investigation.
The Oliver Hazard Perry, a 200-foot-long three-masted ship that took eight years to build, was finished in 2015. It’s a modern ship with a steel hull, but it was designed to look like a naval vessel of the early 1800s. It is the largest civilian sailing school vessel in the nation.
Perrotti Park is where passengers from cruise ships are ferried to spend time visiting in Newport.

This past Saturday the Boston Bruins learn-to-skate program, the Bruins Academy, teamed up with Cape Ann Youth Hockey at the Dorothy Talbot Rink in Gloucester for some on the ice instruction and fun.
Some very lucky skaters received, in many cases, their first on-ice lesson, completely decked out in Bruins gear, alongside former Bruin and NHL defenseman, Andrew Alberts.
It was so much fun to watch him skate with the kids. He was beyond phenomenal and played group games like the best of them….while also offering up many special one-on-one moments to wobbly first timers.
My favorite moment of the day? Watching Andrew Alberts give his undivided attention to a tiny one who had fallen and had absolutely no idea of how to get up. I hope the video footage finds its way to this little one’s parents as his potential skating career unfolds so they can look back and laugh at how it all began….on the ice at Talbot Rink…with a Boston Bruin cheering him along. A huge “thank you” to the Boston Bruins, the Bruins Academy, and the Cape Ann Youth Hockey volunteers who worked together to make this a huge success.

Inside, at the rink, the little ‘uns had time on the ice. These guys are around 6-7 years old, so we’ll be seeing them in on the high school teams in about 10 years. More future of ice hockey for the Gloucestermen! Quite an inspiration for me, who cannot skate on blades or wheels!
It’s very nice to see the available fields and facilities put to such good use. Kudos to all those accompanying parents that make the dream come true for their children.

Generous donors rally for breast cancer awareness.
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Miles for Meatballs today raised a whopping $4,700.00 for breast cancer!!! The event was hosted by Mayor Sefatia, Tonno’s Chef Anthony Caturano, and Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group. The Miles for Meatballs event began with a scenic tour around Cape Ann in luxury cars from the very generous Warren Waugh. The drive was followed by a fabulous late afternoon dinner at Tonno. Chef Anthony prepared his famous homemade meatballs and sausage with zugu/gravy, served over the creamiest polenta you can imagine. The homestyle, yet elegant dinner was accompanied by an outstanding Caesar salad and delicious cannolis. Every Sunday Chef Anthony serves a traditional meatball and zugu/gravy Sunday family dinner and I know where we will be having dinner next Sunday!

Person online advises to review your own attitude toward the crows, suggesting that if they irritate you then you get more mad, the more mad you get, the more irritated you become. I was sitting home for a half hour and never noticed the crows until Kate mentioned them, but during that time span that’s all she could think about.
