My View of Life on the Dock

On November 8, 2017 the North of Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau held their annual gala and awards dinner in the beautiful ball room at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA. Last year it was held at Beauport Hotel.
Naturally, Gloucester and Cape Ann have connections with the North of Boston CVB, and several board members include area business owners. Last night, Gloucester was in the house! Speakers were compelled to mention Gloucester even if they weren’t among multiple Gloucester contingent tables. Paul Tucker, MA House of Representatives, quipped that there was no surprise Mayor Romeo Theken received two standing ovations, and went on to compliment her as his favorite Mayor, and Kim Driscoll of Salem, too! Senator Joan Lovely confessed that her Grandmother was from Gloucester. And “New Member Award” recipient, Willow Spring Vineyards, said perhaps they’d open up in Gloucester.
Congratulations to all the 2017 Tourism Award winners: Mayor Romeo Theken City of Gloucester, Jeanne Hennessey Beauport Hospitality Group; Robin Donovan, The Trustees of Reservation, Castle Hill at the Crane Estate; Hope Hitchcock, Witch Pix of Salem; Kathryn Rutkowski, Essex National Heritage Commission; Willow Spring Vineyards; and Paul Tucker, MA House of Representatives.

You know the holidays are just around the corner when the Christmas Tree arrives on Kent Circle! Save the date: Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 3pm-5pm for the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting.

The Sal Grasso Memorial Friendship Tournament is a big deal with Cape Ann Youth Hockey Nation….and this is the 25th annual. Since 1987 Cape Ann Youth Hockey teams have been playing in this tournament against Westmount teams from Quebec, Canada. The tournament alternates home ice. Last November the maroon and white caravanned to Montreal and enjoyed three days of hockey in Canada. This year, the Westmount teams are obviously coming to us.
While sportsmanship, friendship, and teamwork are at the heart of it all, I’d be remiss to not mention that Cape Ann is hoping to secure their name on the trophy for the third consecutive year. The Westmount teams, unbelievably, took the trophy for the tournament’s first 14 years in a row! Since then, Cape Ann has won seven and Westmount has won four. Dare I say we seem to be on a slight winning streak and it would be nice to keep the trophy here on Cape Ann.
The Cape Ann/Westmount Friendship Tournament was started back in 1987 by Sal Grasso of Gloucester and Mike Deegan and Peter Wallace of Westmount when Sal paid for a bus out of his own pocket and took a crew of Gloucester kids 6 hours north to play some hockey. The trek was a huge success as most players billeted with host families and formed bonds that continue to this day. When Sal passed in 2006 the Tournament was aptly re-named the Sal Grasso Memorial Tournament.
So, if you have some downtime this weekend and like some good hockey…head to Talbot rink and cheer on Cape Ann…and Westmount. Games will be happening nonstop from 4:30 on Friday afternoon until Sunday at 2:00.

Gloucester really has some awesome looking doors to welcome visitors and family! Some are modern and slick, others remind you of your grandparents’ house. Speaks well of the city and the residents.
From Rasheed Ogunlaru: ” Just because a door appears closed it does not mean the door is locked-nor that it will not open with the right heart, call or touch.”

Tuesday, November 14, 7pm at the Manchester Community Center. Guests are cordially invited, $5 fee.
One week from today the Seaside Garden Club presents this delightfully illustrated program exploring the importance of creating welcoming habitats for birds through thoughtful landscape choices, including native plants vital for food and nesting sites. Presenters Joan Butler and Jana Milbocker are experienced gardeners with backgrounds in floral and graphic design. Go to their Enchanted Gardens website (http://www.enchantedgardensdesign.com) for details.
Seaside Gardeners are asked to bring donations for Beverly Bootstraps to this meeting. Toiletries are especially needed, such as tooth paste & brushes, shampoo, body wash, men’s and women’s razors, and feminine products.
Members are also encouraged to bring in material for the window boxes at Beverly Bootstraps. The Community Service committee requests greens from White Pine, Hemlock, Balsam Fir, Cedar, and Cyprus. Branches should be 2 to 3 feet long and put…

Watching the sunset from the Easternpoint Lighthouse I then headed to catch the moonrise over Niles Pond. Despite the full moon, it was so dark that I could barely see the ground that I was standing on and did not even know Mr. Swan was swimming about until looking through the photos just now!

From the Clean City Commission, Ainsley Smith:
The proposed plastic bag ordinance is going back to City Council (the currently sworn-in councilors) on Tuesday, November 14th at 7:00pm in City Hall. There is a public hearing where members of the public can speak for up to 3 minutes, to share their opinion on the ordinance.
Written comments are also being accepted by the City Clerk, who will distribute them to all councilors. These must be received by Joanne, jsenos@gloucester-ma.gov, before 5:00pm on Thursday, November 9th.
– The text of the plastic bag ordinance was unanimously passed by Ordinance and Administration subcommittee members Councilors Nolan, O’Hara and LeBlanc last month. Our polystyrene ordinance has already passed a full council vote and will be effective January 1, 2019.
– The ordinance would not take effect until January 1, 2019, so we have over a year to distribute reusable bags to our neighbors and allow businesses to use up their current stock, and try out new, more sustainable options.
– The ordinance allows for thin produce and meat bags to remain, to avoid any concerns of contamination, and also allows for newspaper and dry cleaning bags.
– The Clean City Commission has already secured $1750 in grants and donations to purchase reusable bags, in addition to 350 lightweight bags we already have in hand, ready to distribute to our neighbors who may need assistance purchasing reusable bags.
– Just this week, Wakefield became the 56th municipality in the state to reduce their reliance on plastic bags. As a city that relies on a healthy ocean for so much, we believe that Gloucester should be next!
Questions about the ordinance can be sent to the Commission – GloucesterMACleanCommission@gmail.com
