This is a follow up about the public meeting held by Gloucester City Councilor Scott Memhard February 15, 2018 at Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library on beach traffic and parking with a focus on his ward. This post includes Councilor Memhard’s meeting notes, and the Beach & Traffic Ad Hoc committee presentation to City Council. Look for information and maps related to Long Beach, Good Harbor Beach, Stage Fort Park, and more. Chances are your ideas or concerns were mentioned–doublecheck for yourself. Here’s Councilor Memhard’s recap of the Summer Beach and Traffic public meeting held at Sawyer Free Library February 16, 2018 (advertised in the Beacon, Gloucester Daily Times, and elsewhere long in advance):
“The Ward 1 Beach Parking Ordinance community meeting last night at the library was well attended. We had a lively airing of concerns and opinions, addressing the specific Parking Ordinance proposed changes, and general, wide-ranging discussion of the problem and various potential solutions, including:
> expanded off-site parking* and trolly/bus service to the beaches;
> better signage notifying drivers that lots are full and closed, with posted directions to alternate parking options; and
> other practical steps to relieve severe safely, access, and disruption from on-street parking congestion in our beach neighborhoods.“
*park n ride options would ease traffic especially with smartphone reservations/options. Locales like Rockport, Manchester, Provincetown limit cars. Several lots mentioned maximizing extant options such as negotiating with Stop&Shop, Shaws, Fuller, Blackburn, schools, etc. Stage Fort Shuttle already established and more train/bike. Train-trolley services have a rich history here.

Fog lifting on the inner harbor
The perks of having an office overlooking the harbor is the ever changing views! When I came in to work in the morning I couldn’t even see the harbor but by noon the fog was lifting and gave us these ethereal views of the FV My Grace coming by Eastern Point Lighthouse and unique panos of our inner harbor.

The Red Seat
The warm weather has given me baseball fever.. spending summer nights at Fenway never gets old. The red seat is supposedly the longest home run hit inside the ballpark,Ted Williams holds this.

Rare Bluefin Tuna Caught off of the Keys
SportfishingMagazine.com reported this week that a rare (actually “unheard of”) bluefin tuna was caught off the Florida Keys this week. A 600 pound one at that. Captain Alex Adler and Mate Rich Hill landed (and released) the giant on Monday on the Kalex.
We visited with Alex and his crew last April down at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina. My husband used to fish with Alex and the boys were thrilled to meet him and climb around his boat. While there they fed the tarpon, pet the manatees that were drinking out of the boat scuppers, and watched a shark circle the boat.
Bud N’ Mary’s is definitely our kind of place and we can’t wait to go back. Congratulations to Alex and his crew on the rare catch!
A group of anglers on a day charter to catch king mackerel off Islamorada with Capt. Alex Adler on the Kalex out of Bud ‘n Marys Fishing Marina ended up battling a bluefin tuna estimated to weigh 600 pounds, releasing it at the boat after a 2 ½-hour battle. The fish was hooked in about 50 feet of water on the reef.
This capture, on Feb. 10, of a bluefin tuna on a Florida Keys reef is unheard of in recent times, says Andy Newman, media relations director for Florida Keys Tourism Council, who was at the dock when the Kalex returned.
“Adler has been seeing packs of bluefin running over the reef line for a couple of weeks,” Newman tells SF. “He had the good sense to have a rigged mackerel in the boat’s freezer. After seeing a couple packs of big bluefin today, maybe 100 fish, Adler told mate Rich Hill to get the mackerel out.”

Apply for a GHS summer internship for July and August. Get a jump on your friends and nail down a summer job. THERE ARE ONLY 20 OPEN SLOTS, SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO REVIEWING YOUR APPLICATION ASAP!
As part of this internship you will:
- Be matched with a local company where you will gain important workplace skills
- Be paid minimum wage or a stipend
- Start to build a solid resume for college and future endeavors
Internship highlights:
- Open to students in 9th through 12th grades
- Applications are available starting NOW!
- Interviews will be conducted starting in March and we will let you know by April if you are accepted into the program
- Employee orientation will be held in June
- A 2.5 hour workplace skills workshop each Wednesday at GHS during the weeks of July 9th- August 17th, and an internship placement at least 10 hours per week (exact weeks/hours will depend on the employer but will mostly be over those 6 weeks)
