My View of Life on the Dock
Mix sour cream, parmesan cheese, basil paste, feta and sun dried tomatos for the stuffing.
Roll 1/4 inch thick EVOO coated chicken breast (pound flat between two pieces of wax paper) around the stuffing, secure with toothpicks then coat with Italian bread crumbs.
I used a deflector plate. Under which I put a half a Weber chimney of lit coals on the opposite side of the grill where the chicken would go. Vents all wide open.
Cook for 25 minutes until chicken is golden brown.

“When you go into the Woods,” features oil paintings by Vanessa Michalak highlighting some of Cape Ann’s well known gems. Works depict imagery of a variety of places including Annisquam Village, Lanesville’s Vernon Quarries and Babson’s Dogtown boulders. The exhibition will be on display throughout October at Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester, MA with and opening reception scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6th from 6pm-8pm.
The Exhibition, “When You Go Into The Woods” is a reflection of Michalak’s exploration of Cape Ann and her ongoing investigation of the painting process. The works reflect a fascination with a specific place and its hidden treasures. Many of the works are plein air paintings that brought her to the edges of quarries and sent her trekking through Dogtown’s rocky paths. As much as these works pay tribute to a specific place, they also reflect Michalak’s gestural painting style that at times borders on abstraction. Much like her wanderings in the woods, there is a sense that she doesn’t mind getting a little lost in brushwork, layering and mark before finding her destination.Â
Vanessa Michalak grew up in Maine before moving to Boston where she lived and worked for over a decade. While living in Boston she visited Cape Ann often and eventually moved to Gloucester last year. She received an MFA in painting from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2013. Residencies include: Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass Village, CO; Emerging Artist-in-Residence, Penn State, PA;Â and Playa, Summer Lake, OR. Michalak’s work was featured in New American Paintings #110 and Fresh Paint Magazine (cover artist 2014). She was selected as a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Painting in 2014.

Bring the family down to Harbor Loop on September 29th from 10AM to 2PM for a Community Safety Day.
There will be many exhibits from the Gloucester Police and Fire Departments as well as others. A $5 fee will be collected from adults and children are free.
100% of proceeds will benefit the Cops for Kids with Cancer Foundation.
The day’s activities will include:
What a great way to spend the day with family and friends while supporting our Police and Fire Departments as they work to raise money for an incredibly important charity.
It is going to be such a great day and they are looking forward to a wonderful crowd.
Antiquing is one of our favorite pastimes. It tickles me to re-use items from my grandmother’s era. Essex is full of shops, but for one less now. We will miss the White Elephant. It sure looks different now that it’s been sold and closed up.
It leaves a bit of a hole, but there are certainly other shops on our favorites list. These include a couple in Essex such as Farmhouse Gatherings (not open often, but worth the stop) and the Flying Dragon. Keep your eye on the changing message in the window.
But our sentimental favorites are right on Main Street Gloucester: Main Street Art and Antiques is entertaining. I especially like to look at the old photos and photo albums. Dogtown Books might not technically be an antique store, but it remains at the top of my browsing list. I camp out in the local history corner of the store. I guess I just love spending time in the past! Thank you to all who mind and run these shops. I’m sure it’s an act of love.

Her head snaps back a good six inches after the impact of the tricycle rear wheel.
The Great Egret doing the happy dance was fishing with a group of mixed herons and egrets when he began to leap about and flourish his wings. I couldn’t tell why from the distance I was shooting until returning to my office to look at the photos and saw he had a minnow in his mouth. What a show-off!
According to plaque on the boulevard it is called Stacy Esplanade.
Stacy Boulevard is so beautiful, thanks to Generous Gardeners for keeping it looking great.
The Rockport Art Association & Museum’s Experimental Group opens its ninth group exhibition, “Unexpected No. Nine” at Rockport Art Association & Museum, 12 Main Street, Rockport, MA, 978.546.6604. This juried show features artworks of both the RAA&M’s artists and contributing members. Works on view in the exhibition range in medium to include paintings, mixed-media, graphics, sculpture, digital art and photography. The exhibition runs from September 29 through October 13, with an Artist Reception on Sunday, September 30 from 2-4 pm. The Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) is one of the oldest and most active art organizations in the country. The Association has a long and distinguished history that has spanned 96 years.
An exhibition of diverse watercolor and water media paintings by Gloucester artist Marilyn Swift will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, September 29th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, September 29 – Thursday, October 11.
Marilyn Swift has been an Artist Member of the Rockport Art Association & Museum since 1978 (40 Years!). She has been awarded numerous prizes for her watercolors, not only at the RAA&M but also at juried shows throughout the Northeast. Upon earning her BA at The College of New Rochelle in NY, she taught art in the Norwood Public Schools.
“My paintings are direct responses to visual stimuli. While others use words or music or gestures, I paint. Watercolor is, for me, the vehicle that generally works best. When a subject dictates, I will paint in oil or acrylic; but I always return to watercolor. I am a dedicated plein air painter, inspired not only by Cape Ann, but also by travels both near and abroad. Over the years, I have studied with noted artists whose works I admire, yet I continually strive to express my own voice. My work can be described as emotional realism incorporating careful drawing, planning along with thoughtful editing, and good design.” – Marilyn Swift

There is a small privately-owned plot for parking near the cemetery, but once this is full, cars will have to be parked on Washington Street (no meters).
There is no bathroom facilities nor electricity.
There is a very nice coffee shop, The Cove Café, a 2-min walk from the cemetery, though no public bathrooms.
  Please bring work/gardening gloves, bug spray, and wear long pants and if you can, any of the following yard tools:
a rake, a gas or battery-operated weed whacker, loppers
weeding buckets, large black heavy-duty plastic bags for leaves and weeds
old tarps for collecting and moving debris to a central location
lawn mower
wheel barrow

I spent some time up at the Crane Estate the other day. Photos waiting to be snapped around every corner up there. It is a beautiful property no matter what the season. Geometric shapes and patterns have always captured my eye when taking photos so I was immediately drawn to this.

The LCC Program supports community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year.
