I spent some time up at the Crane Estate the other day. Photos waiting to be snapped around every corner up there. It is a beautiful property no matter what the season. Geometric shapes and patterns have always captured my eye when taking photos so I was immediately drawn to this.

Just around the corner! Reminder: this year the Massachusetts Cultural Council Gloucester LCC Application deadline is October 15th, 2018.
Here’s a list of 2017 awarded projects. The Gloucester Cultural Council is one of hundreds of Local Cultural Councils across the Commonwealth. The LCC Program supports community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. The Gloucester Cultural Council guidelines and online applications are available at http://www.mass-culture.org/Gloucester.

Lost to the Sea from Nova Scotia
Yarmouth Nova Scotia has a striking monument to lost fishermen located in a lovely park. It is very serene and thought-provoking.
There are many familiar Gloucester surnames included on this memorial, but one in particular piqued my interest. George A. Pierce drowned off Eastern Point in August 1923, coincidentally during the city’s 300th anniversary celebration. Although he did not live in Gloucester at the time of his death, he did have family in town. I was going to save this little tidbit for a future post regarding the history of the city’s anniversaries, but when I saw this on the beautiful memorial, I just had to share it.

Seaside Garden Club’s October Meeting
Seaside Garden Club welcomes Suzanne Mahler as its guest speaker at their October 9 meeting, “Dividing and Transplanting Perennials.” Nearly all perennials benefit from periodic division. Learn the indicators for division, which plants require regular separation, and the best times to split and transplant. Tools of the trade and methods of division will be covered during a live demonstration of multiple plant species with different types of root systems. Divisions will be donated to the club for raffle at the end of the presentation.
Suzanne Mahler has been sharing her passion for gardening for more than 30 years, having spoken at the Boston, Rhode Island, and New England Spring Flower Shows, Art in Bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts, the Environmental Protection Agency, and garden clubs and organizations throughout the New England area.

PBS and BBC Announce AUTUMNWATCH – NEW ENGLAND
Some press for the show that I have been working on with the BBC! The shows air October 17-19th, at 8pm. I don’t know yet which night the Cape Ann Monarch episode will play, but will let you know.

PBS announced, as part of its co-production partnership with the BBC, that a new three-part live event, AUTUMNWATCH – NEW ENGLAND, will air Wednesday-Friday, October 17-19, 2018, at 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings).
Travel journalist Samantha Brown, BBC presenter Chris Packham and wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole will host the multi-platform television experience from alongside Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Similar in format to PBS’ previous summer spectacles BIG BLUE LIVE and WILD ALASKA LIVE, the new series will include a mix of live feeds and pre-taped footage from across New England.
Unique to AUTUMNWATCH – NEW ENGLAND, the live event will focus on cultural traditions and historical sites in addition to local wildlife and the colorful gold and red landscapes in the region that’s best known for them.
To accomplish this, local experts in food, wildlife, music, literature, and history will join the trio of hosts each night to showcase characteristics special to New England.
“In AUTUMNWATCH – NEW ENGLAND, audiences will experience exquisite outdoor adventures while surrounded by nature’s most picturesque imagery,” said Bill Gardner, Vice President, Programming & Development, PBS. “We look forward to partnering with the BBC once again to present this ambitious live production and share this American experience with PBS and BBC viewers.”
AUTUMNWATCH – NEW ENGLAND cameras will be there to capture time-lapse changes of fall foliage; a quest for majestic moose in Maine; the Monarch butterfly migration through Cape Ann, key wildlife species like squirrels, chipmunks and turkey gangs as they invade backyards in preparation for the winter months; and the critters like owls, bats and bears that make the most of nighttime.
Audiences can expect to see segments that highlight Native American history and traditions, Halloween traditions, regional fairs and the many farms that provide the region with its rich varieties of apples, pumpkins, cranberries and maple syrups.
“I’m thrilled that AUTUMNWATCH is moving to New England for this very special week of live programming,” Tom McDonald, BBC Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual, said. “The teams are heading to one of the most iconic locations in the USA to experience the great American ‘fall’ for what promises to be an unforgettable chapter in the Watches’ history.”

We’re both bored, and I think that shows in her face.

Timber! Iconic Edward Hopper vista in Gloucester, Massachusetts, easier to see thanks to tree removal at 316 Main Street
HOPPER FANS TAKE NOTE
Haskell’s House, 316 Main Street, is one of more than 110 homes and vistas in Gloucester, Massachusetts, that inspired artist, Edward Hopper (1882-1967).
Gloucester merchant, public official (city councilor / state representative), and Master Mariner, Melvin Haskell (1848-1933), commissioned the house in 1884.
Hopper and artist, Jo Nivison (1883-1968), were married in 1924. They nicknamed the fancy house high atop the hill the Wedding Cake House. The famous drawing was originally purchased by American master painter, George Bellows (1882-1925), from a sensational Hopper solo exhibition held in the Frank K. M. Rehn Gallery in 1924. The watercolor changed hands and was eventually gifted to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert A. Goldstone in 1996. Hopper depicted the house in two other works, both side views from Prospect street rather than this view from Main Street.
The house was listed for sale at $830,000 throughout the spring and summer of 2018. Landscaping today involved major brush and tree removal. The result will be a scene closer to the one experienced by artists Edward Hopper and Jo Nivison in the 1920s. The scenic locale is a power spot: down the block from the Crow’s Nest and across the street from Gloucester’s Inner Harbor, Beauport Hospitality’s Cruiseport and Seaport Grill venues, Cape Ann Whale Watch, and Gorton’s.

Third Annual Sustainability Fair on September 29
The third annual Sustainability Fair organized by TownGreen2025, a program of the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the O’Maley Innovation Middle School on Cherry Street in Gloucester.
With something for every member of the family, the TownGreen2025 Sustainability Fair offers up-to-date information on saving energy and money through more energy efficient homes and businesses. Visitors will learn about new solar techniques and installation and clean energy delivery models. See the latest electric and hybrid cars, go for a test drive, and learn about discounts and subsidies.
Programming for the day includes:
– 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon Keynote speaker Nathaniel Stinnett, CEO of The Environmental Voting Project in Boston offers ways to make better and more informed choices and how to make a difference for the environment by voting, particularly in this critical year of mid-term elections.
– 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. Program Panel on Carbon Pricing – the transformation to a new and needed clean energy economy. Carbon pricing uses a fee on emitters of carbon dioxide (utilities, oil companies, gasoline and heating oil companies) to make it more expensive to pollute. All or most of the income from the tax is returned to individuals, families, and companies, to offset the added costs to the public. Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante and Senator Bruce Tarr both supported the carbon pricing bill that passed the legislature this year but was pulled from the Omnibus Energy bill in the final conference committee as a result of pressure from the utilities.
– Reforest the Tropics – an innovative plan to offset the entire carbon footprint of Cape Ann schools through reforestation.
– Teachers and students from Rockport and Gloucester share their work on climate change.
– Enjoy healthy food and snacks.

Dick Prouty, lead organizer of the TownGreen2025 Sustainability Fair and a member of the Board of Directors of the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, describes the program’s mission to create a carbon footprint for Gloucester and Cape Ann that is zero or as low as possible. “The climate change that is already affecting our lives and communities is mostly caused by the burning of fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere and results in global warming and all its related effects,” stated Prouty.” “The amount of carbon dioxide that each community adds to the air is known as its carbon footprint,” he continued. “We believe that Cape Ann can become a model for how one region can achieve much cleaner energy and a more sustainable existence in a decade.” Prouty anticipates that the benefits of this work will be reduced and stabilized energy costs, increased local clean energy related jobs, and an attractive climate for business and innovation.

Driving Sunday with The Mrs and she tells me my inspection sticker expired last month. Damn it. I totally forgot.
Need a minor fix but just am totally stretched for time.
STRESS.
Not when you deal with Sean and the crew at Extreme Truck and Auto repair. All my worries escaped my mind and body within a minute of talking to Sean and having his assurances he could get me taken care of.
Not only that I feel so confident every time I go in. It’s not often you go to a auto repair place and they tell you you don’t need the $800 repair that the dealership you bought the car from is telling you you need. But Sean runs the most honest and capable shop I’ve ever dealt with.
If you have an issue, I implore you. Just bring your vehicle to Sean. It’s going to save you a lot of aggravation and worry. I promise.
Thank you Sean. You took something that had been on my mind hanging on me for a week and made it go away in minutes.
