My View of Life on the Dock
Sunsets are my favorite especially this time of the year.

from Jane Deering Gallery-

Jane Deering Gallery is pleased to present The Art of Geoffrey Bayliss, November 10-December 10 with an Open Reception Saturday November 17th from 1:00-4:00pm at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester. The artist’s latest work — two suites of unique linocut prints — will be on view in the exhibition titled Harvest. Blue Harvest, a series of 13 prints in beautiful color, and the companion series, Red Harvest, achieve a range of complexity emblematic of the reductive technique. Accompanying the new prints is a flock of highly inventive papier-mâché birds, fresh from the studio and ready for new destinations. These delightful objects are the result of explorations in papier-mâché by Bayliss and artist/printmaker Coco Berkman with whom Bayliss continues to study. The artist has generously offered to donate his proceeds from the sale of these works-in-progress to The Open Door/Cape Ann Food Pantry.
Bayliss, a native of Gloucester, holds a BA in architecture from Columbia University. He has studied with artist Celia Eldridge, sculptor John Bozarth, printmaker Coco Berkman, and artist Charlotte Roberts. His work is held in numerous private collections in the US. This is the artist’s 3rd solo show with Jane Deering Gallery. The gallery will be open Saturday & Sunday 1-4pm, November 10 – December 10, and by chance or appointment at 917-902-4359, info@janedeeringgallery.com, 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, MA. 01930.

I’ve been at the dock for 42 years. a long time. I’ve seen probably 6 blue lobsters in my time here but none as blue as the one brought in today and released.

Sometimes when I do my “Nichole’s Picks” post on Thursdays…just prior to the beginning of a new weekend, events are already booked up.
So, with that in mind, I am throwing this event out now. It doesn’t take place until December 9th, but no doubt it will fill up.
Reserve your tickets now. Sounds like a super fun day for young children!

Things were hopping at Newell Stadium on Sunday when we stopped by to watch Fishermen Youth Football D team face Lynnfield. I think the future of Gloucester football is looking bright.
The new stands were full and the concession stand was open and ready:

The cheerleaders were enthusiastic and led by coach Stacy. The players provided some great football action for the fans.
Thank you to the coaches and volunteers for making this happen for the players and cheerleaders.

The community is welcome to the hauling out of the Sylvina W. Beal, Wednesday, Nov 6 from 9:30am to 11:30am at Maritime Gloucester. This 107 year old schooner will be hauled out on the 169 year old Maritime Gloucester Railway.
While releasing the last Monarchs of the season with Charlotte, one landed on her hair and stayed for few moments, just long enough to catch a minute of footage and to take a photo.
Thank you to Patti Papows for our little straggler. Patti’s chrysalis was attached to a plant in her garden, an aster, which had lost all its leaves. She was worried a predator might eat it, so we scooped up the chrysalis and placed it in a terrarium at my home, where the butterfly emerged on October 17.
Will these last of the season’s Monarchs that are migrating along the Atlantic Coast make it to Mexico? Some will follow a path along the coastline, where when they reach the Delaware Bay, winds will begin to funnel them towards Mexico, between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. Some will continue on down the coast all the way to Florida. Some of these Atlantic Coast Monarchs will live their days out in Florida, and some will cross the Gulf of Mexico on their journey to Mexico.

“A Place for All”
I was so happy to have been at the Ribbon Cutting for the new Pete’s Park in Beverly this past Friday. The playground that Pete Frates grew up playing on has been rejuvenated and redesigned to be accessible to all and is really amazing. In addition to the Frates family, friends, sponsors, neighbors and more….also in attendance were Mayor Cahill, Governor Baker, Ray Bourke, and the brand new 2018 World Series Trophy.
Quite a line up to celebrate quite a collaboration….and an amazing guy.
This collaboration, in fact, began three years ago and the list of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and those who gave of time and talent is impressive. From the sports courts in Pete’s Boston College’s Maroon and Gold to the blue fish painted to indicate the accessible paths throughout the park….from the unbelievable basketball hoops to the custom built boat, the Lucy Fitz, this park has it all. It is truly gorgeous and speaks to how much love exists for Pete and the Frates family while also emphasizing their goal of creating a family friendly space for everyone!
Congratulations to all who worked so hard and gave so much. You hit it out of the park….as one of the speakers said, “for Pete’s sake.”
Across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts and the recently shuttered Papa Ginos in Walgreens Plaza, the content of Orange Leaf Soft Serve francise in Gloucester, Ma., will be sold at absolute auction today at 11:00 by Swampscott based Michael C Purcell A-1 Auctions. Preview inspection opens at 9am. In 2013, local news reported that the owners invested a whopping $300,000 into the build out of the structure erected in 2008 by Walgreen Plaza developer, Mac Bell. Classic Cooks and Orange Leaf shared the space for a few months this summer.
