Gloucesterβs Legendary Dogtown Books Under New Ownership Nov 2018
Founder and original Dogtown Bookshop owner Bob Ritchie embraces retirement as the torch is passed to Gloucester residents Lucas Cotterman and Caroline Harvey, who take ownership of the store on November 19, 2018.Β Gloucesterβs legendary destination for used & unusual books has been a favorite for locals and visitors since 1995, and you can count on the new Dogtown Books owners to honor this rich history. It will remain a locally owned and independent used bookstore with a uniquely Gloucester flavor. Building upon this legacy, expect more and new inventory, new book topic sections, literary gifts & goods, open mics, workshops, kid friendly activities, author events, and some new and cozy reading nooksβ¦just in time for winter! Grand Re-Opening Celebration and Sale is scheduled for December 1st from 10am to 6pm.
For more information, visitΒ www.dogtownbooks.comΒ and follow us on instagram @dogtownbooks.
Meet the New Owners:
Lucas and Caroline are avid readers, oddity and vintage collectors, and used bookstore junkies. In fact, they first met in a bookstore in Big Sur, CA! The privilege of owning something as special as Dogtown Books is a cherished, lifelong dream for them both. They will ensure Dogtown Books remains Gloucesterβs best destination for used books, and will prioritize inclusion, accessibility, creativity, and a feeling that when you come in the door, youβre always welcome.
Lucas is a writer and visual artist, and before owning Dogtown Books he toured as a lighting designer for over 15 years with bands such as The Strokes, Interpol, Arcade Fire, and Death Cab for Cutie, just to name a few. Caroline has been a professor at Berklee College of Music for almost a decade, and she continues to tour and lecture worldwide with her original writing and curriculum. Her grandparents owned a home near Niles Beach, sadly taken long ago in a storm, and she is proud to be among four generations of her family to call Gloucester home. Ladybird Johnson is their 6 year old Shar Pei, and while she might not be able to read (yet), she plans on sleeping and quietly snoring in the store.
Dogtown Books is still located at 132 Main Street in Gloucester, MA.Β VisitΒ www.dogtownbooksΒ or follow instagram @dogtownbooks for updated store hours and upcoming special events. Our business phone number is 978.281.5599. The Grand Re-Opening Celebration and Sale is scheduled for December 1st from 10am to 6pm.

Friday afternoon, after the norβeaster, the sun came out just barely before the skies again darkened with a brief snow squall. I was driving along Atlantic Road during those fleeting in between moments when way off in the distance I spied a flock of birds, with the distinct shape of swans in flight. Swans fly with their long necks extended, unlike herons and egrets, which fly with their necks tucked in. What is Mr. Swan doing out in this wildly windy weather I thought. But it wasnβt Mr. Swan, it was an entire family of Swans! There were two adults and four cygnets. Stunning to see and very uplifting. They flew over the Twin Lights and then further and further until I could not see them any longer.Β
The first and third swans are the adults, the second, fourth, fifth and sixth are the cygnets, or first-hatch year juveniles. The young swans will retain their grayish brown feathers until their second summer.
Please write and let me know if you saw the Mute Swan family on Friday afternoon. They were flying along the backshore at about 2:15. Or, if you live on the Northshore and know of any swan family with two adults and four youngsters, I would love to learn more about them. My email address is kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. Thank you so much for any leads!

These envelopes do not stuff themselves. Gloucester Stage recently requested assistance in preparing for an upcoming mailing so I went over to help out. Fellow volunteers Cindy and Deborah checked, folded and stuffed right along with Stage employees Billy and Melody.Β There was a specific order for the envelope items, but if yours is backwards,Β consider it a little hello from me.
Melody and Billy didn’t mind their photos taken, but Cindy and Deborah declined.Β They were diligent and hardworking on behalf of the Stage Company, so thanks for spending your afternoon in this manner!

Saturday morning at 8:30 am, an injured Eastern Coyote was spotted In East Gloucester. The coyote was not bearing weight on its right back leg. He trotted gimpily up Plum Street, before heading down a driveway halfway up the street.
Note in all the photos the Coyote is holding up his right side back paw.
Sick and injured coyotes can be unpredictable although, this one appeared nonchalant. I at first thought it was a large dog and was headed towards him to possibly help him find his way home. Despite its inability to put weight on its paw, his coat looks healthy and and he was almost jaunty, leg injury and all.
