Rock Piles on the Back Shore

I’ve been seeing rock piles such as these in more and more locations in recent months. I can’t quite decide how much I like them. They are a testament to someone else’s patience and engineering skills and they are made of natural rocks but they aren’t “natural” either.

I will admit I like looking at them while reluctantly understanding why some might urge us not to build them: moving rocks can disrupt nature; they can be mis-read by hikers and walkers who know the signage; or, as one website put it, they are “an unnecessary reminder of humanity”.

So, I guess I will leave it to others to decide. I’m not starting a debate: I don’t build them, but I kind of like looking at them. PS Some apparently call them “cairns”, but random rock piles are not cairns, which are meant as memorials or landmarks and are usually much larger.

More Off Market Luxury Homes

More Off Market Luxury Homes

Did you know that there are dozens of owners that would like to sell their Cape Ann and North Shore luxury homes but can’t because the homes aren’t currently on the market? The homes didn’t sell last season and have “expired” or are “canceled”. They are considered “off market” by zillow.com, realtor.com and the multiple listing service so you may not know anything about them.

These off market opportunities are available, they’re just not easy to find.

Quote of the Week

January 4, 2019

Some people pay a compliment as if they were expecting a receipt.

Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard (1868-1930)

KH

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News.  For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time. Another favorite Kin Hubbard quote: “Now and then an innocent man is sent to the legislature.”

January Checklist

IMG_1120.jpg

Often in January we make promises to ourselves. New year, new me and all that jazz. Whether you believe in resolutions, or find them hokey and ridiculous, there is never a bad time to check in with yourself and your home. As we go about our lives we accumulate things. It might be mail on the desk, tupperware filling up the fridge, or maybe it’s mental clutter. Whatever needs cleaning out in your life, go for it. It doesn’t matter if you believe in resolutions or not, every day is a new day to start fresh, but it’s up to you to put the work in.

CATHERINE RYAN’S BEAUTIFULLY CURATED EXHIBIT AT THE CAPE ANN MUSEUM – ONCE UPON A CONTEST

Our Catherine Ryan has curated and designed a wonderfully fun and beautiful exhibit, “Once Upon a Contest: Selections from Cape Ann Reads,” currently on view at the Cape Ann Museum.  The exhibit highlights local writers and artists of children’s picture books from the Cape Ann Reads initiative. Cape Ann Reads, hosted by the area’s four public libraries (Sawyer Free, Rockport, Manchester, and Essex), was created to encourage literacy in young people through community and creative collaborations.

The exhibit is thoughtfully designed for little folks. The paintings are hung at just the right height for pint-sized readers and soon-to-be readers. Mock-ups of the books are placed on shelves within easy reach and petite chairs for little ones make for a cozy storytime feeling.

I took Charlotte to the Museum on Friday and she had a fantastic experience. We’re planning to return again this Friday!

Come join us at the opening celebration from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, this Saturday, January 5th, at the Cape Ann Museum, 2nd floor.

“Once Upon A Contest” runs from December 20th through February 24th.

Thank you to Charlotte and her Mom and Dad for the photos! The watercolor illustration Charlotte is sitting in front of is from my book, “Beauty on the Wing: Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly,” which was the original inspiration for the documentary film of the same name. The illustration shows a pair of Monarchs ascending into a maple tree, as they are mating.

The Cape Ann Museum is free to Cape Ann residents during the entire month of January!

Author/illustrators included in the exhibition:
Leslie Galacar, Martha Shaw Geraghty, Marion Hall, Steven Kennedy, Charles King, George King, Michael LaPenna, James McKenna, Barbara McLaughlin, Alexia Parker, Victoria Petway, Jim Plunkett, Diane Polley, Mary Rhinelander, James Seavey, Gail Seavey, Kim Smith, Christina Ean Spangler, Bonnie L. Sylvester, Juni VanDyke, Maura Wadlinger, Betty Allenbrook Wiberg, Kirsten Allenbrook Wiberg, Jean Woodbury and Claire Wyzenbeek

Exhibit Curated and Directed by Catherine Ryan, with support from the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation.

Deborah Kelsey, director of Gloucester’s Sawyer Free Library

Cindy Grove, director of the Rockport Public Library

Sara Collins, director of Manchester’s Public Library

Deborah French, director of Essex’s TOHP Burnham Public Library
