Books of Interest to Summer Visitors and Old Residents

The Gloucester 400 committee recently shared a Facebook post about the books they have on their shelves and it hit a nerve for me. Not only do I have books on mt shelves here and in NY, but also a folder on my computer desktop in preparation for 400! Here’s a sample ad which  includes prices from the Gloucester Daily Times June 1904:

And  here’s a small sample from my own collection (a poor contrast to list above!):

GROVE! A FABULOUS NEW NORTH SHORE RESTAURANT SERVING BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, AND BRUNCH – Check out their menus here!

The fabulous and fantastic brand new restaurant, Grove, opened this past week. The restaurant is part of the Briar Barn Inn, spa, and art gallery complex, which is located at 101 Main Street in Rowley. I was invited to attend a soft opening by my friend Sarah Boucher, Briar Barn Inn’s Director of Sales and Marketing, and had the joy of sharing breakfast with her charming husband Jeff and their adorable daughter Cordelia.

The country-style restaurant is simply beyond gorgeous, with soaring post and beam ceilings and natural light spilling in all around. The beautiful light fixtures create a warm, ambient glow and the furnishings are an inviting mix of modern comfort with Swedish farmhouse style and country French.

The space is not only open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch, but is ideally perfect for small to mid-sized weddings, as well as a host of events including company meetings and parties. And the staff is wonderfully kid friendly, too 🙂

If you have ever attended a wedding or special event at Willowdale Estate, then you know of their renowned catering team and how exquisitely delicious is the fare. Chef Ben Lightbody, Willowdale’s Executive Chef, is also the Executive Chef at Grove, and he has created an outstanding menu.

I really don’t need to say more, but just in case you have never sampled Willowdale’s offerings, Grove’s French toast, with cinnamon crème anglaise, is the best French toast I have ever had, and I make really good French toast. The outer layer was a thin perfectly butter browned crust, while the bread was moist and tender inside. The cinnamon crème anglaise was pure perfection and the candied pecans made for a wonderfully crunchy counterpoint. I cannot wait to bring my family and try lunch and dinner!

Over the years, the Annual Art Auction, a major fundraiser for the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M), has become a highly anticipated event. As a prestigious art auction, it attracts serious collectors throughout the country, as well as those just starting a collection.

Held in the RAA&M’s Hibbard Gallery, the auction features works by master Cape Ann artists of the past including Aldro T. Hibbard, Anthony Thieme, Emile Gruppé, W. Lester Stevens, Harry A. Vincent, Antonio Cirino, Paul Strisik, Emma Fordyce MacRae, Philip Little, Hayley Lever, Marguerite Pearson, Carl Peters, Al Czerepak, Bernard Corey, and Charles Movalli, among many others. The auction specializes in Cape Ann art, but is not limited to this region and also includes works by numerous other prominent historic American artists.
The auction, now in its 34th year, began with a bequest by founding RAA&M member Antonio Cirino (1888-1983). Cirino left his artwork to the Association with the stipulation that the art be auctioned to help support the organization. The auction quickly evolved to include other historic Cape Ann artists, and has been the Association’s major annual fundraising event ever since.

Bidding is available live at the auction on May 4th, online via www.LiveAuctioneers.com (with advanced registration), or by submitting an absentee bid with the RAA&M in advance.

If you would like more information about the auction or need additional promotional images please contact: Margaret Redington, Program Manager & Auction Coordinator, 978.546.6604 or via email auction@rockportartassn.org.

First Friday with Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket!

Friday, April 26th, 2019, 7:00pm

Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket has taken the New England music scene by storm since their debut in 2009. The full size ensemble has redefined the sound of classic funk, by slathering it with hip-hop, blending it with flavors of jazz, blues, rock, soul.

Hailing from Boston, Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket is led by the triple-threat of velvet-voiced front-woman Kobi, emcee Micah Casey (a.k.a. “Big Daddy Disco”), and guitar slinger/vocalist Ryan Green (a.k.a “Funk McNasty”). The ferocious and relentless groove of the bands all-original funk music is driven by the the thunderous rhythm section of drummer Dave Share, bassist Joe Cesarz, and percussionist Jim Schunemann. The groups hard-hitting pocket sound is rounded out by Keyboard extraordinaire Scotty King, and a horn section anchored by saxophonist Matt Oliphant, trombone player Rich Houghton, and trumpeter Bryan McCulloch.

New Great Marsh brewery construction moving right along and Bicentennial Celebrations 2019 #EssexMA

Great Marsh Brewing Company expansion is well underway on the former Fortune Palace site at 99 Main Street in Essex, Ma. The brew pub makes a statement on the skyline and will have incredible views. Slated to open in the fall of 2019, the new brewery and restaurant received a five million bond boost from MassDevelopment and partnership with Webber Restaurant Group. North shore owner John Collins resides in Newburyport. If progress remains on track, the opening will sync right in with Town of Essex Bicentennial Celebrations in 2019 (see brochure below).

Archaeological Site, Nora, Sardinia

This site is quite large and very interesting. Nora sits on a peninsula not far from Cagliari, Sardinia. It was settled by the Phoenicians (Lebanese) in the late 9th century or early 8th century BC. The town came under Roman control in 238BC   and became an important trading center .

Much of the town is now under water.

Last chance to catch Once Upon a Contest in Manchester-by-the-Sea and temporary public art by Leslie Galacar

Tomorrow is the last day to catch the travel exhibition Once Upon a contest in Manchester. Explore fantastic new children’s books by local authors and artists at the lovely Manchester Historical Museum. Friday will also be the last chance to catch Leslie Galacar’s temporary work consisting of a series of intricate illustrations that progress from the entry to the main gallery. Can you find this one on site?

The exhibition changes with each installation as each locale and architecture is unique and special-  as are the programs and public art component. The reading and art exhibit is coming to Essex next, opening on May 4th at TOHP Burnham Library.
