It’s friggin cold as holy-hell. And when the wind blows, fagetaboutit. So, when you enjoy ya lobsta this New Year’s Eve, don’t forget the hard work and freezing temps it take so get it to ya table! In 1915, the annual New Year’s Eve ball at City hall in Gloucester was hopping. Ball dancing! Magical spectacle and theatre design! Interpretive Dance! Quartet! Vocalists!

Commonwealth Club Dance: Gloucester organization presents its “Midsummer’s Night Party” in City Hall

The annual New Year’s eve concert and assembly of the Commonwealth Club of this city, the “Mid-Summer’s Night Party,” was celebrated in City Hall tonight.

These occasions are noted for their unique decorative schemes and that of this evening made a spectacular ball room setting. Pres Lantz designed and superintended the scenic effect.

The entertainment comprised a program by an orchestra, the Campus Quartet of Dartmouth College, __gure and allegorical dances by Miss Melba Procter, cornet solos by Arian Latham and a violin obbligato by A.A. Lucier. Mrs. Charles C. Nelson of this city gave the vocal solo, “Less than Dust” to Miss Procter’s interpretive Persian dance. Richard W. Freeman was the chairman of the entertainment committee.

Failing audio or photographs from the actual event, here are some examples of the program. The music for Less than Dust was composed by Amy Woodforde-Finden (1860-1919) sometime during 1894-1902. Lyrics by Laurence Hope were added later, copyrighted 1906.

Since I couldn’t find a Less than Dust soprano example, ‘here to help us hear’ a female’s voice as was on the program in Gloucester’s City Hall that New Year’s Eve– apparently a wonderful local singer, Mrs. Charles Nelson- : enjoy audio of a another song from this same Woodforde-Finden cycle, Kashmiri, sung by Maggie Teyte (1888-1976) and recorded in that era.

2 big scoops of black bean salsa (any brand)

Garlic powder to taste

Sriracha to taste.

Mix it up.

Top with shredded Mexican cheese.

You want more? Double the recipe.

Even a dummy like me can make it in under a minute and it doesn’t require you to have a crazy amount of ingredients that you probably don’t already have.

It’s Like Home at Charlie’s Place

We were looking for lunch and decided to go to Charlie’s Place on Bass Avenue. We had not been there in a while but always look there for comfort foods in an enjoyable, friendly atmosphere. We were not disappointed. It’s pleasant and cozy even under virus restrictions. GMG Jim had the cranberry walnut chicken salad wrap along with his favorite chowder. I had the Gloucester Fish sandwich. The right amount of food served with a smile! Thanks Charlie’s!

Quarry Dance lX on TV

QUARRY DANCE lX is featured on Cape Ann’s community cable television station, 1623 Studios, every night at 7:00PM from now through January 2nd, 2021 on channel 67. Anyone on Cape Ann who subscribes to X Finity Comcast can watch it.

The 33 minute film is followed by a question and answer session moderated by Maureen Aylward and includes the Quarry Dance lX team of dancers, the musician, videographer, choreographer and producer. Tune in to see it on your TV screen.
