About Windhover

For more than 50 years. Windhover has served the community as a place to learn, perform, and share the beauty of dance and the related arts in a natural setting.

In 1967, Herbert and Ina Hahn purchased the last farm in Pigeon Cove, a small village by the sea some two miles north of the town of Rockport, Massachusetts. The farm, on 4.5 acres of land, included a main house, cow barn, stables, slaughter house, various outbuildings and pasture land.

In less than a year Herb Hahn single-handedly converted the barn into a dance studio, the stable into a library, sheds and out-buildings into dormitories and he renovated the main house to function as a dining-kitchen complex. The performing arts camp for teenage girls opened in the summer of 1968 and during its seventeen years was filled to capacity with students from the USA, Canada and Mexico. During that period new buildings were added including a chapel/theater, a second dance studio, an outdoor stage for dance and theater performances, and a dining hall and kitchen in the main barn.

Windhover turned into a 501©3 non-profit organization in the 1980’s and now offers dance classes, a teen dance intensive, residencies and performances in all of the performing arts to the Cape Ann Community and beyond.

Beachfront at Cape Ann Motor Inn

You absolutely cannot beat the beachfront location of the Cape Ann Motor Inn at the end of Long Beach. Each room directly faces the ocean and the long expanse of beach….as well as Thacher Island and its twin lights. Hotel guests are treated to their private section of beach and the convenience of being able to run back into your room (several with efficiency kitchens) makes for a perfect day! We just treated ourselves to a two-night stay-cation along with several other friends and their families. It was a wonderful way to kick off summer together! Check out Cape Ann Motor Inn here.

Osprey Chicks Have Hatched at LobstaLand Nest

These screenshots from the osprey-cam hosted by Essex Greenbelt show 2 hungry osprey chicks being fed by one parent as the other looks on from a short distance. It is reported that 2 of the 3 eggs hatched and it’s not likely the third one is viable. If you are feeling a little less than motivated during this heat wave, take some time to watch this entertaining webcam out in the marsh behind LobstaLand.

What’s going on out there? — pat morss

It started today at 3:30 AM when we were woken up by a loud crunching sound, followed shortly by someone yelling “Call the Coast Guard,” which we did.

At 7:00 AM American Cruise Line’s American Constitution came into Gloucester for at least the fourth time this season, went back out around 10 AM, and appeared to have some problem while doing 360’s, before returning to the harbor. She just headed out again toward Provincetown at 5:00 PM.

Trawler on the rocks outside our house
She eventually was able to back off, before the Coast Guard had to render assistance
American Constitution arrived early morning
She had some kind of trouble when going back out, later in the morning
She made two full revolutions after I first saw her
It appeared the crew was trying to pull something up in a net

USCG Station Gloucester was standing by, and then returned to the harbor
