Tell Us Your Water Plans

Tell us in the comment selection at the bottom of this post what steps you have taken (if any) to deal with the current City of Gloucester Water Crisis.

Thankfully I have a jug of bottled water to make my coffee.

Pete Mondello reported that Dunkin Donuts around town were closed this morning.

Memo from Cape Pond Ice

Please be assured: Cape Pond Ice is safe and acceptable – packaged ice inventories were put up before August 15 (since that date production was curtailed, by request of the Mayor’s office, to meet the City’s water crisis) , and surplus ice product is being trucked in from sources outside Gloucester to meet needs of consumers, restaurants and ice accounts through this weekend, to assure adequate safe ice supplies. Again: Cape Pond Ice is safe to use! – Scott Memhard, President & GM, Cape Pond Ice Company

This Just in – Water Emergency!

Just got the Code Red call that all water for human consumption must be boiled for at least 1 minute. All drinking water, dishwashing water is included. We’ll keep you posted for further information.

For those of you not getting the CodeRED calls – they just went out with the boil order.

Drinking, cooking, ice, brushing teeth – boil water for 1 minute.

To get on the CodeRED list if you are not getting calls, go to the City’s Web Site.

Read the Times article here.

It’s a pain in its own little way!

Everywhere I see this mistake. I’m no grammar expert, but I know my it’s and its! I notice it in newspapers, magazines,articles-all over!

“It’s” is the contraction of “it is”, and “its” is ownership. For example- “It’s going to rain” means it is going to rain.

“The weather and its effects will determine if we have the party or not.”  This “its” is like “his” or “her” except with objects.

Just a little annoyance.     —Sharon

Now I’ll really have to watch my dangling participle! Heehee

red dories full

That was toooo easy. Hedge got it first and had photos to prove it. Then everyone else said basically the same thing…The red dories in Jones Creek off Stone Pier.

Congratulations to all and Hedge, you can pick up your t-shirt at Capt. Joe’s later today. Thanks for playing!

More Frustration!

Well, this post was supposed to be a shortened version of my slide show “Express Yourself, Gloucester” that we showed at the Block Party, BUT of course the conversion program that I use decided to change their format and it crashed my computer 3 times. So Joey said to try Youtube instead. It didn’t like my password, so I had to create another account. Uploaded the video. They can’t publish it because I used the song  “We are Family” and it’s copyrighted.

I’m going for a bike ride. See you at noon!

Frustrated Part I

I need to vent.  I’ve head a couple of very frustrating events take place over the past couple days, one of which has for the first time led to a let down in motivation on the blog.

Frustrated Part I:

I got an email last week from Troy Brown’s handlers saying that they love GMG and they would like for us to run a contest through the blog to help promote Troy’s Gloucester appearances this past weekend.

Immediately I went into blog mode asking if I could get some promotional swag to give to the readers and also asked if I could do an exclusive interview with Troy for the first ever official audio podcast of GMG.  Everyone agreed on the terms and I started doing Troy Brown research so I wouldn’t sound like an idiot during the interview.  I developed about 10 questions with follow up questions in the event he answered the questions one way or another.  When I got the call that the interview was going to happen I called Mike Lindberg and he put together an incredible intro for the podcast which we’ll debut later.  I waited for a call to know when Troy would be calling in, had all the audio equipment set and was ready to rock.

All day I was nervous as hell because if he called while we were unloading boats there was no way I could leave the floor of the dock to do the interview so it was much to my delight that we had finished up all our work and I got the call at just about the perfect time.

I had pretty high expectations for the interview as I was well prepared and was excited about the fun and different questions I had lined up as opposed to the normal questions he must have to answer all day every day like -” Do you miss football”

He called and the interview went fantastic.  He was laughing, I was laughing and we had a great time.  12.5 minutes of podcast gold……or so I thought.

I hung up and got Mike Lindberg right away on Skype as Mike was going to produce the podcast and get it out before the eight o’clock  deadline to be included in the email blast to the subscribers.

We had an exclusive on Thursday, days before Troy was going to be in Gloucester and it was the perfect guest for the first podcast.

So I looked in the folder where the audio file was supposed to be located containing the interview and it wasn’t there.  I spent 15 more minutes searching every folder on my hard drive to no avail.

It didn’t record.  There was no way I could have done the interview again and capture that spontaneity and fun.  Not to mention the embarrassment of my mistake.

It took me apart and I’ve been in a funk since.  I missed it and I’m sorry guys.

Adam Sandler Said To Have Offered To Buy Eastern Point Property

Click To View Full Article In  The Boston Globe from Mark Shanahan-

We’re told Sandler, in particular, is sorry to be returning to LA. The “Billy Madison” actor, who grew up in Manchester, N.H., enjoyed his rental house next to the Eastern Point Yacht Club in Gloucester so much that he’s offered to buy it from the owner. As one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors – he earned an estimated $65 million last year – Sandler can certainly afford the oceanfront manse. Though he’s a big movie star, Sandler didn’t act like a diva, according to locals. He often played basketball at the Gloucester YMCA, and was a regular at Long Beach Dairy Maid, the Chinese restaurant Dragon Light, and at Frank’s Sub Zone, where owner Frank Carini hung a framed poster for Sandler’s latest flick “Funny People.” “Nice guy,” says Carini, who served the actor steak tips. “We don’t get a celebrity like him in here very often.”

Dory Race Eliminations Results-

Junior dory crew winners to represent the USA vs Canada- LJ Robertson and Randy Parisi.

Ed Parnell and John Morris won the over 40 race

Tom Jarvis and Jimmy T beat Joe Sanfilippo and Mark Duvall

results from Damon

The winners go to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to race on Sept 12, at noon.

Juniors:
Randy Parisi/LJ Robertson 6:07
Kyle Edmonds/Joey Ciolino 6:13
This was quite a race. Both crews were fast and smooth and well matched. The difference may have been the second boat drifted to leeward of their course up near the turning mark, perhaps due to a big boat wake or it would have been really, really close.

Over 40:
John Morris/Ed Parnell 5:48
Mike Harmon/John Scola 5:54
Sam Scola/Steve Goodick 6:02

All very experienced crews and the most experienced of all pulled it off. Congratulations!

Mixed Doubles (one entry)
Jen and Jeff Muise 6:23
Good time for just rowing around the course. Good luck in Canada!

All of the above on 1/2 mile course

Open (one mile Course):
Jim Tarantino/Tom Jarvis 10:31
Jerry Ciaramitaro/Alan Morrissey 10:39
Joe Sanfillippo/Mark Duval 10:42
Mike Mitchell/Rob Morrissey 11:13
This was a close race for the first three positions. The Duval/Sanfillippo dory drifted off course to leeward going out or it would have been closer. As it was the two boats in lane 1 and 2 steered closer to their line and came in 2 and 1.

There was no women’s race.

Where Zat Winner! It’s under the train bridge!

Jason got the correct answer this week.  The photo was taken under the train bridge. There were a lot of excellent guesses.

Thanks so much for playing. Congrats Jason! You can pick up your t shirt at Capt. Joe’s  later today or whenever you get a chance.Glosta on shirt 2 copy

Oarmaster’s Cup Report From Jimmy T

This just in from Jimmy Tarantino-

Oarmaster’s Cup

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It grieves me tremendously to report to you that the Oarmaster’s Cup has
been savagely ripped from my possession. Though nine  warriors braved
the high wind and waves, all posting good times, one time far exceeded
all others. With an UNBELIEVABLE time of 17:56, Joe Sanfillippo is the
new Oarmaster. Joe was in the 1st heat with Dave Perkins, 19:18, and
Bill Edmunds 20:04.
Second heat: Jim Tarantino 18:38, Dave Buchanan 19:53, Hillary Frye 24:47.
Third heat: Erik Dombrowski 18:41, Alex Thomas 20:58, Damon Cummings 23:05.

Eliminations to determine who will represent the US in Canada, on the
Weekend of September 12th, will be held this coming Saturday.
Registration is at the usual time (see website) this coming Friday
night. I believe there are no women’s crews training so any Supermodels
who would like to win a free trip to Canada need just register Friday
night!!!

Maggie Liljegren and Amy Foster At The Gloucester Tri

Comments from Amy-

I love the pictures on your site. Glad whoever got the shot of me running at the finish took it when they did—that woman behind me was just about to blow by me!

Anyway, I was really, really impressed by the race today. I think the first time people/cities put on new events they go through some growing pains, but this event was very well run. The logistics were well thought out and it seemed very organized–to the participants at least. But what really made this race was the volunteers. There were tons of them and they not only gave direction and moved things along, but they were all cheering and it really helped people like me who were dying on certain parts of the course! I’m also impressed that they started and ended the race downtown. Now I need to get my act together so I don’t die in the swim next year. Maybe we should get you to do it too????
