Hello!My name is Danielle Pomeroy, and I am a senior at Gloucester High School. I am the president of our city’s DECA chapter, and was wondering if there was any way in which you could publish an article publicizing our upcoming fundraiser. It is a babysitting night on Valentine’s Day at the Magnolia Library for all ages 2-12. The cost is $5 an hour, $20 for the entire night (5-9). For each additional child from the same family, the cost will be a $10 flat rate. We will include arts & crafts, activities, snacks, and a movie. It will be run by a large group of local students participating in Gloucester DECA, and all proceeds will go towards reducing the cost for our state competing in March (approximate $320 per student, and 15 are eligible to attend). Well the Superbowl is here and with it goes the last game of the best professional sport product on our shores til next year’s NFL season begins.

Although I don’t feel as strongly about favoring the Ravens or the 49ers I am tilting toward rooting for the 49ers for a couple of reasons

A) I like their young quarterback Colin Kapernick’s style.  He seems like a nice kid with some swagger and ability and it will be interesting to see if the  49ers win the Superbowl how many young Hollywood starlets he tears through in the year to come.  Forget laying a bet on who wins between the Niners and the Ravens.  The far easier bet has to be if the Niners win how long it takes for Kapernick to drill Taylor Swift. That has to be a prop bet in Vegas, right?  Just has to be.

B) Not wanting to have to listen to the insufferable Ray Lewis

That’s really all it boils down to for me.

Punxsutawney Phil crawled out early Saturday morning and did not see his shadow, signaling it will be an early spring.

“Spring, bring it on,” said TODAY’s Erica Hill.

“The groundhog has proved me wrong once again,” said TODAY’s Dylan Dreyer, who guessed the Phil would see his shadow. “He messes me up.”

Coming into this year, Phil had seen his shadow 100 times and had not seen it only 16 times since 1886, according to Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle. There are no records for the missing 10 years. The 15 members of the inner circle, clad in tophats and tuxedos, decide in advance whether to announce Phil has seen his shadow or not, even though the groundhog does the symbolic duty.

In Punxsutawney, which is about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, the groundhog annual makes his prediction on a hill known as Gobbler’s Knob. The event annually attracts more than 15,000 people and brought as many as 30,000 in the wake of the 1993 release of the Bill Murray classic movie “Groundhog Day,” according to the Inner Circle. There also are updates on Twitter and Facebook.

The celebration dates to the early Christians in Europe, particularly the Germans, who were some of the earliest settlers of Pennsylvania and believed the groundhog’s intelligence was such that if the sun came out on Feb. 2 it would be smart enough to go back underground for another six weeks of winter. The first written observance of the tradition came in 1886 after it had earlier been conducted privately in wooded areas outside town.

This class/self-help group will discuss short spiritual readings by different authors, addressing the struggles of our human condition. Simple practices will be taught to support and guide the search for empowerment, meaning, contentment and joy. (This is not a therapy group.)

DANCE PARTY IS POSTPONED!
Feb 2 Dance Party at The Center on Rocky Neck has been postponed due to construction going on at the site.
