SailBot Results

Hi everyone,

The SailBot 2013 Race is now over!

This year was marked by the kind of weather you can only find in New England; everything from warm sunny days to squalls with 30 knot gusts. The teams all rose to the challenge and put on a great contest. Our special thanks to Olin College, the City of Gloucester, Maritime Gloucester and Ocean Alliance for their help and support.

This year we had 16 teams show up and 16 boats get into the water. Of those 16, 10 were novice teams. Friends were made, ideas were swapped and everyone went home happy and ready for more. Congratulations to all of our competitors!

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week we look at flounder. The F/V Padre Pio  and F/V Marie G.S.‘s catch is filleted at Steve Connolly Seafood.

Sole is similar flounder. From ehow: “Both fish are flat, with both eyes on one side of their face so they can hide on the ocean floor and watch for prey. While both are oval in shape, flounder is more rounded. They are two separate species with slightly different looks and tastes.”

And from Asian Recipes Blog: “There are many species of sole and flounder, all flat fish with tiny scales and a white belly. The newly hatched fish have one eye symmetrically on each side of the head. When they grow to 2 cm long, one eye begins to move towards the top of the head, then crosses to the other side to lie adjacent to the other eye. As this happens, the pigment on the opposite side becomes lighter and turns almost white.

Both sole and flounder have a gill cover with another bone in front of it. In a sole these are joined together; in a flounder they are separate and you can insert your fingernail between them.

Both varieties of fish have white, soft flesh with a very fine flake, on a fine-boned skeleton. In most recipes, whether they are used whole or as fillets, sole and flounder are interchangable.”

Fishing Report From Captain Skip Montello

Hi Joey,

Here is the North Coast Angler weekly fishing report :

http://www.northcoastangler.com/

Fishing Report: 6-14-2013

The striper action overall continues very good from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River. Stripers ranging in size from “dinks” of 8 inches to keeper sized fish pushing 40+ inches.

The Candy House at Little River continues to provide local anglers with fair action using small topwaters, metals and soft plastics. Most of the stripers are of the dink variety, but a few up to 25 inches are being taken. If you plan to fish there this weekend, bring along the bug spray as the “no-seeums” are also biting and especially fierce when the wind is light. The oceanside action is also picking up with catches being reported from the boat and shore anglers alike. Brian O’C reported taking (and releasing) a 40+ inch striper at mid-week in an undisclosed shore location along the Gloucester shoreline. He also reported consistent action still happening in the Essex River backwaters. The local water temps are still running cold so I expect the stripers to continue providing some fairly good fishing this weekend in the backwaters and out front.

Nashville rising stars Louise Mosrie and The Twangtown Paramours @ Old Sloop next Saturday

poster-130622-crop-for-gmg

Louise Mosrie’s songwriting is riveting; her performance is captivating.  Every song tells a story that touches your heart.  Here’s a great quote about her that sums it up:  “…basically, she’s William Faulkner with a guitar.” – Rich Warren, WFMT-FM Chicago

Last year Louise took time out from her tour to tape Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.  Here’s my favorite song from that show — gave me the chills from the control room.

More Louise Mosrie videos here.

Liz Gerstein Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,

I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely LOVE your blog!  I truly hope the people of Gloucester know what a gem they have in you.  You are a real ambassador for the city.  I was only in Gloucester for one afternoon last year and mostly because of your blog and the contributors, wish I could move there!!  If all works out, I will be lucky enough to spend a week there at the end of the summer. I do have one question, not sure it has anything to do with you, do you know why so many of the webcams aren’t on line.  Yes I get my morning dose first of Good Morning Gloucester and then check out what cameras are up and running before I leave for work.

Anyway, thanks for all the enjoyment.  (You did have me rolling in laughter over the midget pickles!)

Liz

Hi Liz thanks so much for the kind comments.  It’s what let’s our contributors know that heir work is appreciated and truth be told if the comments dried up our contributors would be less motivated to produce the best content they could produce.

In regards to the webcams, some of the owners of the webcams simply haven’t kept up with keeping them on and I just don’t have the time to contact each one and walk them through the steps to get them going.  A great FOB Tim Blakely generously did the installs for next to nothing in labor but we lost Tim this past winter to cancer and if the people who own the cameras would see the benefit to having them up and running and embedded on their own websites I think it would prove to be very beneficial to them.  I look at the stats for the Gloucester Webcam site and it gets great traffic every single day.

So thanks again for your kind comments Smile

Made my day!

Chime in if you came today because of GMG. What did you order and how did you like it?

UPDATE:  Within minutes of me taking this pic the place is on fire and the street is blocked off.

See FOB Brooke  and Walter Pekham and his wife they were just behind me.  I took my order and left and between the time I walked out and before Brooke got her food they were breaking down the upstairs door to try to get any tenants out!

ROCKY NECK GALLERY’S SUMMER ARTISTS SERIES INTRODUCES NELLA LUSH
image
RIP TIDE
NELLA LUSH
Oil, wax on canvas   36 x 36

Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the second show of the Summer Artist Series introducing the artist Nella Lush and her exquisitely beautiful seascapes and frescoes.  The show, titled Nella’s Journey, opens Wednesday, June 12 until July 2.  An artist reception will be held on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM.  The public is invited to attend this free event and hear Nella talk about her work and process.

An experimental artist, Nella enjoys working on a variety of subject matter from abstracts to frescos, nature and the sea.  The Cape Ann coastline is her muse where she spends time recording the atmospheric moods of the sea, light and sky.  Back in her studio she interprets these emotions on canvas where the process of painting is, for her, a spiritual journey.  She works mainly with oils using cold wax as a medium often adding marble dust to create more texture and depth.  It is her application and scraping away of numerous layers, again and again, that shape the final painting.

“I connect with things that leave a mystery… that the viewer is digging into the painting and each time they find something different.  I don’t seek perfection: I just seek to be heard and to have the viewer connect emotionally to my work and to bring them to a time and place in their life.”

Nella is represented by the Art Essex Gallery, Essex, CT; the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery, Mystic, CT; Lorica Gallery, Andover, MA; and Peter Alpers Art, Andover, MA.  She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists; a member of National Associations of Women Artists in NYC; Rockport Art Association, Rockport, MA; a member and board trustee of North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, MA; President of the Andovers Artists Guild; and associate member of the Oil Painters of America.

Please join us and meet Nella Lush on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM for a reception and artist talk.  Delicious refreshments will be served.

RNG is located on 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester.  The hours are: Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 6 PM, Thursday – Saturday: 11 AM – 8 PM.  Free parking is available.  For more information please visit our website http://www.rockyneckgallery.com or call 978-282-0917

Greetings dear Joe,

My name is Tesa and we met a few years ago when I was director of Sustainable Cape Ann (we started the Farmers’ Market).

I moved to Indonesia three years ago, and now live in California but still love to support cool projects back in Cape Ann.  I did two interviews with Robert Newton in 2008 and 2011, which I just cleaned up and posted on my blog with a link to his current Indiegogo Campaign.   If you have time to read them, and feel comfortable mentioning them on your blog, I was hoping it might create some support for Robert’s fundraiser.

Warm regards,

Tess Silvestre

The offshore fishing out of Gloucester ,Ma. couldn’t be better.I was out the other day and limited out on cod and caught some real nice sized haddock.I’m glad we are allowed to catch fish for my charter clients and also some nice locale fresh fish to take home for dinner.
