GLOUCESTER, Mass. —
“A new exhibition at the Cape Ann Museum is giving visitors a rare look at the friendship that helped shape three of America’s most influential modern artists.
“Avery, Gottlieb, and Rothko: By the Sea” explores the personal and artistic relationship between Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko during their summers on Cape Ann.
Museum officials say the exhibition tells a story that has rarely been explored publicly, focusing on how the artists inspired, challenged and influenced one another as their careers evolved.
The exhibit features paintings, drawings and works that have never before been publicly displayed, offering visitors new insight into the creative process behind three iconic names in American art.
Curators say Cape Ann’s coastal landscapes became both a gathering place and a source of inspiration, helping shape artistic ideas that would later influence modern American painting. The exhibition highlights not only the artists’ individual accomplishments but also the lasting impact of mentorship, collaboration and friendship.”

Mighty Mite…

Local metal sculpturist Xavier Murdoch, of Wenham, spent more than 600 hours crafting a life-sized lion featured at this weekend’s Gloucester Waterfront Festival. The sculpture, named Judah, is made of steel and stainless steel.
He wanted to make a splash with his first major sculpture, and said the concept of a lion felt like a natural, unique subject.
Murdoch launched his business, Murdoch Artisans, in 2025.
He also had a sailboat sculpture featured this spring by a North Shore Arts Association exhibit for new Cape Ann artists.
Murdoch worked with local sculptor Chris Williams for four years and also New Jersey metal sculptor José Chora.

Quarry Dance
Last weekend the Quarry Dance happened. Three times. It was hot and muggy. And yet… it was amazing. As many as 300 people were shuttled from Windhover to an exquisite privately owned quarry. There, at the edge of the quarry, they danced not by the moon but by the light of the sun, and we were bathed in the music of movement, as it expressed the range of emotions from quiet reverence to ecstatic joy. We are so proud to continue the tradition begun 13 years ago by Lisa’s mother, Ina Hahn. Seeing dance performed in a confined space is one thing; seeing it in a natural setting of trees, and rocks, and water…. that’s a whole ‘nuther thing. Our profound thanks to Alison Cook Beatty Dance and her lovely dancers, plus the volunteers, and all of you who helped make such a magical experience possible. A glowing review of the quarry dance landed on the front page of the Gloucester Times on Tuesday, August 11, 2026

And now…. Welcoming the Limón Dance Company

A Choreographic Offering. Photo: Ben McKeown
Pivoting to this week: the entire Limón Company from New York arrived at Windhover on Monday of this week for the very first time and got right to work rehearsing on the outdoor stage. A total of 13 dancers, along with the Artistic Director, Stage Manager, Wardrobe Manager and the Associate Artistic Director are all in residency this week. It is such a pleasure and deep honor to have this fabulous company here at Windhover. After her successful stint on Broadway, Ina Hahn (founder of Windhover) shifted her focus to what was then cutting-edge modern dance, and became closely associated with luminaries José Limón, Doris Humphrey, and Martha Graham. All of them courageously explored entirely new ways to use the human body to express emotion. They were truly trail blazers in the dance world, and one of those trails led right here to Windhover this week.Performances are Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15 — both at 7:00 PM under the tent. Included in the program will be Limón’s famous version of Bach’s “Chaconne,” which will be played live on stage by Cape Ann’s resident virtuoso violinist and conductor, Scott Moore.Tickets have been selling fast, and we are almost sold out, so be sure to get yours now. Here is the link.In addition, the company will host a free Open Rehearsal this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. (Saturday, August 15th) Feel free to come learn about Limón-style modern dance, and to watch the dancers up close and personal. No tickets nor reservations needed.Concluding an inspiring and uplifting weekend will be Stan Strickland and his Quartet playing The American Songbook Re-Visited. Joined by Jorge Perez-Abella on drums, Jesse Williams on bass, and Kevin Barry on guitar, Strickland (also known as Rajahn) will perform on woodwinds, voice, and percussion in a vibrant program that re-imagines beloved Broadway classics from the Great American Songbook alongside songs by contemporary masters such as Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan, with a dose of blues woven in to the mix.
