Deadline for the 2021 Bruce J Anderson Foundation funding opportunities

Don’t miss the Bruce J Anderson Foundation funding opportunity in the New Year! The foundation has helped many local organizations and initiatives annually. Good luck.

Bruce J Anderson Foundation 2020 grants were a who’s who of our community organizations and efforts in targeted areas of specialization: Arts (Cape Ann YMCA; Cape Ann Art Haven; GEF; Gloucester Stage Company); Environmental protection (Backyard Growers; Friends of Halibut State Park; Ocean Alliance); and Mental Health (Gloucester Writers Center; Pathways; Open Door). The family honors their brother and summer visits in Gloucester. The family foundation awarded grants to other communities and efforts, too.

Here’s the announcement from the TPI/Boston Foundation outreach for the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation:

Annisquam Village Church

Members of the Annisquam Village Church volunteer to buy food, prepare and serve a Community Meal for clients of the Open Door several times a year. The serving of Community Meals in the dining room had been suspended due to the pandemic. Indeed, the meal that we prepared on March 11th was their last. Since then, the Open Door has been meeting the community’s needs for such a meal by means of take-out prepared meals (grab and go), and home delivery. Their main fundraiser for the year, the Empty Bowl Benefit, was cancelled. The Open Door needs to make up the shortfall somehow.

Our plan is send financial support equivalent to our expenses on food for the dates the AVC is committed to serve at the Open Door until was are able to volunteer once again.

In the meantime if you would like to donate directly the The Open Door click here: https://www.foodpantry.org/03_How_To_Help/donate.html

Happy Birthday to the best, Pauline Bresnahan

Mother’s Day Arts Abound

artsaboundmagnolia@gmail.com

As Mother’s Day approaches, I am reminded how quickly the world continues to change. I hope you are all staying as well as you can, mentally and physically. The sad news in our world continues to come but I am trying to stay hopeful that a vaccine is coming soon and that when the crisis is over, that we will have all learned to be kinder and more forgiving to each other.

Arts Abound has been busy in our new role as face mask makers! Just today, Massachusetts’ Governor Baker stated that those folks who are not able to socially distance must wear a mask, or face a $300 fine. We expect to continue our posts at our sewing machines! We continue to donate some masks to help front line workers as well as selling them.

Our masks make a wonderful and colorful gift for Mother’s Day. Think of giving them to your mom, or maybe your dog mom, or the woman who you treats you like a mom, or maybe the mom who looks after your kids. What better way to say that you care than wanting to keep someone safer? I believe that we will each need a few masks, as the pandemic continues, so that we can have one at home, one in the wash, one in the car, and one to give to someone who doesn’t have a mask.

You can choose from the following themes: floral, abstract, juvenile, solid, or neutral. At $15 each, these masks are a great way to be fashionable and safer. You can pick them up curbside at Arts Abound or we can ship them for you for a small extra charge. Working with us is a great way to support local artists and to help our shop pay the rent while we are temporarily closed by the state.

I want to thank all of you wonderful customers for your outpouring of support during this difficult time. It has meant more to me than you can imagine…

Stay safe and sane.

Hugs to you all,
Sue Wheeler, owner

Sue Wheeler from Arts Abound

From the Gloucester Daily Times

Editor’s note: This is one in a series of stories on how the arts community is weathering the challenges brought on by COVID-19.

When Gloucester’s Sue Wheeler opened her art gallery last November, she was hopeful after having a decent holiday season of business. Then came the slower months of winter, and then the pandemic struck and now her shop located in the village of Magnolia is temporarily closed.

She opened Arts Abound to celebrate creativity among local artists and sell locally made items from Cape Ann and Ipswich. She also has a few other Massachusetts artists, like one woman from Watertown who makes jewelry from a protected plant in Brazil called “golden grass” because of its metallic sheen. In all, there are 17 artists featured with an array of fine arts and handcrafted gifts, from pottery to paintings to hand-made aprons — and now face masks in the age of COVID-19.

Wheeler, a graphic designer by trade, has other talents. She sews, paints and in her first career, she was a pastry chef.

” ‘We’ve got you covered” is my slogan now,” she said, referring to the masks. “I thought I’d sell one or two but it has been crazy. I do these to order. I ask if they want a design that is abstract, floral, juvenile, baseball or subdued. My hope is they have some joy in wearing these because this is not a happy time. If these designs make somebody smile at least when they have to put it on every day, then maybe it won’t feel like drudgery.”

Wheeler also has donated about a hundred masks so far to healthcare workers and is working on a batch to donate to SeniorCare volunteers.

Helping her with the mask-making endeavors are her 92-year-old mother, Vivian Wheeler, who is involved with ironing and cutting elastic, as well as two nieces, Alex and Jenn Wheeler, who help cut the fabric.

Even though the gallery is closed because of the pandemic, Wheeler now offers virtual shopping with FaceTime, and she also is making “Lock Down” gift baskets, in which customers can choose what they want the basket to contain including a few food items, like local olive oil and Breakwater Coffee.

“They can also choose from handmade cutting boards, whimsical fish mugs, ocean-inspired pottery, jewelry, and local photography to name just a few options,” she said.

“The idea is people can order whatever they want, and it can include hand-made or hand-painted cards. I’m happy to make things to order,” said Wheeler. “I love to do art and create, and opening this shop was a way to combine everything and a way to help other artists. It’s not easy to be an artist.”

Ryan & Wood making sanitizer

On Saturday we went to Ryan & Wood to pick up their hand sanitizer that they are making.  Only one person at a time in the shop with proper social distancing.  This 1 Liter of hand sanitizer filled almost 40 fl. oz of sanitizer.  The containers that were used are pumps of hand soap.  Instead of throwing these plastics in recycle, we use them for other things.  Great idea by Ryan & Wood and thank you.  Always try to shop local.

Thank you Ryan & Wood

Ryan & Wood Distilleries at Blackburn Park.
Because of the COVID-19 crisis, we have switched our production lines to making hand-sanitizer to try and help out. The Federal Government (FDA) recently gave distilleries permission to make this to help with the shortage. It’s made from our vodka distillate according to the World Health Organization recipe of Alcohol (80% of product), Hydrogen Peroxide and Glycerol. https://www.fda.gov/media/136289/download
We intend on donating to local food banks, medical providers, and people who work with elderly. Today we have reached out to the Council of Aging and Cape Ann Food Pantry.

DISTILLING WORLD CLASS SPIRITS SINCE 2006

lineup at still.jpg

In 2006, Bob Ryan and his nephew Dave Wood founded Ryan & Wood Distilleries with the dream of producing small batch spirits in their coastal home of Gloucester, MA on Cape Ann.  Steeped in blue-collar maritime history, Gloucester is an ideal “port of origin” for our whiskies, gins, rums, and vodkas. Our spirits are made the old-fashioned way in our copper pot and column still, fit for hard-working locals and world travelers alike.

BOB RYAN

Growing up, Bob spent most his days on the Gloucester waterfront working at his father’s seafood processing company.  After 35 successful years he sought out a new adventure.  Ryan & Wood proved to be a perfect marriage of his manufacturing knowledge and his wish to pay homage to his hometown’s maritime past, now evident in the artwork on each of our bottles.  Bob loves to say that Gloucester was built by “ships of wood and men of iron,” noting that only the ships have changed.

KATHY RYAN

They say “father knows best,” but when it comes to spirits, this mother and grandmother is the Queen of tasting Whiskey, Rum, Gin, and Vodka.  Possessing the best palette of the crew, Kathy has the final say on what gets the Ryan & Wood stamp of approval.

DOUG RYAN

Doug represents the second generation of the Ryan family to take up distilling.  An attorney by trade, he handles the legal work of our highly-regulated industry but prefers to be milling grains and mashing whiskey!  You can catch him on the production floor during your tour, and at most of our tastings and promotional events pouring spirits and spreading the word.

JENNIFER RYAN

Jennifer handles most of Ryan & Wood’s Social Media and marketing efforts, but her Dominican heritage gives her a special perspective on the world of Rum! She also has the some of the finest handwriting in the region, a necessary skill for writing the barrel and bottle number on each individual bottle of our single-barrel craft whiskies.

In Memoriam, David Nelson Wood, Esq.

The “Wood” of Ryan & Wood, Bob and Kathy’s nephew Dave helped found the company and worked tirelessly to build it from the ground up.  Although he passed away in 2012, his fingerprints still linger in every aspect of the operation.  Dave’s business acumen was only surpassed by his sharp wit and dedication to his family.  We’re proud to carry on his legacy with each bottle of Ryan & Wood.  Cheers, Dave!

A true American gem based in New England; their spirits are incredibly flavorful, aromatic, and smooth. Great stop on a tour of Gloucester or for any spirits fan.

/  JEFF D.  /

“Bob Ryan and his family are among the kindest and generous people you’d ever want to meet! Their distillery is immaculately kept which is a reflection of the pride and passion they put into their business and spirits. Make sure you get a bottle of rum and bring home a little “Glosta.”

/  DON A.  /

“On my most recent trip some friends mentioned Ryan & Wood Distilleries and asked a few of us to go pick up a couple of bottles for them. Upon arriving we were given an impromptu tour that was entertaining and incredibly informative. There is so much care for craft and history in what Ryan & Wood do and you can taste it in their product. They make a great tasting rye and their gin is just insane. In all of New York I think my house will be serving up the best martini.”

“We stopped by an took the tour. This is a family run operation and one of the owners does the tour. She explained all the process for making all of their products (vodka, rum, gin, whiskey). I have been on several brewery tours and a couple distillery tours. This was the most informative. At the end we were able to do a tasting and were impressed enough to but three bottles.”

Hey, I am sewing masks for the folks on the front line…I just have to do something for this crisis. I have heard different opinions as to how much it helps but most say it is better than nothing. Many folks are doing this in my area so the craft stores are out of elastic. Does anyone have some I can have? Even on Amazon it is going to take weeks to get. Anyone wanna join me? I have lots of fabric to donate. LMK. Stay safe.
