It’s cold in Gloucester, but hot in Austin at SXSW

I could complain that SXSW isn’t what it used to be — that’s it has morphed from a music festival to a tech festival (which it has).  Or I could just listen to the music that is still there and see what’s hot.  So I did.  Check out Elle King, who recently recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis.  If you hurry, you can get to Austin in time to see her showcase tomorrow night.

You can watch over 100 SXSW music videos here.  Let us know if you see somebody you’d like us to bring to Gloucester or Beverly.

If you’re already in Austin and checking GMG for a taste of home, I recommend you go see the world premiere of “All Things Must Pass” a documentary about the rise and fall of Tower Records.  Here’s a quote from Tower’s founder, Russ Solomon, that might surprise you, “I don’t buy records anymore. I’m too old for that.”  See the full interview here.

“Take the L out of Lover and it’s Over” – April 22

Don’t you just love that line?  It’s the chorus of this MTV smash hit by Martha Davis and the Motels.

You can see her and the band LIVE, just down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre on April 22 during what is shaping up to be 80s week, with the Smithereens performing there on April 25.

Tickets just went on sale to the public today and they’re selling fast, so you might want to get them (RIGHT HERE) before it’s too late.  Here’s what the critics say:

“…arguably the most charismatic female performer in rock.” – Robert Hilburn, The Los Angeles Times

“Martha Davis, of the Motels, was still strong in voice and admirably delivered hits like ‘Only The Lonely’ and ‘Suddenly Last Summer.'” – Hollywood Reporter (about recent Hollywood Bowl Concert)

And here’s another of her top 10 hits, “Only The Lonely”:

Fly, Chick & Ellen @ Old Sloop Next Saturday 3/21

Fly says that Chick taught him how to play guitar.  Obviously Chick did an excellent job. See for yourself next Saturday 3/21 when they share the stage at Old Sloop, one of the areas best intimate listening venues.

We are called the “Fabulous Supersonics” and we are:

John Fatello – guitar and vocals. John was, most recently, the host of
the popular Open Mic night at the Franco-American Club in Beverly. He
has also backed up such blues luminaries as James Cotton and others in his career.
The band features veterans of local bands Quits, the Nor’easters and Points North. And the Diva, Westward Ho of the Diva Hos. We are covering tunes from Steely Dan to the Stones. Eric Clapton to Stevie Wonder. With a dash of Iggy Pop and Tom Petty.

dave sag rl 4.3.2014

Dave says,

It’s Snowbank Removal Week as temperatures threaten to climb into the Forties. I loved my forties, when I was at the peak of my insanity, rather than being the recondite cretin that I am now: talking to pigeons and wiping saliva off my chin. But enough about me: what about that finger in your eye music happening on Thursday? And that guy who had a seizure whilst skydiving? What’s the big deal? Happens to me all the time….
So, this Thursday let’s have a ball with a sorta new guy: Mr. Tim Gartland. He’s been here before. He’s really talented and deserves your rabid attention. Tim hails from Cleveland, where he was arrested for arson after setting the Cuyahoga river on fire. Now he’s gonna torch your cerebellum with his swingfoot style of harp and vogelsang. He’s got a really cool voice, sort of a cross between Arthur Prysock and Arthur Prysock. With hints of mint courtesy of Metamucil Pete, my street connection.
Backing him up will be that plisky, spoon-bending master of glitar, Mr. Jon Ross. Trader Joe’s secret weapon. Jon is one of my favorite musicians. Fluent on Guitar, bass and drums. drives a cool ’92 Buick Wagon, too. What’s not to like? Drums beaten by Mr. Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer. I’m on bass, trying once again to steal second. C’mon down and have a good time. It’ll be warm! You might even find a parking spot!

And, don’t forget: Next Monday The Old Saltys will be controlling the universe from our secret base hidden at the Rose Baker Senior Center in downtown Gloucester. From 1 to 3, we will be controlling transmission. You ought to see these guys before it’s too late and your prune juice stock tanks on NASDAC. I really mean it: it’s the best show in town. You’ll see….

Winter Zydeco Party with Amy Nicole and Zydeco Soul @ The Rhumb Line 2.24.2015

zydeco

Are you tired of all this snow? Are you getting a case of those “Winter Blues”? Well then we’ve got the cure for YOU!

On Tuesday February 24th at 9PM Gloucester’s very own The Rhumb Line will be serving up a hot heaping portion of Louisiana Zydeco to melt all of those blues away!

Yup. Hailing all the way from Opelousas, Louisiana, Amy Nicole and Zydeco Soul are going to share their sweet Cajun Zydeco sounds will all of us here on Cape Ann.

Gary Gorczyca

I got to see and hear a special preview of this band last night at the Monday Night Open Jam @ The Rhumb line and man they were good. You wanna dance…well it will be hard not to with this lively fun music.!

Joanne

Is Taylor Swift gonna sue me for this post?

I have to admit I kinda like Taylor Swift.  She’s cute and she can write a hit song.  But yesterday, what little admiration I had for her vanished when I heard this piece on the radio informing us that Taylor Swift now owns the phrase “Speak Now.”  That’s right, according to NPR, Taylor Swift “… was granted a trademark for the phrase ‘speak now.'”  But that’s not all.  She’s applied for dozens of trademarks, including one for the phrase “Love, Love, Love” (see a list of her trademark applications here)  Wow!  Something is awry here.

Let’s start with the fact that “Love, Love, Love” is beginning of a Beatles song by Lennon-McCartney that is far better than anything Taylor Swift has ever written or is likely to write during her lifetime.

Don’t get me wrong, artists deserve copyright protection for their works and I heartily approve of giving songwriters copyrights to their songs.  But Taylor Swift has a trademark on the phrase “Speak Now” giving her exclusive rights to use it on “Textiles and textile goods, not included in other classes; bed and table covers.” See the detail here.  So if you print out this post and stick it on your pillow, you might actually be breaking the law.

Perhaps if there are any copyright lawyers reading this, you could answer me this: Without infringing on Little Ms. Swift, could I sell a tablecloth for wedding receptions that said, “Speak Now of Forever Hold Your Piece”?

How does this happen?  And what’s next?  Is Paul McCartney going to challenge her application for “Love, Love Love”?  Is he going to apply for a trademark for the phrase “She Loves You” or better yet, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”?

Here are some videos to watch as you ponder these lofty questions:

Here’s George Harrison’s hit “My Sweet Lord”, the subject of one of the most famous and contentious copyright infringement suits ever (Harrison lost — see here)

Here’s Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” another song, which was the subject of copyright infringement, but he and Tom Petty (writer of “I Won’t Back Down”, the chorus of which really is very similar) worked things out amicably (see details here.)

Let’s show our friends from warm climates how we New Englanders Party in Winter

Booker T’s new 2 CD/DVD set

Tomorrow (Sat 2/21) we welcome Memphis Soul legend and Stax recording artist, Booker T. Jones and his hot young band to the Larcom Theatre for his only New England stop on this U.S. tour.  Even though they’ve toured the world, I’ll bet they haven’t seen this much snow on the ground very often — and probably never in the Boston area.

We’re also offering a very limited number of VIP packages that include an intimate meet & greet with Booker T. before the show (just a few people) along with some wicked good gifts, including:

Get the VIP package (more details here) and be sure to tell Booker T. how much you appreciate his trek up here during our worst winter in a very long time and prove to him that nothing can keep us from enjoying great music!  Opening the show are local favorites Sarah Seminski and Eric Reardon.

Check out this video of Booker T. with Gary Clark, Jr (one of the guests on his new CD):

And here’s Sarah Seminski & Eric Reardon performing “Try A Little Tenderness” at the Larcom back in November (a song Booker T. recorded with Otis Redding when they were at Stax Records together).  Get tickets here.
