Hey Joey.
Gloucester photographer, Michael Chamness (Wings and WavesT) just uploaded
some amazing photos from the Blackburn Challenge. Check these out! If you
like them, please share them with GMG followers.
These are raw, unedited photos showing the ‘true grit’ that goes into this
‘marathon’ rowing/paddling event- 20+ miles circumnavigating Cape Ann. Like
Blackburn himself, these racers are determined to reach their personal goals
with courage, determination, stamina and the support of fellow
rowers/paddles and spectators. What a great local event with participants
from near and far (one paddler flew in from Hawaii!)
The finish line offered a ‘rainbow’ of boats on Pavilion beach as rowers
celebrated after finishing to delicious BBQ from Red Bones of Somerville,
Ipswich Beer, and rockin’ music from Orville Giddings. Despite some dramatic
and threatening lightening flashes streaking against a black sky, the
weather held out so the race could finish with a flare! Looking forward to
next year’s Blackburn Challenge! For photos from Wings and Waves

Joey,
I spent 4 days in New Hampshire with New England Handicapped Sports Association, a great bunch of Veterans and all the volunteers which made the event run smoothly. The Vets were amazing in their intensity, encouragement and support for each other …and partying! Emotions run high for team wins but also for individual accomplishments regardless of finishing order. It’s a wonderful fellowship that draws more veterans each year for competition in kayaking, bicycling, shooting, waterskiing, geo-caching and fly fishing. I was asked to help photograph the event and I was blown away with all I saw, heard and learned. Given the chance I will be back in a heartbeat! The GMG Baseball hat was a hit and there may be a few new subscribers!
Hi Joey,
I’m sure you have seen the kids on the Sail GHS Team out in the harbor having a great time racing in all weather throughout the year. During the summer months, they are offering Summer Sailing Clinics in their
new, C 420 sailboats and even in their newly acquired Laser! Level II Sailing Coach, Guy Fiero is at the helm and with assistance from his very, dedicated team of volunteers. This is the biggest bargain for sailing on Cape Ann at ONLY $85 per week, Monday through Friday 8 – 11:30am. Five days a week and still time in the afternoon to hit the beach! Kids with some sailing experience ages 10 and up are welcome. Classes meet at Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center and there is no need to pre-register! Just bring yourself, your friends, and your life jackets if you have them. Sailors should arrive promptly at 8:00 am as space is limited. Discounts available.
All proceeds from this ongoing fundraiser go to Sail GHS, a non-profit organization to help defray operating costs and provide the youth of Cape Ann and beyond with this wonderful sailing opportunity!
Please contact sailghs@yahoo.com or Guy Fiero at 978-290-7894 with any questions.
Thanks so much for sharing!

As we prepare for this Saturday’s on-site P&D Committee meeting, I wanted to present our closing statement from the report we submitted to P&D back in January.
The following text was provided to me by Mountain Bike Advocate and Hall of Fame Inductee Peter Webber of Colorado. Please share with your readers because I believe it accurately summarizes the question the City of Gloucester needs to answer.
"When considering any park activity, there are certainly impacts that happen, but the question is, are those impacts acceptable, and are they reasonable and appropriate in relation to the big picture of the specific park and the Park Department’s mission and management policies. One reason the park exists is for recreation. There is an impact of providing recreation. It is appropriate.
"Recreational activities have an impact on the facility. This is clearly true of field sports like football and soccer, and even golf, which are played upon unsustainable grass fields which require weekly, or even daily, maintenance as long as they exist. Playgrounds, sand boxes, flower beds, swim beaches, and trails require repair and maintenance as long as they exist. An extreme example is swimming pools, which require maintenance literally 24/7.These maintenance and repair needs are clearly acceptable to the government and public – even though they cost a huge amount month after month. We understand it is necessary, and worth it.Then why is temporary impact to Stage Fort Park not reasonable and acceptable once a year? Who bears the maintenance costs for the sports fields? The participants or event organizers? For the above cases, no. In the case of cyclocross, the event organizers have taken ownership of the repairs to the park."
We respectfully ask that the City Council please let the tradition of world class cyclocross continue in Stage Fort Park.
Best Regards,
Paul Boudreau

The sun had just climbed above the horizon (at left) as I paddled down the Annisquam River to Gloucester High School where rowers and paddlers would register for this year’s Blackburn Challenge. The event is named for Gloucester fisherman, Howard Blackburn, and it commemorates his desperate mid-winter rowing of a banks dory 60 miles to refuge back in 1883. Howard Blackburn’s principal adversary was bitter cold temperatures that took a costly toll on his fingers and toes. Nonetheless, he toughed it out and prevailed. Participants in yesterday’s event faced the opposite extreme….HEAT!…and plenty of it!!! The questions going through my pre-event mind were "is it prudent to wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) while exerting in this kind of heat?" and "do I have enough drinking water onboard?" My answers: PFD would be strapped to my deck and 100 ounces of water proved adequate.
As participating boats congregated near the starting line, a bit of a traffic jam occurred when human powered boats of all types were passing under a raised drawbridge (most probably a "don’t do")…

Hi Joey,
The Gloucester Times is going to run a story about the Gran Prix of Gloucester, possibly in Saturday’s edition. I wanted to share the statement that I provided them. Please feel free to run all of this.
On a personal note, I love Gloucester. My family and I are regular visitors at Wingaersheek Beach, on rare nights we get a babysitter, my wife & I hit Duckworth’s. My favorite drive when I need to get my toddler to sleep is heading north on 127 to Folly Cove.
As you’ll see below, we’ve had to investigate other host cities. Rest assured that we are working with the Gloucester Chief Administrative Officer to close some issues. We recently had a site visit with the Chief Administrative Officer, the Operations Manager of Public Services, Fire Chief and Building Inspector and made significant progress. Finally, we’re going through the permit process.
Best,
Paul Boudreau
We are committed to hosting a world-class event in the Greater Boston area on the weekend of Sept. 28-29. Since the fall of 2012, after the completion of the race weekend, Gloucester city officials raised concerns with the event. We have endeavored to address these concerns to the best of our abilities. Discussions are ongoing, and we remain optimistic that we can reach an agreement. However, given the uncertainty that Gloucester would continue to be a feasible host city, we faced no other choice but to explore options for other potential host cities in the area.
Athletes from across the United States and Europe are currently making travel plans for their cyclocross race season. As the kickoff event of the premier professional cyclocross race series in the United States, we feel we have an obligation to continue to host this event. In addition, the economic impact it has provided to the community has grown tremendously. Based on a Bentley University economic impact study, roughly 40 percent of participants stay in the Cape Ann region during the race weekend. In the race’s fourteen years, we have strived to be mindful, cooperative community partners and are dedicated to building upon the relationship with the city . However, if the Gloucester venue is not a viable location, we will be forced to seek an alternative site that meets the standards that racers have come to expect from this event.
Editor Nore from Joey C
I am fully supportive of the Gran Prix, the quality of the people it brings here and what they put back into the community between the businesses that benefit and the showcasing of our City as a venue for world class events. Make no mistake about it, these athletes travel from all over the world to participate.
They have demonstrated that they leave the park in better shape than when they arrive. (Pictures don’t lie homie), and show that they are willing to listen to, and work with the powers that be to insure that people are left happy.
Hi, Joey,
The Essex Youth Clinic, 7-20-13, and Youth Triathlon, 8-3-13, are just around the corner. If you would please post this announcement to your view of Cape Ann / Gloucester / Essex, the Board of Health would be much appreciate it. Might your girls compete?
Thanks,
Ann White
Clerk, Essex BOH
The Essex Board of Health is holding the fifth annual Essex Youth Triathlon on Saturday, August 3, at Centennial Grove / Chebacco Lake in Essex for youth of all abilities ages 5 through 15. This is a USAT sanctioned event.
The BOH will also hold a free Essex Youth Triathlon clinic (USAT membership is required) on Saturday, July 20th starting at 9 a.m. for those registered for the triathlon & those considering registration. This clinic will review set up, transition, race courses, bike safety, and other valuable race info. The clinic is expected to run until approximately noon. Phone (978 768-7614) or email (boh@essexma.org) to let us know planned attendance. Please be sure the child wears a bathing suit & brings their bike, helmet, sneakers and towel.
A BOH goal is to keep this race affordable, so that all who want can participate. Entry fees are $25 per entrant, with a family cap of $50. Because this is a USAT sanctioned event, all participants must be USAT members. The Deadline for registration is noon, July 31 or when capacity is reached. A $12 late fee will be charged for registrations received after July 21.
Additional information and printable registration forms are available on the Town of Essex website, http://www.essexma.org, or by calling the Essex Board of Health at 978 768-7614. Online registration is available at http://www.active.com.  For USAT membership, please go to http://www.usatriathlon.org
Because our goal is to keep the Essex Youth Triathlon safe, affordable & enjoyable for all, the BOH depends exclusively on donations and registration fees to make this a success. The Board continues to need & welcome donations of funding, goods (raffle prizes, food & drink, etc), talent (entertainment, photography, etc.), and (maybe most importantly) volunteers to help & oversee the racers. If you, or anyone you know of, can help in any way please contact the Essex Board of Health. The BOH, race participants and their families thank you.
Gentlemen,
The Gloucester Football Team will be sponsoring their 2nd Annual Mattress Fundraiser on July 20th at the GHS Field House. All proceeds will go towards offsetting USER FEES for our Student Athletes.
I was wondering if you could post the flyer in your paper or on your respective websites in order to promote the event? Any help would be appreciated, we are trying to eliminate USER FEES completely.
Thank you again for all your support and let me know if you have any questions.
