Eating in Playa del Carmen

20120110-064101.jpg

At the risk of jinxing us I have to say one of the most pleasant surprises about Playa del Carmen has been the dining experiences.

At every place we’ve eaten be it fancy dinner, casual lunch or breakfast everything has been super fresh and the service SUPERB!

I’d point out a few as highlights but honestly they’ve ALL been highlights!

Lateral for dinner grouper with a a porcini mushroom cream sauce over it topped with lyonnaise potatoes. The juice bar 100% Natural, the place in this picture where they serve your food on your own personal mini-habachi, Sensei Beach Club, Thai dish. Emphasis everywhere on freshness.

Ever wonder what makes local, organic food that much better? Find out from our family friendly program “Garden to Table”. This event is sponsored by the Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library in association with the Cape Ann Farmers Market. It takes place on January 28, 2012 from 10AM – 1PM, at the Manchester-by-the-Sea Community Center. Various Cape Ann food distributers discuss the importance of buying food locally and what it takes to bring that food to your table. Learn about the obstacles and benefits of what they do, and why it is important for our community, our environment and ourselves. There is no charge to attend. During the event, vendors will be selling, sampling, and supplying information supplied from 10 am-12pm. Then from 12pm-1pm the floor will open for a panel discussion. Some of our guests will include Maggie Mehaffey of Mehaffey Farm, Catherine Steinhoff of Sea Street Soups, Niki Bogin of Cape Ann Farmer’s Market, Gloucester Back Yard Farmers, Shady Oaks Organics Mushrooms, The Open Door Food Pantry, The Trustees of the Reservations and Moraine Farm.

Good Chinese Take-out

No city or town is complete without a few Chinese restaurants. When I first moved to Gloucester several months ago, I was happy to see a Chinese restaurant right around the corner from my residence at St. Ann’s rectory: Ocean Garden (1 Maplewood Ave. in Gloucester).  According to the employee I spoke to there, Lily Chen, they have been in business for eleven years.  That means that their food and prices are good enough to attract a faithful clientele.

Ocean Garden, 1 Maplewood Ave. Not much to look at, but the take-out is very tasty!

I have ordered meals there several times (most recently this Sunday) and the food has been consistently hot and good, and I have always had friendly service.

Chicken with mixed vegetables and rice

Their wonton soup is just the way I like it, with a very flavorful broth and not-too-thick wontons.  I wolfed it down before I remembered to take a photo…

They are primarily a take-out restaurant, although there is one table where you could sit and eat. They deliver, and if you ask for delivery you might meet this friendly man:

Mike Marshall, one of the delivery men

He and his father Robert Marshall handle the deliveries. As I arrived, Robert was driving away with a delivery in a black SUV with a festive Christmas wreath still on the hood ornament.  Remember, Christmas isn’t over yet! Not until January 9th (at least, in the Catholic Church).

So if you’re looking for a nice hot Chinese meal, this could be a good option.   Lily said their specialty is the combination plate “General Gau’s Chicken”, but she added that some of their most popular dishes are on the appetizer menu – stock favorites like crab rangoon and chicken wings.

Full information about their menu, phone number, etc., is available on their website.

Fred Bodin Shares- Emily’s Bar Card

Emily’s Bar Card

Fred writes-

It’s true, a little thoughtfulness across the bar or table goes a long, long way. Last September I drove to the North Shore Mall to buy an iMac. At Apple’s Genius Bar, the technician asked me to come back in an hour while he installed software and documents onto my new computer. So I walked over to P. F. Chang’s restaurant to order a takeout lunch for myself and recuperating friend back in Rockport. We’d been to Chang’s only a few times, it’s always tasty and a positive experience. I sat at the bar, and said "hi" to the bartender. Emily, who had served us before, is also a Rockport native. She didn’t remember my name, but did remember the Rockport connection, and asked where my friend Janet was. After she poured a beer for me, Emily wrote this note on a bartender’s card. Guess where we go every time we’re in Peabody.

Follow Up- A Note To Restaurant Owners

Following up on my thoughts about service at restaurants and bars for the owners and managers and servers and bartenders-

The point I was trying to make in yesterday’s tirade about the lousy attitude at that particular restaurant was that it behooves everyone to do with that establishment to engage your patrons.

I completely understand if the place is mobbed and your staff is doing everything in their power to get people their food or drink that they shouldn’t be expected to have a full on conversation with every customers.  I get it believe me.  If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time at all you know how often I eat out and like to sing the praises of the awesome restaurants we have here locally.  But even if you’re mobbed you should still be able to afford a smile or gesture of acknowledgment.

There are coffee shops like George’s, Sugar Mag’s and Fort Square Cafe that even when they are full on balls to the walls (I use these places as examples because they are usually very busy and for good reason) the owners and/or servers find ways to engage their customers.  It’s an art form.   There are plenty of lunch and dinner joints that perform the customer service thing equally as well.

The thing is that while I know that there are some patrons that no matter how good the service you provide they will break out their calculator and leave exactly 15-20% of their bill regardless of how well they were served or treated.  However I know there are enough people like myself that if you go just a little out of your way to make me feel welcome that tip on a $10 breakfast can easily go to $3 from $2 or in large parties out for dinner when we are all throwing money in toss in an extra $5 or more because they had a great time because they were made to feel special by their server.  Now $3 instead of $2 is 50% more and at the end of the day if you are working for tips and then at the end of the year you add all that up you just gave yourself a huge raise.

That’s all from the server or bartender’s perspective, what about the owners of these restaurants?

If you think I’ll be going back to that restaurant/bar from the other night any time soon you’re crazy.  There truly are way too many great restaurants/bars in Gloucester where the people welcome you even if they don’t know you and at the very least offer a smile when you belly up.  If you’re not insanely busy and can’t offer up a smile you’ve lost me forever, multiply that times every other person like me.

I think it would benefit you as a restaurant/bar owner to go to one of these places and observe how the servers and bartenders interact with their customers- The Farm Bar and Grill, Duckworth’s, Passports, Topside Grille, Lat 43, Ithaki, Stones Pub, Mamie’s Kitchen.  Please don’t take offense if your restaurant isn’t listed here,  there are way more very worthy local restaurant candidates but for the sake of space I’ll just highlight a few of the standouts.

Check them out and then check out how your staff interacts with their customers.  Are your servers doing anything other than the bare minimum to take an order and bring people their food/drink?  Because in as competitive a restaurant scene as we have here in Gloucester if your staff isn’t good enough to offer up a smile then you are losing your share of customers to the places that are.

Look, I get that not everyone, everywhere can be “ON” all the time, but when I’ve been to the same place a couple of times in a row and get the same “I could care less if you’re here or not” attitude, let me tell you, I’m gonna opt out in favor of someplace that wants to take my money.

Makin The Baked Stuffed Shrimp With Sista Felicia On the Gloucester Daily Times Taste of The Times

image

From the Gloucester Times Taste of The Times-

According to Felicia Ciaramitaro Mohan this dish is “the Highlight of our Christmas Dinner” and guarantees that it will be the “best shrimp you will ever taste.” Unlike many of her recipes, this one is not from her Grandmother but rather from her mother.
What makes it so good? Read below to see.

As always you can click at along the top bar of GMG where it says “Sista Felicia Recipes” and access them at your leisure.  They are all right there with a simple search.

From The Times Taste of The Times website-

If you grew up in a Sicilian or Italian household or ever went to one at this time of year you may remember these treats. These are an Italian holiday treat that you can make ahead and leave in serving dishes around your house. The way that Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan makes them, based on her Grandmother Felicia’s recipe, are little bites of fried dough slathered in a honey/Kayo syrup mixture and topped with bits of chocolate, toasted nuts and fresh cinnamon.

Kay Ellis writes-

In case anyone is wondering, Discover Gloucester, the Destination Marketing Organization, held their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at Guiseppe’s Restaurant. Close to 40 members of the business community were on hand to see the presentation of awards to community volunteers who do more than their share to promote this island as a destination.

Special recognition was given to Louise Palazzola and her daughter Denise Foley for taking the winning photograph (a shot of the Schooner Ernestina and the Man at the Wheel) that was on this year’s Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide.

The Good on Ya! Award was given to two volunteers who dedicate an hour each Saturday to clean litter from Downtown Gloucester. Several years ago, they saw a need and jumped in with gloved hands and yellow trash bags. They have recruited helpers, but continue to volunteer picking up trash from streets and beaches as part of the “One Hour at a Time Gang. The honorees were Donna Ardizzoni from Circle Consulting and Bob Gillis from the Cape Ann Savings Bank.

The Golden Sou’wester Award, in memory of Harriet Webster and Peter Prybot, honors someone who recognizes how fishing and tourism feed off each other to create a more desirable destination. Joey Ciaramataro, aka Joey C., of Capt. Joe and Sons, creator of the Good Morning Gloucester blog and lover of all things Gloucester, was this year’s winner. Sista Felicia Ciaramataro Mohan accepted the award for her brother Joey, who was “down the wharf” and unable to attend.

The Discover Gloucester Heritage Award, in memory of Joe Garland, was given for understanding the importance of our maritime heritage and working to spread that history to others. In 2012, the 28th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place over Labor Day weekend. The Schooner Festival Committee was recognized for its work continuing the tradition of celebrating Gloucester’s maritime history. The award was presented to Daisy Nell, one of the founders of the Schooner Festival Committee in 1984 and the current Committee Chair.

The final award was given to the Volunteer Extraordinaire. Discover Gloucester’s Board of Directors surprised the Volunteer Executive Director, Linn Parisi with a gift for all her efforts. Five years ago, she recognized that a combined marketing effort could make things happen much more than individual businesses could. She stepped up to help Gloucester market herself as a destination, by organizing the DMO. Since then, Linn has worked tirelessly to help bring more people to Gloucester.

That’s it, in a large nutshell.
