Two Franks

The guys are always working super hard down at Captain Joe and Sons so its’ great to see a lighthearted moment.

Frankie Ciaramitaro and Frank Ciolino share a laugh.

Have you treated yourself and your family to a lobster feast recently? Why not–it’s so inexpensive? The price and quality of lobsters from Captian Joe’s is UNBEATABLE–only $5. per pound!!! My daughter Liv and I were eating them “by the twos” when she visited recently!

What are you waiting for-the price to return to normal?

“He who does not eat cheese, will go mad.”

This French proverb is printed on T Shirts and hangs over the door at The Cave — 44 Main St.  For some reason, it took Vickie and me 3 weeks to get there, but we finally made it yesterday and boy are we glad we did.  Then we took our bounty to a friend’s house.  The best way to  enjoy good food is with good friends, each being enhanced by the other.  Check out the video to see what we got and how it tasted.

Laura, who owns The Cave, tells me she’s got a 3 year lease and they will be open year round.  Sounds like a plan to me.  Vickie and I will be in again soon.

Just as The Cave has something for every palate, tonight there’s music for every possible taste on Cape Ann from string quartet to bluegrass to rock, soul, reggae, pop, New Orleans jazz, blues, metal, singer/songwriters — you name it.  Don’t stay home.  Check the live music lineup and get out on the town!

Sunday Night at the Lobster Pool

View of Ipswich Bay from the Lobster Pool Restaurant Rockport

Sunday night we arrived at the Lobster Pool just as the sun was setting. By 11:30 that morning a line had formed out the door, yet despite this fact, we were greeted graciously and had a delicious dinner of (what else) Captain Joe’s lobster rolls.

Breakfast with Tomato Marmalade

A while back I mentioned Alexander Thompson’s delicious tomato marmalade (I mentioned it here and here).  It might sound unexpected (I had never heard of tomato marmalade before), but tomatos are fruit, and Alexander’s recipe really works.  They served it at the opening of The Cave with cheese and crackers, which was a great combination, but it’s also good on plain old toast for breakfast!

I put it on whole wheat toast with a glass of orange juice.  Just a part of this nutritious breakfast!

You can buy it on line or, today, at the Thursday Cape Ann Farmers’ Market at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, 3-6PM under the blue tent.

He also makes the most addicting bread & butter pickles… also available on line and at the Farmer’s Market.

Supper at Café Bishco

Café Bischo is a little restaurant at 51 Main Street. Yesterday I had supper there with a friend, and it was great as always! We ate at a table outside on the sidewalk, enjoying the sunny summer evening.

I had their “Mediterranean Vegetable Soup”:

It was delicious, and was accompanied by heated, buttered, fresh bread, which was perfect for dipping in the tomato-based broth.

The sun shone bright through my glass of water:

To be honest, all I can vouch for from personal experience is their soup.  That’s the only thing I’ve ever eaten at this venue (and at several other restaurants), because I am a huge soup fan, and their soup is always good!  But the people with whom I have eaten there have also enjoyed their victuals, whether soup or otherwise.  Plus, I have seen a steady flow of people buying their ice cream or frozen yogurt, so that must be good too!

Actually, I can also vouch for their friendly customer service.  So, if while on or near Main Street, you get a hankering for a bite to eat, hot or cold, you should give Café Bishco a try!

Video- Taste Gloucester Tour Highlights Video From Terry Weber

image

Last Saturday, I was lucky enough to participate in the first ‘Taste Gloucester’ walking tour. The tour highlighted downtown restaurants and food shops, with a dash of history thrown in.

Patrick Halloran, a Gloucester native who now serves as a fireman in Somerville, served as our tour guide. He graduated GHS in 2002 and his love for Gloucester was apparent as he proudly told us various tales from Gloucester’s history. Patrick himself was a highlight of the tour, with his friendly personality, sense of humor and depth of knowledge.

The tour started at the Fitz Hugh Lane House on Harbor Loop and ended at Turtle Alley Chocolates. Along the way we visited the Topside Grill, Virgilio’s, Intershell’s Fish Market and the Cape Ann Brewery—just to name a few. We enjoyed food samples prepared just for us, shopping opportunities, as well as great customer service by the local shopkeepers. At other stops we learned about the history of the Greasy Pole, the tale of Howard Blackburn, and the history of the Universalist Church. Check out the video for more details.

Who is this tour best suited for? Locals who want a fun and delicious way to spend a few hours; locals who have guests visiting; and tourists and newcomers who need an introduction to the downtown area. I guess what I am saying is, this tour is for everyone! J Personally, I had never shopped The Cave or Intershell’s Fish Market, and thanks to the tour, I will be a returning customer at both places.

Because the ‘Taste Gloucester’ tour is a new (and fun!) venture, it is sure to evolve and grow. Patrick, the owner, is open to feedback and ideas. For more information on how to sign up for a tour visit www.tastegloucester.com. Bon appetit!

McDonald’s on Maplewood Avenue is almost done…

I hear that it will be opening in a couple of weeks! The sign on the fence says that they are hiring now…

Adam Bolonsky Requests Recipes For fresh Calamari

Lots of anglers are catching 6" to 8" squid off the inside edge of the Eastern Point Breakwater with Sabiki rigs.

Anyone have a good spicy recipe for what to do with the fresh catch?

By the way, now that the Audubon Society runs the lot at the breakwater, don’t forget that it costs $5.00 to park there for the day!

As for access, tell the guard at the gate by Niles Beach that you’re headed for the breakwater. There’s a public right of way along the AEPR (Association of Eastern Point Residents) private speed-bumped roads.

As for Niles Pond, it’s a Great Pond open to public use.
