Here is the recipe for the Corn Salad that I’ve been getting requests for. It comes from the Barefoot Contessa-
Fresh Corn Salad
5 ears of corn, shucked
1/2 cup small-diced red onion (1 small onion)
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 tablespoons good olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup julienned fresh basil leaves
In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the corn for 3 minutes until the starchiness is just gone. Drain and immerse it in ice water to stop the cooking and to set the color. When the corn is cool, cut the kernels off the cob, cutting close to the cob.
Toss the kernels in a large bowl with the red onions, vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Just before serving, toss in the fresh basil. Taste for seasonings and serve cold or at room temperature.

Does anyone remember when at the local Dunkin Donuts they had a little placard that stated “Tipping Not Allowed”? When did tipping for pouring black coffee became a common practice.
I’m a straight 20% or more tipper at a restaurant, but just don’t get tipping at a counter for coffee, especially when you’re simply getting a black cup of joe that you are expected to prepare yourself.
I don’t tip at a sub shop, I don’t tip when the guy fills my gas tank, I don’t tip when someone checks out my groceries, I don’t tip the person at McDonalds, Papa Ginos, Quiznos, KFC, Taco Hell, Burger King, or any other joint where the paid employee is serving me at a counter.
For service at a breakfast shop where I am seated the waitress/waiter gets the 20% plus and never less then 20% on the total bill including tax. I give whatever change I have under a quarter to the coffee counter tip jar, but still find it pretty ridiculous.
What really gets me is when there is a tip jar at Starbucks where they cringe at you if you ask them to put your cream and sweetener in. WTF dude, you just poured a cup of coffee FFS. You’re not clearing my table, bringing me refills, preparing my coffee a special way, bringing it out of the kitchen to where I am seated, or disposing my cup after I’m done! I’m taking the GD black coffee that you poured over to the station where I prepare it myself, and then leaving with the cup which I will dispose of myself. Oy!

About 4 or 5 years ago you could buy Stone Soup Cafe coffee mugs at Stone Soup in Ipswich. My MIL liked them so much she bought a bunch.
When I dropped by to take pictures I asked if they had a mug handy for me to photograph for the blog but there was nary one to be found in the joint. My guess is that they are such cool mugs that over time one gets clipped here and there and before you know it there are no longer any mugs and the owners decide against putting them out. I hope that’s not the case but the cynic in me tells me that it is.

On my way to do some business this morning I dropped by Stone Soup in Ipswich to confirm the rumors that they are indeed coming to Gloucester in Lobster Cove. From what the waitress told me they should be open within a week or so.

Broccoli, Bacon, Onion, Cheese Salad, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
From The Mrs after many emails asking for the recipe-
Brocolli Salad Recipe:
(I don’t add the raisins or the sunflower seeds, but I do add 1 pkg shredded Cheddar Cheese and instead of the green onions, I use 1 large red onion)
* 1 pound bacon
* 4 cups broccoli florets
* 5 green onions, chopped
* 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
* 1/4 cup golden raisins
* 1 cup mayonnaise
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 6 tablespoons red wine vinegar
DIRECTIONS
1. Place bacon in a large skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly browned. Cool, crumble, and set aside.
2. In a large bowl, toss together broccoli, green onions, sunflower seeds, raisins, and bacon.
3. In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, sugar, and red wine vinegar. Toss with vegetables to coat. Cover, and chill until serving.
Joey adds-
She didn’t say this part but I remember her mentioning that if she is having a party she chops up all the ingredients and puts them in the fridge the night before in separate containers and then mixes them together just before serving to maintain the crispness of the veggies.
Fence Down Between Lat 43 and Fishermen’s Wharf, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
The fence has been taken down between Latitude 43 and Fishermen’s Wharf.
I don’t know if Fishermen’s Wharf has been purchased by McDonough and Co, but it seems that way. There are still signs up in the Fishermen’s Wharf parking lot that say “authorized parking only” but it looks like the lot has been cleared and cleaned up for restaurant parking.
We went last night to use one of the Where The Locals Go Lat 43 buy two sushi rolls and get a free California Roll coupon and we parked in the Fishermen’s Wharf lot. The public walkway between Fishermen’s Wharf and Lat 43 is complete with some interesting pavers and the deck is certainly inviting. I took some pictures this morning at 4:45AM from the observation deck in front of Lat 43. Its a pretty good view if you are into the industrial harbor thing. Got some shots of the dorys that Damon uses and are tied up on the Saint Peter’s Marina floats.

She makes my point about who gets to decide what is a humane and not humane way to kill a lobster much better than I do in my video interview with the salesman of The Crustastun at The International Boston Seafood Show.
