When these photos were taken on August 15th, 1939, the Village of Annisquam was having it’s 93rd annual Sea Fair. Established in 1846, this fair was held during the Civil War at a youthful 15 years old, over the brief Spanish American War in 1898 it was approaching age 50, during the "War to End All Wars" (WW I) it had existed for 70 years, and  the Sea Fair was nearly 100 years old for WW II. This Saturday, July 28th, Gloucester’s Annisquam Village will host it’s 166th Sea Fair. Go there if you can.

You can read about the Fair on Good Morning Gloucester, and I can tell you that it’s a down home, grass roots, pure New England Yankee event. It’s all about family, community, church, neighborhood, and especially tradition.

The Annisquam Sea Fair runs from 10am until 3pm. Dinner on the Annisquam Bridge (shown above in 1890) is served from 5pm to 7pm. Do make a reservation.

This charming woman is selling post card prints for Gloucester photographer Alice M. Curtis (1871 – 1971), whose life’s work I bought in the form of her negatives. Some people seeing this GMG post will recognize their great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and perhaps even themselves as children. I’m hoping to see some interesting comments and recollections.

Sea Turtle Sighting From SAL RANDAZZA III

Hi, Joey

My wife Joan and I were on our way back from Tillies Bank  about 17 miles SE from shore when we spotted the turtle. We thought it was a piece of debris. I have spent lots of time on the local  waters  and have never seen a sea turtle. It is no shark but it was pretty cool to see.

Joey:

Two photos of the Thomas E. Lannon, taken aboard the Ardelle, towards the end of the sunset cruise to benefit The Gloucester City Hall Restoration. The first is a sunset photo and the second at dusk. It was a fun event with great food and entertainment on a calm, beautiful summer night in Gloucester harbor.

Take care — Christopher Lewis

Fishermens Wives’ Memorial

Designed by Gloucester sculptor Morgan Faulds Pike, the statue captures the all too familiar pose of waiting-with-strength known to wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters of fishermen and mariners whose family members chose to go out to sea. The memorial is a reminder that while the men are out at sea, the women are active in the community engaged in the work of promoting and preserving the Gloucester and New England fishing industry and helping active and retired fishermen and their families live better lives.  When I look at this picture, the mother’s face and her children holding her hand and her shirt say it all.

Hi Joey:  Reading some  of the interesting comments this morning  We are all so proud and happy for Harold Burnham and his now famous Pinky Schooner Ardelle.  I took this photo of her before she left for her berth in Gloucester.  His recognition and award were well deserved.

Even moments of meditation can make a positive difference in our health and attitude. ;- ) I imagine you have many of those moments while out on the water with beautiful reflective sunrises, sunsets and moonrises on Cape Ann. I’m finally getting to my photos from the Firemen’s Parade in Rockport… This one was processed with CameraBag2. The effects are sort of like Instagram on steroids for desktop operating systems (without built-in social media functions).

2012 Reid’s Ride Photos From Tina Ketchopolos

Joey:  Here are some photos from Reid’s Ride in memory of Reid Sacco that took place yesterday from Lynnfield ending at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester.

Reid’s parents Gene and Lorraine Sacco of Lynnfield began this event in memory of their son Reid R. Sacco.  They are an incredible parents with lots of support from wonderful family members and friends.

The ride is a 28-mile Bike-a-thon , a fun and rewarding way to support clinical and scientific research into finding more  treatments — and someday a cure — for the cancers that predominantly strike adolescents and young adults. Cyclists of all ages and abilities pedal their way from Lynnfield to Cape Ann in what is the primary fund-raising event for the Reid Sacco Memorial Foundation.  The event registration fees, sponsorships and donations benefit the Reid Sacco Memorial Cancer Research Fund, and this fund supports clinical and research programs in the area of young adult cancers. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the outlook for this population of cancer patients, a population that has been tragically underserved by recent advances in cancer treatment.

Sacco was born July 24, 1984, which is intentionally close to the ride date. Sacco’s goal was to ride in a bike-a-thon to prevent young adult cancer, but cancer took his life before he achieved that desire. He died June 16, 2005 at the age of 20.   Reid was enrolled at Columbia University to study Chemical Engineering

In late June 2012, the Reid R. Sacco AYA Program at Tufts Medical Center was announced – the program includes the establishment this summer of the Reid R. Sacco Adolescent & Young Adults Clinic for Cancer and Blood Diseases, as well as the establishment of the Reid R. Sacco AYA Fund to support educational initiatives at Tufts.   This extraordinary achievement was made possible by your participation in Reid’s Ride over the years.

This year’s Reid Rice raised over $100,000. with donations still coming in!

Hey Joey-

Gloucester’s ‘sister city’ is Tamano, Japan. July 16 is a Holiday in Japan- Marine Day (Umi no hi) Japan’s newest holiday; only became a nationally recognized holiday in Japan in 1996. Marine Memorial Day was established in 1941 to mark the anniversary of the 1876 return of the Meiji Emperor to the Port of Yokohama, on the two-masted topsail schooner Meiji-Maru, from a tour of the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions This holiday was established to express gratitude for the gifts of the sea, honor its importance, and pray for the prosperity of Japan as a maritime nation.

In celebration of Marine Day, in Japan all the national aquariums organize special events, water sports competitions, water shows, and cultural activities relating to the sea take place. Many people celebrate with a day at the beach.

Gloucester is a Maritime City- with its fishing industry, the Maritime Museum and Dory Shop, elegant double-masted schooners (the Adventure, Ardele, and Lannon,) rowing competitions (Blackburn Challenge, dory and seine boat races.) festivals (St. Peter’s, Waterfront, Schooner) delicious fresh seafood served at Gloucester’s many fine restaurants, beautiful beaches and much, much more, we are truly blessed! Here we have many ways to enjoy our ‘Gifts from the Sea.’ Think Globally, Act Locally- Today may we express gratitude for these gifts, honor their importance, and pray for the prosperity of all! Take Time Today to Reflect Upon and Enjoy All the Wonders of Gloucester and the Sea! Viva Glosta!

Thank you Joey! Congrats on Chronicle! Thank you for all you do for Gloucester!   Karen
