For years, we found his byline under the headline of every major fishery article that we read at the Gloucester Daily Times. It told us to read on for the truth and an unbiased perspective that a great journalist presents regarding our livelihoods.Richard’s articles provided the information to the public of the complexities that made up the convoluted issues surrounding the stories of the New England ground fishery — something that was just about impossible. continued@http://fisherynation.com/archives/10071

CATA’s new website helps you get around Cape Ann on your phone

No, you can’t use your phone as a magic carpet to whisk you to and fro — not yet, anyhow. But you can use it to see CATA Bus & Trolley schedules. You can also get real-time transit directions from wherever you are (assuming you have the phone’s GPS feature turned on) and you can call 978-290-5875, follow instructions and get a text telling you when and where to get the next available bus closest to you. If you see tourists, be sure to tell them about this — and don’t forget to mention that they can park at Stage Fort Park for FREE and take the Trolley Shuttle to downtown, Rocky Neck and the beaches (see schedule here). Let’s keep their cars off our roads.
So, does CATA have a new app? Nope. It’s better than an app. It’s CATA’s new website built using Responsive Web Design (RWD for short).
Websites that use RWD automatically reconfigure their display depending on what device you’re using. One reason RWD websites are better than apps is that you can see the ENTIRE WEBSITE on your phone — and it’s optimized for your particular phone’s display based on how you’re holding the phone when you click on the website.
Here’s an example: The picture above shows what CATA’s new Routes & Schedules page looks like on an iPhone held portrait (taller than it is wide). Below is the same page on an iPad held portrait. Click here to see the same page on a computer (but only if you’re on a computer.)

The top third of this image is what you see on a Droid phone held landscape (sideways). And when you turn a smart-phone or tablet from portrait to landscape, the website’s design automatically adjusts to the new aspect ratio.
Again, the best thing about RWD is that regardless of the device you use, iPhone, Droid phone, iPad, any other tablet or any computer, you’re getting the complete website — all the info. And when schedules change, CATA only has to change them in one place and all devices will see the new info automatically. That’s why Google recommends developing smartphone-optimized websites using RWD (see their recommendations here.)
Pretty spiffy, huh. WARNING – SHAMELESS PLUG: Vickie and I built CATA’s new website. That’s what we do when we’re not presenting concerts and keeping gimmesound’s live music listings up to date.

Foo Foo is here! Daisy Nell’s new children’s book, Captain Stan’s Foo Foo Band, is now available and ready for children of all ages
Foo Foo is here! Daisy Nell’s new children’s book, Captain Stan’s Foo Foo Band, is now available and ready for children of all ages. Inside of each book there is a music CD of the Foo Foo song, plus a link to a video of a square dance written by Nell for the Foo Foo crew. The story is, like all of Daisy Nell’s stories, is partly based on genuine local lore coupled with an imaginary scenario. In this, her third book, Captain Stan is looking forward to a musical evening with his mates onboard his schooner when several mishaps cause him to nearly miss his own party. Based on the Gloucester Harbor of today, the term “foo foo” is from the old days of wooden whaling ships when crew from ports around the world worked together, and often played music when it was time to have a little fun. The French word “fou”, meaning foolish, was soon adapted to become “foo foo”, to indicate a band of musicians who would pull together instruments that were fashioned out of whatever was on hand on the ship, plus some real fiddles, banjos or mandolins. In the story Captain Stan likes to use the old term foo foo band, but more than that, he liked to just get together with his crew and play foo foo, belting out the old tunes and dances.
With charming illustrations by George Ulrich of Marblehead, MA, the foo foo band comes to life. Daisy Nell, herself a musician and maritime folklorist, has crafted the characters in this book from the real members of her band Crabgrass. Those who know Captain Stan and Daisy Nell and their real-life band mates will delight in the way Ulrich has captured their antics. Geoff Kaufman, Director of the Mystic Sea Music Festival, Mystic, CT, says, “What a delightful story Daisy Nell hath wrought! Such fun, and so much to learn along the way.” From Gordon Bok, folk artist and author from Camden, ME: “Daisy Nell is encouraging a worthy tradition.” Daisy describes this new book as a celebration of a life surrounded by wonderful musicians here on Cape Ann, and hopes it will inspire children of all ages to find the joy in music.
There will be a reading of Captain Stan’s Foo Foo Band at the Book Store of Gloucester, 61 Main St, on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 7 PM. Books are for sale at The Book Store and Maritime Gloucester, and at Toad Hall in Rockport, Sea Meadow gifts in Essex, and Russell Orchards, Ipswich.
Gorgeous Cecropia Moth
Christine Morey from Annabelle’s Pet Care sent this photo of a newly emerged Cecropia Moth. This is the second year in a row that she has found a Cecropia Moth cocoon on her hydrangea bush. The hydrangea is sited below her birch tree, which is one of the caterpillar’s food plant. The Cecropia Moth is the largest North American native moth, with a wing span of six inches! Gorgeous Christine–thank you so much for sharing!!!

What to look for in your garden ~
Nice Note from Al Bezanson
Tuesday night while setting up my projector at the Southborough Library for my pollinator garden lecture for the Southborough Open Land Foundation I needed a shim to balance the projector. To my surprise and delight, the gentleman sitting next to the projector handed me a GMG coaster from his pocket! He was none other than GMG’s Al Bezanson, there at the lecture, with his lovely wife Phyllis. Joey teases me so much about butterflies we thought he would get a laugh out of seeing a photo of the schooner expert at my lecture. Many thanks Al and Phyllis for coming and it was so great to meet you both!
Hi Kim
Thanks for coming. Your talk was outstanding, and you had me enthralled with your knowledge of our natural surroundings. It is always a treat to read your GMG comments on others’ sightings. From now on I will be taking a much closer look at the details in Phyllis’ gardens. I know something about birds but I am a butterfly novice.
Gloucester is one hour from Southborough if you hit it right. Sorry you experienced the traffic nightmare. That’s one reason Phyllis and I will be back on Rocky Neck this summer. Fifty years ago we lived at 4 Wonson Street with a Tomato Hornworm the size of a small cucumber.
All the best,
Al and Phyllis Bezanson

Andrew is Leaving Cape Ann TV
Andrew Love has been hired away by a neighboring TV station. I am so happy for Andrew’s new job opportunity but think I speak for the entire community when I say we are so sorry to see him leave CATV. Andrew will be sorely, sorely missed by all.
Andrew will continue to live on Cape Ann, and remains available to hire as a freelance producer, videographer, editor, director–Andrew’s skills are many–and as I said before, Andrew is a genius! Seriously!
The following is a short film Andrew made for the company videoimpacts. It is a story that highlights the dangers of texting and driving. Beautiful work and great job Andrew!

Stage Fort Park facilities include a number of grills. Entertainment includes live music by Happy Accidents and the popular Seafood Throwdown.
Vendors:
The 2013 Cape Ann Farmer’s Market will host more vendors than ever, 75 over the season, with 50 at any given market, making the market one of the largest in Massachusetts. Vendors are held to high standards, conforming to statewide farmer’s market guidelines and are all local. Along with an extensive array of fresh farm produce through-out the season, vendors will be selling baked goods, including gluten-free goodies and Lebanese flat bread, potted plants, herbs, gelato, fresh pasta, fish from Fisherman’s Wharf Seafood, local wines, roasted nuts, homemade cheese, and small-batch condiments. Back Yard Growers will be selling produce, eggs, and cut flowers. Prepared food for taking home or dining at the park include guacamole made on-site, tacos, burritos, lobster and crab rolls, grilled chicken and pulled pork, fresh homemade pizza, and savory and sweet tarts. Craft tents will offer organic soap, hand-made jewelry, pottery, hand-printed clothing, and art made from recycled materials. A complete list of vendors and weekly schedules may be found on www.capeannfarmersmarket.org.
The Farmers Market is at Stage Fort Park, overlooking beautiful Gloucester Harbor, through the courtesy of the City of Gloucester. Parking fees will be suspended during market hours, so plentiful free and ample parking will be available to shoppers. A CATA bus will run from the Rose Baker Center on Rogers Street to Stage Fort Park by reservation.
The Cape Ann Farmers Market is an independent non-profit, mission-based organization, started by and for the community of Cape Ann. It is funded by vendor fees, memberships, donations and grants. Cape Ann Farmers Market sponsors a used cookbook and garden book table, and will be selling tote bags, aprons, t-shirts and memberships, which include discounts at local restaurants and specialty stores every week to help offset the costs of running the market.
The Cape Ann Farmers Market accepts WIC coupons, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons, and SNAP/EBT, expanding its mission to bring healthy food to the entire community.
Other: The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market includes a wellness tent where shoppers can relax with a therapeutic massage, and an education tent where local non-profits promote their organizations and services. Children’s activities are organized by Art Haven every week at 4:15 under the children’s tent. Stage Fort Park has a playground to entertain children while parents shop, and grills are available so families can stay for a picnic dinner or a concert at the bandshell.
Talent: Instead of piped-in supermarket Muzak, area musicians provide an original background soundtrack for shopping. Performances are during market hours, from 3:30 to 6:30, and feature sea shanties, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and world music over the course of the summer.
Incredible Wedding at Willowdale Estate
I have shared many photos and stories about the garden and events that take place at Willowdale Estate. Not only because I love working with everyone there, but also because several people who live in Gloucester work at Willowdale (Michele and Audi) and because everyone in the Willowdale offices reads GMG on a daily basis. The following glowing review was recently published in The Knot and I thought perhaps prospective brides looking for a venue would like to read about one bride’s beautiful experience at Willowdale.
Incredible Wedding!
