You may or may not know that major rock stars live right down the road in Beverly, MA.  CASPIAN, performed at Beverly’s Block Party last year, but mostly they tour the world.  On October 18, they’re celebrating their 10th year as a band with a special hometown anniversary concert at The Larcom Theatre.  Yesterday at noon, they offered pre-sale tickets to their fan-base, who turn out to be highly loyal — meaning the show is nearly sold out barely 24 hours later (most of the orchestra was sold out within an hour).  That’s what I mean when I say, “rock stars.”  So if you want to go to this once-in-a-decade event, get balcony seats now (right here).
I can’t even explain how awesome BossJock is for recording, editing and exporting podcast files. I paid $10 for it. It was the most expensive app I’ve ever bought and truth be told after having used it and seeing just how incredibly useful it is I would pay five times that amount if I had to replace it because it’s that good. It is for Apple iOS devices.
Right now it’s on sale for half off in the iTunes store. That’s $4.99 and that my friends is a steal if you are doing any type of podcasting.

For GLOUCESTER, MA there’s a mash up poster for the entire Art Everywhere exhibit, rather than a single image. You can see it at 551-553 Washington Street Gloucester. Look for Homer’s Breezing Up on the 93 expressway by Dorchester.
The Fitz Hugh Lane’s Boston Harbor is in two locations, one near Westborough, the other one along 495 near Wrentham/Plainview/Foxbourough.
Salem State College has the Hassam. Boston is the location of the Heade Giant Magnolias.

As long as there have been records kept, there have been stories of the sea. Some of the stories have been good and are filled with happiness, others have shown the hard life that the men on the front lines of the fishing industry have and some are so heartbreaking if a man is lost at sea.
Growing up in Gloucester meant fishing and salt water was injected in your blood at birth. Some kids were born with a rod and reel, some were born with trawling nets, others with traps or deep sea rigs. It didn’t matter, you simply knew how to do it. You knew the difference between a jig and a #8 hook and what fish liked clams as bait or sea worms.
You skippered boats with names that were created with an industry in mind, such as a dentist naming a boat “The Impaction. They were named for a mother or father or a nautical term such as Gale Force. Some even had names that were comical such as “Hekawi” as in the tribe in the 60’s sitcom “F-Troop”. It didn’t matter what the name was, because it was yours.
You knew how to pilot any size boat, from an Amesbury skiff, to a Boston Whaler and an Albin cabin cruiser. You knew how to chum the waters and gahf the big one. NYC clam chowda is blasphemy to you, as is Red Lobster and any Lobsta Roll south west of Lobsta Land. It will never be a question of “To fish or not to fish”, but rather “how am I gonna cook it tonight? You have saved many fish from the hazard of drowning in the ocean.
A snow storm that only drops 6” is considered a dusting. If it’s sunny and above 40 degrees, you are in shorts. 60+ degrees is a beach day, and a rain storm means you can have a great day fishing. You hate people that think a 50″+ swell is Hollywood magic, because you may have lived through one. Pneumonia may sideline you, but sea sickness will never. You can hold a beer in one hand and hot dog in the other while doing 30 knots.
You mourned the losses and celebrated victories. It didn’t matter what your background was, you did it all together at Our Lady of Good Voyage. You were there when Cardinals Cushing, Mediros and Law blessed the fleet during every fiesta.
You have played the air guitar at “Old Timers”. You have drank Sambucca, and you are 100% Italian or Sicilian during the last full weekend in June. “Viva San Pietro” rolls off your tongue with ease at the same time.
You are all Gloucestermen, no matter where you settled and what you did, because like riding a bike, you will always remember being a Gloucesterman.

Just Announced: James Montgomery’s Celebrate Gloucester Guests
James has invited young rising stars Danielle Miraglia & Marissa Licata along with Gloucester’s own Willie Loco Alexander to join him on stage Friday night August 22 at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion to help raise money for the Open Door.
This is James’ first appearance in Gloucester on over 2 years and he won’t be back for a while — and you can’t see him with this lineup anywhere else. Â So get tickets now (right here)Â before it’s too late.

Due to a scheduling conflict, we have moved the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit Concert featuring John Sebastian to Saturday, September 13 at the UU Meetinghouse.  Get tickets here.
This is one more example of how things often work out despite my frustration when I found out about the conflict.  The UU Meetinghouse a fitting venue given that this concert helps raise money for its restoration and the acoustics are excellent.  But with no air conditioning, it wouldn’t have worked for an August concert.  However, it’s perfect for September when the average high is 72 and low is 55 (it might be a little chilly at 8pm on the water that time of year) and the cushioned pews are quite comfortable.
This concert is a perfect opportunity to experience the music that helped define a generation up close and personal.  Here’s a video of John Sebastian at Woodstock (45 years ago this August):

The show takes an in-depth look at the Cape Ann ecosystem, highlighting the people and businesses that rely on the ocean for survival. The premiere episode features the lifecycle of the clam. Shep Means, a clammer from Essex and Gloucester hosts the show. Join Shep as he goes digging on the clam flats and the beach, stops by Essex Shellfish to weigh them up, then visits Intershell to see them shucked and packaged, and finally to Woodman’s to fry them and eat them.
