Every October, the Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester hosts a large block of documentary films, called DoctoberFest. This year’s 6th Annual line-up, which runs fromOctober 1–14, features 21 great films focusing on a variety of topics, with 6 filmmaker events. Live Art Auction October 1st at the Sawyer Free Library! Preview Party at 6:00pm
Wednesday evening at 7 PM on the main floor of the Sawyer Free Library, 70 pieces of local art will be up for bid during the Annual Sawyer Free Library Art Auction. The auction has been a major library event for nearly 20 years, supporting programming, student art scholarships, and museum passes as well as art book, periodicals and DVD purchases.
The evening begins at 6 PM with a preview reception on the main floor, followed by the live auction at 7PM. Once again Jack Good, current President of the Essex National Heritage Commission, will be the auctioneer. Many generous local artists donate each year to this festive event. Just a few of the 70 artists represented include David Curtis, Jeff Weaver, Paul Frontiero, Don Gorvette, Ray Crane, Peter Tysver, Bob Blue, Theresa Wonson, Margaret Laurie, Mary Rhinelander, Susie Field, Fred Kepler, Brenda Malloy, Coco Berkman, Bob Blue, Paul George, Sinikka Nogelo and Kate Nordstrom, Allen Sloane.
Featured this year is a painting by the late Margaret Laurie donated by her daughter Jeannine Lynch; a painting donated by the widow of the late Bob Blue and a seascape painting by the late Paul Frontiero donated by his son Paul Frontiero Jr.
The auction is a win-win for all. It’s an opportunity to support local artists, purchase quality art at affordable prices, and support the interests of the community and its library.

In 2014 Lester Young will have been gone 55 years, yet this swinging star shines brightly in the film-in-progress. In the film, Sonny Rollins calls Lester “god”, and a god he was for many players who paid their dues at mid-Century. The four-minute trailer includes interviews with Sonny Rollins, Harry Belafonte, Wayne Shorter, B.B. King, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, George Wein, David Amram, Amiri Baraka, Junior Mance, and Gunther Schuller. Collecting these interviews has been an ongoing process for about two years. Here are some pictures from the two-year journey that resulted in this trailer.
As a longtime documentary veteran, my approach uses contemporary places combined with archival film, interviews and music to evoke our shared history. In President of Beauty: The Life and Times of Lester Young, the music and America’s troubled social history combine to evoke a sense of this much-misunderstood American genius.

Cape Ann TV is airing “Israel Horovitz’s ‘My Old Lady’ Red Carpet Special” tonight on Channel 12 at 9 pm. Join the talented and glamorous Heidi Dallin as she interviews Cape Ann’s A-List who attended last weeks’s advanced screening of “My Old Lady” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The movie is directed by Gloucester Stage Company founder Israel Horovitz and stars Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith. The screening was a benefit for the Gloucester Stage Company.
It is one big party on the red carpet, as Heidi talks to a sea of one name personalities from Cape Ann: Carolyn, Bruce, Ann-Margaret, and Sinikka, just to name a few. She also talks to Gail McCarthy and Desi Smith of the Gloucester Daily Times and Mark Shanahan from the Boston Globe’s ‘Names & Faces’. The program ends with Israel’s introduction to the movie. He talks about what it is like to make a film in Paris, and working with Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline.

Will we be the last generation to enjoy cod in New England?
Since Colonial times, the Sacred Cod hanging in the Massachusetts Statehouse has been a “historic and continuing symbol of the commonwealth.” This regional mascot reminds us that New England was built on a foundation of fish.
Without drastic intervention to save the cod (and the habitat they need to thrive) our grandchildren might know the cod only as the wooden sculpture — and a testament to our greed and shortsightedness.
This summer, NOAA Fisheries released some shocking new data.
It appears that cod in the Gulf of Maine have declined to just 3 percent of what is needed for a healthy population (down from an already dismal 15 percent in 2011).
Worse yet, scientists found fewer juveniles, which means reproduction rates are crashing. Atlantic cod is headed toward “commercial extinction” in New England waters, as happened in Canada in the 1990s.
The decline of cod is the result of bad decisions by federal fisheries managers (under pressure from powerful fishing interests) that encouraged overfishing for decades and failed to protect the habitat cod need to thrive.
In 2012, the New England Fisheries Management Council recommended a significant quota cut for cod in a last-ditch effort to save the species.
This was met with outrage by the old-school groundfish industry. NOAA Fisheries, the federal agency who makes the final management decisions, tried to soften the blow — taking actions which were recently found illegal by a federal court.
The new science shows that even the 2012 catch reductions were too small to protect the remaining cod stock. More needs to be done.
Despite the scientific evidence, expect the dominant players in the fishery to launch a new-old campaign of outrage against the measures needed to save, and rebuild cod stocks. Their campaign will include familiar messages.
First, they will claim NOAA’s Science Center got the science wrong and that there are far more cod in the ocean than estimated — despite the fact fishermen have been unable to catch even the declining cod quotas in recent years.
They will try to blame other causes for the population decline, like ravenous hoards of seals and dogfish, and climate change, while not acknowledging the severe overfishing that took place for decades.
The industry will also call for more “flexibility” in the regulations that are needed to prevent overfishing and protect the habitat cod need to recover.
Finally, expect a request for more government money to bail them out. This year, U.S. taxpayers gave the New England groundfish industry $33 million.

Bank Gloucester’s Banking For The Community program is bigger than ever this year. You get to vote ON-LINE (right here) for an organization to to win up to $5K! Now, there are some excellent organizations on the list, but you can also check a box labeled “Other” and write one in yourself. That’s what I did. I voted for the Harbor Loop Concerts. “Why?” Well, for a number of reasons this 30-year-old tradition almost fizzled this summer. But due to the tireless efforts of organizer Bradley Royds, with a little help from Mayor Kirk and others at City Hall, they pulled it off — barely — and it was a wonderful summer of free music at Harbor Loop enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors. I’d like to see this concert series secure for next year and what better way than by awarding it the top Bank Gloucester prize.
