Portraits from the Boston Marathon: 2013

I heard the bombs explode from  two blocks away as I was taking portraits of runners after they finished the marathon.  The tone of my images quickly changed as I documented the reactions of the athletes and the spectators.

The Coolest Thing You’ll See on The Web Today- Global Shark tracker

image

@AndreaWBZ shared this tweet from @OCEARCH today-

Shark Katherine (data below) set off a ping this morning just off Nantucket this morning at 4:42AM. You can see the path of Shark Katherine’s travels up and down the Atlantic Coast and In the Gulf of Mexico from the pings she sends out every time she breaks the surface of the ocean.  not only do they have real time data on the latest shark pings, they have videos from when the individual sharks are tagged.  The whole thing is about as cool a use of the internet as I’ve seen.  Check it out here

Should we bring Booker T. Jones to the Larcom?

We’re about to book lots of new shows down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre and one of the people we’re seriously considering is Book T. Jones who wrote “Born Under a Bad Sign” with William Bell, recorded in 1967 by Albert King and later by Cream.  Here’s Booker T’s powerful version with his excellent touring band!  Leave a comment or Click here and tell us whether or not you think we should bring these guys to the Larcom this winter.

Concert Tickets make Great Gifts — easy as 1-2-3 — Buy-Print-Under the tree

Oh, I just couldn’t resist that terribly corny rhyme …

Before I head downtown (Gloucester, that is) to (hopefully) finish up my shopping, I figured I’d remind all of you, who might be stressing about what to buy, how easy it is to raise your loved ones’ spirits with the gift of music.  Of course there are many excellent choices this year, but I’ll take this opportunity make a shameless plug for just 1: John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band right down the road at Beverly’ Larcom Theatre on Jan 31.  It’s really easy:

1) Buy your tickets here.
2) Print them out.
3) Fold, wrap in a bow and put under the tree (or where ever you like).

Here are some reasons why this is a good idea: It’s local.  Fun.  Don’t have to go to the mall.  Don’t even have to get dressed to buy them.  Gives you and your loved ones a treat in the dead of winter.  Gives you something to look forward to.  Doesn’t take up any space.  Music heals your soul.

The Funniest Thing You’ll Read Today Is The 2014 Hater’s Guide To The Williams-Sonoma Catalog

The 2014 Hater’s Guide To The Williams-Sonoma Catalog

From Deadspin and forwarded by Robin Jones (click the link above to check the whole thing out)

It starts-

It’s a difficult world out there, people. War, poverty, brutality, corruption, social and racial injustice … these are not civil times we live in. Which is why, more than ever, we NEED the comfort and warmth that only life inside the Williams-Sonoma catalog can provide. Follow me, America. Follow me inside these glossy pages, where there is no anger. No violence. No internet commenters explaining why YOUR SO STOOPID.

In here, there is nothing but endless kitchen countertops, and meticulously arranged buffet spreads with pre-made bundt cakes (prep it a day early, and your party is a snap!) that have been drizzled just so with triple-butterscotch icing. There are fancy chocolates enrobed in other fancy chocolates. There are WHIMSICAL TINS (yes, the copy actually says that). There are thousands of newfangled cooking tools and gadgets and devices that only a Greenwich, Conn., kitchen could possibly have space to accommodate. There are dustings and sprinklings and twee little bows, all perfectly arranged for your perfect little evening of perfect holiday entertaining with your perfect neighbor guests and your perfect children standing by the table in their john-johns and singing gaily to you all as you pipe fresh, warm cognac into each other’s butts.

Really, click the link to see the whole post on Deadspin, it’s good stuff. Just in case you’re not sure where to click- see the highlighted text after the word “word”, click there. word The 2014 Hater’s Guide To The Williams-Sonoma Catalog

Beautiful, Beautiful Lynn Swigart Photos of Gloucester and Other Favorites at Trident Gallery

Don’t miss Lynn Swigart’s show of stunning photographs, many from Gloucester, along with other favorites, currently on display at the Trident Gallery through January 4th.

Trident Gallery will be open late and serving refreshments on Thursday night, the 18th, for Men’s Night, which also coincides with the opening of Pinoli. You can check out the Lobster Trap Tree next door to Trident, see Lynn’s photos, shop local, and have dinner at Pinoli (or any of the other fabulous dining establishments on Main Street). Sounds like a wonderfully fun night out to me!

HenriCDCoverTonight at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre, Gloucester’s Henri Smith releases his first CD in a decade (recorded live at the Larcom in March) with a concert celebration that will, of course, include dancing a traditional New Orleans Second Line parade in the aisles.

Vickie and I produced the CD and Vickie designed the CD case and disc.

This will be your last chance to get your CD signed by Henri and the band before the holidays.  Very good seats still available in the balcony (here) and a few good seats also left in the orchestra (here).
