Duality is a theme that repeatedly makes its way into my work. Having spent my childhood in Taiwan, I am strongly influenced by my dual Chinese and Japanese heritage. Coming to America, I found my deeply held beliefs being constantly re-evaluated, challenged, and sometimes compromised. My work is a medium for me to revisit and gain new understanding from my immigration experience. My creativity is fueled by direct observation. My work is driven by the fascination with perceptual and visual experience of light and space. I am constantly seeking new ways to create an illusionistic space through an exploration of of lines, shapes, color and through the visceral act of painting, scraping and collaging materials. I draw upon images of the people, objects, and places that I observe and identify with on a personal level. These images and ideas are given substance and transformed through my painting and printmaking practices. I’ve received a BFA in Painting from University of Washington and MFA Painting degree from Boston University.
Simply Looking, Looking Simple: oil paintings
by Claudia Kaufman
Last Day, Tuesday, July 19
Claudia Kaufman
Contemporary realist painter Claudia Kaufman’s "Simply Looking: Looking Simple," the third in the Rocky Neck Gallery Summer Artist Series, opens Wednesday, July 6 and runs until Tuesday, July 19. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, July 9, from 5-8 p.m. Kaufman will give a talk at about 7pm where she will show slides that show the steps involved in creating an acurately realistic painting. The public is invited.
Kaufman lives in Marblehead and is a member of the North Shore, Rockport, and Marblehead Art Associations and the Copley Society of Art. Her work has been shown in many Boston area exhibitions. She worked as a commercial artist in New York City followed by a career as marketing executive/creative director of a national healthcare technology company.
She studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston, Mass College of Art and most recently completed a post baccalaureate residency program in painting at Brandeis University.
As a contemporary realist painter, my works are studies in observation — still lifes of familiar objects that are deceptively simple, yet complex. In the studio setting, I challenge myself to translate the perceived three-dimensional world to a 2D field by observing and capturing the conditions of light, form, color and space through the painterly properties of oil paint. Stopping short of photo-realism, I work to keep the signs of my hand and brushstroke in my work and am particularly intrigued by the drama of light, transparency, reflection and shadows.

Annis Squam, 1817
Edmund March Blunt (1770–1862) published and printed the first book of sailing directions in the United States, the American Coast Pilot, in 1796. This Annis Squam chart is from the 9th edition of Coast Pilot and measures 9×5 inches – a tidy size for both large commercial and smaller sailing vessels. At the top in red are what I believe to be fish drying racks. Below Annis Squam, the chart shows the “White Sand Hills” of Coffin’s Beach. I’m excited to have this restored and superbly colored treasure in my gallery.
“The American Coast Pilot, containing the courses and distances between the principal harbours, capes and headlands, from Passamaquoddy through the gulph of Florida, with directions for sailing into the same, describing the soundings, bearings of the light-houses and beacons from the rocks, shoals, ledges, through the south and east channels, and the settings of the currents, with the latitudes of the principal harbours on the coast, together with a tide table, by Edmund M. Blunt; corrected and improved by the most experienced pilots in the United States.” – Edmund Blunt

Art exhibited July 15-30 • Art reception Friday, July 15 6:30-8:30pm • Madfish Gallery 5 • 77 Rocky Neck Ave • Gloucester, MA
Gloucester, MA: From July 15-30 Madfish Art Galleries is please to present Jamais vu, an exhibition of art by Stéphanie Williams. Held in Madfish Gallery number 5, there will be an informal reception with treats and wine this Friday, July 15 from 6:30-8:30pm (before the Prince tribute band, Lovesexxy live at the Madfish). The reception will be a chance to meet the artist, mingle with art lovers at all of the local galleries, and enjoy a reading by Margaret Young, a poet from Beverly, MA.
Born in France, a teacher, designer, beekeeper, and an emerging artist, Stéphanie Williams (currently living in Beverly) fell in love with the Cape Ann area over a decade ago. She is pleased to be showing her work in the famed Rocky Neck Art Colony.
The works on display represent Williams extensive travels, where she is never without her sketchbook. These humble journals hold some of her fondest memories and the watercolors displayed are samples of such vagabondages. As for her new paintings, she uses the wax of her own bees, oil paint and graphite, penciling, brushing, wiping, and carving. None of the work exhibited has been shown before and represents a new direction for Williams just as her new life as a mother.
This past May, Margaret Young’s second collection of poetry, Almond Town, was published by Bright Hill Press. She teaches creative writing at Endicott College and lives in Beverly.
Also on display will be pottery by Williams’ friend, Lyn Black, a potter originally from South Africa. Black “is grateful for all that has influenced her, and eager to experience and share more through her life and art.”
“Art, Rocks!” Better Late Than Never! Rockport 09/04/2010
“Art, Rocks!”
Better Late Than Never!
I received an email a few weeks ago from a 10 year old boy who when he was nine years old at the time he found one of my “Art,Rocks!” a Rock that I left at T-Wharf in Rockport on 09/04/2010. I think that was about 9 months ago. I remember leaving it there after having a cup of coffee and watching the Lobstermen get ready for their day. About 5am. I always wonder about the ones I leave that don’t get reported back to the email I leave on them. Currently the last three that I’ve left in the past two weeks that I never gave notice on GMG Have not been reported back. Which is fine. In this world we live in now, maybe people think there is a catch too this thing. Maybe they think I want money for it. Emails like Coopers who found it is payment enough! I will never ask anything for them. An email would be nice but, If I don’t get a response that’s fine too! Mystery and fantasy is what makes life! isn’t it?
Here’s the email from Cooper and Photos of the “Art, Rock!” He found! Who could ask for anything more?!!!! Thanks Cooper!
Am I a little weird? Maybe! 🙂
from Cooper;
Dear mr or mrs frontiero. I picked up one of your pictures of the motif in a parking lot in rockport on 9-4-2010. I am very sorry not to get back to you sooner. I am a 10 year old boy and I’m in fourth grade at st johns in Beverly Massachusetts . I picked it up when i was nine with my aunt and little sister delaney who is now 6. That is my lucky rock because that day I won a contest at bearskin neck country store. You are a beautiful artist. Sincerely , Cooper

Rockport Bonfire: Before and After
Rubber Duck took her kids to the bonfire the day before:

And Les Bartlett posted this unbelievable next morning shot on his website:
Be sure to click through the photo to go to Les’s “Follow The Gleam” website and see the larger slideshow of the morning after the bonfire as well as his amazing series on granite and quarries. In the embers slideshow, third photo in, may be the elusive green flash. The heat from a bonfire might assist the presence of a green flash.
Try and line up the sun, the breakwater, the boat, the embers, oh, and cue perfect sunrise. It is shots like this that make you just roll over and go back to sleep and let someone who knows what they are doing take the shot.
By the way, has anyone seen Rubber Duck? Haven’t seen her since the bonfire. I hope she isn’t a little rubber puddle down at Back Beach.
Good Harbor Beach, 1930
As summer takes hold and hot weather becomes the norm, I think of this photograph, taken at the Brier Neck end of Good Harbor Beach. It looks hazy, hot, and humid. Details of the Back Shore and Moorland Hotel are lost in the haze. Beach goers seek out the water and hide in the shade. The number of umbrellas makes me think they knew about the effects of too much sun.
