Don’t Be A Negligent Parent! Get Your Kids Down To Art Haven Today or Saturday To Paint A Buoy For The Lobster Trap Tree

The lobster trap tree is up once again and it needs to be decorated! Art Haven is once again offering a free day of buoy painting on December 10th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Children and teens of all ages are welcome to visit the 180B Main Street studio space in Gloucester to create their own original painted buoy ornament for this year’s community tree. The tree will then be lit with all of its festive décor at 5:00pm on Saturday as a culmination of the Middle Street Walk events happening all day.

Also for the fourth year, everyone is welcome to participate in creating a giant ice sculpture in front of Art Haven from 10:00am – 12:00pm on Saturday the 10th. All of these activities are made possible by generous donations from Cape Pond Ice, Ben’s Paint, Winchester Fishing and Rose’s Marine.

“We are so thankful to have been able to start a new holiday tradition for the community,” says Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow. “It’s great to see the kids faces as the lights go on around their beautiful buoy creations on the tree! Things like that start teaching them at a young age what it means to be a part of the Cape Ann community.”

The day is becoming even more of a community effort this year, as Project Uplift will also have a presence at the tree lighting and buoy painting day. Santa will be collecting toys, clothes and gift cards for Action Inc.’s Project Uplift program throughout the day and tree lighting, so you can bring a toy to help out another family this holiday season. In addition, the winner of this year’s downtown shopping spree will also be drawn at this year’s tree lighting ceremony.

In addition to this annual event, Art Haven is offering a series of afterschool workshops over the next two weeks in a variety of things, including wreath and ornament making, a clay day, jewelry making, and other Christmas present friendly creative projects. All of these classes run from 3:30-5:00pm.

“Workshops are a great way for us to try out fun and different things,” says Gadow. “And this time of year, it’s also a great way to finish up their Christmas list with a handcrafted present.”

There are small class fees charged for these workshops, but financial assistance is available if needed. For more information visit www.arthaven.org, call Art Haven at (978) 283-3888 or email arthaveninfo@gmail.com.

New Work at the Quinn Gallery

A few days ago I posted about my visit to Eugene Quinn’s gallery.  He’s having a reception this coming Saturday:

Art Stuff

Laureen Writes-

Hi Joey, hope you are doing well…and don’t know how you do all you do…but you are an inspiration to people like me…trying to promote myself…art and Beauty Bar. Here is a capture of a painting, "Out of Snacks," I had reproduced at the request/advice of EJ Kahn, during my show at Good Morning Gloucester Gallery this past July. Thank you again for the awesome, off the cuff, Scorsese-esque video. She said a lot of people were interested in buying this painting…but I had not yet reproduced it, and sold the original for $600. The newly reproduced gyclee is hanging at the Emerging Artists Show at the Annie and the last day of show is this coming Thursday…to coincide with men’s shopping night. The cost of the repro is $275 of which 25% goes to the Annie…for so many great causes. I think it would make a nice gift for people who spent time at Good Harbor Beach…and who maybe even just Summer here…and miss the beach.

Christmas Concert and The Cradle Song

Today at 2:00PM, Holy Family Parish will be having a Christmas Concert at St. Ann’s Church. All are welcome!

The other day I went to see “The Cradle Song”, a play presented by the Cape Ann community theatre group,  Theatre in the Pines.  The players did a great job! It’s worth seeing – you can still catch the Sunday, December 4th, 3:00PM production (if you are not at the Holy Family Christmas Concert) at Spiran Hall, Rockport.  Here are a few snapshots from the Friday performance.

Art at the Annie

If you haven’t made it over to the Annie yet to see the art on display, you still have time!   The exhibit will be open Saturday, Dec. 3, 3PM-7PM, and Thursday Dec. 8, 5PM-9PM.

I stopped by today, and it was well worth it.  There is quite a collection of beautiful art available for purchase, and artists are on hand for friendly chats about their artwork.

When I first got to Gloucester a few months ago, it took me a while to find "the Annie", not knowing to look for the "Blackburn Tavern"...
One of the two rooms in the exhibit
Artist Kerry Mullan with her beautiful "pets". She also has other sculptures and paintings on display. And she's a musician too...
Alice Garder paints these colorful images of Gloucester - and shares my interest in origami too! (she is folding a crane in this photo...)
Marion Hall stands by her marvelous watercolors
There was also live music!

Stop by if you can! Maybe you can pick up a nice piece of authentic Cape Ann art as a Christmas present for a friend.

6 People Who Gained Amazing Skills from Brain Injuries

At the age of 35, New Jersey man Jon Sarkin started to hear ringing in his ear. This was the type of ringing that, it turns out, could only be explained by overgrown blood vessels that require freaking brain surgery to fix.

Sarkin got his noggin cut open to fix the blood vessel, but later suffered a stroke and actually had to have part of his brain removed. All in all, it was almost the worst possible outcome for the surgery aside from death.

Terry Weber writes-

Just wanted to let you know that the Finish Line Writers Group has been meeting for almost two months at the Gloucester Writers Center. We are all working on our own novels, memoirs or screenplays, yet still finding time to support each other’s projects. At each meeting we have readings and critique time, as well as an educational segment. I have to say we are becoming quite close, and each of us contributes ideas to the group to make it effective and worthwhile. May we all make it to the Finish Line!

Note GMG friend Lois McNulty ‘consulting’ with me. She must be writing a comedy, as I can’t seem to take what she’s saying seriously! 😉

Joey’s editorial:

There is something for everyone in our community, writers, painters, sport fishermen, sun bathers, museum goers, indie film aficionados, patrons of the arts, music lovers, musicians, bird watchers, kayakers, stand up paddleboarders, folks that love to eat, ect, ect ect.

YOU CAN FIND IT ALL HERE!  HOW BLESSED ARE WE???

Eugene J. Quinn Studio Gallery

The other day I went for a drive to get some photos of Christmas decorations at local shops.  I tried Rocky Neck, but everything was closed and dark, so I ended up at Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Most shops and galleries were closed, but some have very nice Christmas decorations (which I’ll share in another post).  I had the pleasant surprise of finding East Gloucester resident Eugene Quinn still in his studio with an “open” sign in the window.

Artist and East Gloucester resident Eugene J. Quinn Jr. - click on the photo to see it larger

We had a very nice conversation. Although he and I have never met, it turns out we have met some of the same people in the past because one of his paintings ended up at one of the places where I studied in the seminary.   His work is very beautiful:

He seemed to be just finishing this up when I arrived.

Stop by and visit the gallery! His work is worth seeing first-hand. His regular hours from now until Christmas will be 10AM-5PM (although he may be around off-hours at times). His gallery is at 54 Bearskin Neck Rd., Rockport, MA 01966.

Bill Hubbard Gloucester Paintings Now Online

Bill Hubbard has been chosen to have a showing of 14 of his paintings in the Main Gallery of Copperflame Galleries from December 1 through December 31st, 2011. Beginning on Dec. 1st. you may view his artwork at http://copperflame.com/maingallery-15.php. Six other artists will be showing their work in adjacent galleries at Copper Flame.
Hubbard shares Indian River Artiosts Studio with his wife and partner, Theresa A. Kraemer.  He specializes in marine art, seascapes and boats as well as fishing and fish.
He is a member of the Strawbridge Art League in Melbourne, Florida, where he lives. Hubbard studied in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with Margaret Taylor and Robert Benham. Anton Stetzko, the watercolorist, greatly stimulated his urge to create art while he was living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, from 2002 to 2006.
He is currently working in the mixed media of acrylic, pen and ink. He is from a fishing family, so his painting leans heavily toward seascapes, nautical and tall ship subjects. He paints realistic historical subjects like famous Gloucester fishing schooners, Maine trading schooners and Indian River wind and steam driven boats and ships. He looks at his marine paintings as telling a story – sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle..

"Field of Dreams" Community Story of Mattos Field

Patti Amaral writes-

Hello Joey, Here is a wonderful story about Mattos field and local artists I know you will love. Great community effort, thanks for all you do.   Patti Amaral Clean City Initiative

Mattos

Field of Dreams

The rock at the top of the hill states: This playground is dedicated to the memory of Joseph S. Mattos Jr. Born Oct. 4, 1899 and killed in action Oct. 5, 1918. Dedicated 1935.

During World War I, Joseph S. Mattos Jr. “died with honor in the service of his country”, just one day after his eighteenth birthday.  World War I officially ended just over a month later (11/11/1918)
Joseph S. Mattos Jr. was probably one of the youngest Gloucester men killed in action during WWI.
The area known as the Joseph Mattos Field or Playground was originally a low-lying natural basin with a brook running through it.  In the 1840s Nathaniel Webster Sr. dammed the brook creating a pond.  In the winter he cut the ice from the pond to supply the fishing fleet.  Around 1900 his son, Nathaniel Webster Jr., sold the business to Cape Pond Ice Co.  In 1924 Cape Pond Ice Co. sold the property to the city for a public recreation area. Ten years later the city built Veterans Memorial School, adjacent to the field.
For the past 30 years Mattos field has hosted The Cape Ann Women’s Softball League. This year the league started a campaign to raise money for new lights for the field that can cost up to $100,000. The CAWSL “Light up Mattos” field campaign has sponsored several local fundraisers to raise money for the lights.
Two years ago the women painted the bleachers with donations from the Building Center. After searching for a local artist to paint “Mattos Field” on the back of the freshly painted bleachers, in an attempt to brighten up the area, local artist Jason Burroughs stepped up and donated his time to paint the new “Mattos Field” mural. Jason and his friend Enza Dimaio spent last weekend painting the mural. Jason has been part of Cape Ann Art Havens Teen Artist Guild for over a year and a half now, which is led by Executive Director Mat Schetne. Jason has shown his work for the last two summers at the Farmers Market, and his most recent showing on October 1, 2011 called “Wet Paint”. He states,” in some ways my form of art is abstract but at the same time its got an urban feel to it, I pretty much have no boundaries to define my artwork”. Jason attended Veterans Memorial School and played at the field throughout his youth. “Painting the Mattos Field Mural meant a lot to me because when I went to Veterans Memorial School, I always remember the ugly bleachers in the corner of the field that we were not allowed to go near (because of their unkempt condition). I think painting the mural brightened up the bleachers and made it look a lot more inviting. I’m glad to say that I did something for my city.”

Enza Dimaio worked with Jason on the mural too. She is a local girl who played softball for the Raiders at Mattos field for many years. She doesn’t consider herself an artist, but when I saw her down the field helping Jason, I could tell she truly enjoys the work. Enza is happy to be giving back to the local field that she played on in her youth as well.

Two young local residents giving back to their community through what they love to do, Paint.

The Compass Rose-Custom Tattoos

Gloucester has a new tattoo shop on Main street-The Compass Rose.  Mike and I passed by today and we stopped to check them out.   The shop is at 35 Main street in a pretty sweet 2nd floor location. It’s clean, professional, with artwork covering the walls.  Mike decided to get a custom skull tattoo.

Matt Maguire owns the shop and also works as an artist along with  Jon Saulnier. We didn’t have a chance to meet Matt, but he sounds like a pretty cool guy and a great artist. Mike worked with Jon, describing the tattoo he wanted while Jon worked his magic designing the tattoo.

The finished tattoo:

Jon did such a great job on Mike’s tattoo. The design and colors are perfect.  I’ll be making an appointment for myself this week to get my rosa rugosa tattoo touched up.  The Compass Rose welcomes walk-ins as well as appointments for custom work. You can contact them and see their work at http://compassroseink.com.

A good review for the New Year.

Perfect Photo Suite 6

Wow! Lots of great tool updates with some new ones such as Perfect Portrait.

High Five Photo Tips for DECEMBER:

1. When shooting Portraits, alter you viewpoint and either get up higher and shoot down or lower and shoot up. Try direct eye contact and then have the subject look outside the field of the camera or inside the camera field. Try props or candid poses often during action such as with jumping or in an activity. Add light Painting (more on this technique for January)

light paining

senior 1 with heart senior 3

2. Lighting is the key to compositing. This will make the selections easier and the composite look real. The lighting on the subject and on the composite needs to match. Another trick – don’t include the feet if possible. Plan ahead.

composite 2composite 1

3. Simple compositions are often best. Clean and pure. Follows my photo motto: Simplify.

Fish Market

4. Foreground elements help to balance a composition. Choose them wisely. Use leading lines to draw the eye into the photo.

Or just look for patterns and colors.

Times Square steps

5. Location, location, location. True in photography as it is in real estate. Choose a great location and a landmark of that location to be the key focus. This is an infra red pannoramic shot vertically at Pepsico in New York.
