An Interesting 1973 Chevy Monte Carlo Ad Shot in Gloucester!

Gloucester has been recently highlighted as the backdrop for many things commercial, including The Amazing Race. Has this always been the case? Check out this ad for the 1973 Chevy Monte Carlo. As you can see the backdrop is the lovely Good Harbor Beach. Chevy gave this bad boy RADIAL TIRES and AN EXTERIOR THAT REFLECTS THE SOPHISTICATION WITHIN! GO AMERICA!

Wait a second????? That guy in the ad looks familiar. I had to investigate further. Wait…. Lets go to the zoom feature. Wow.. It’s no other than our boy Joey C. Definitely makes me question his published age.

What does a $3.99 Lobster Roll look like?

via NYMAG Grubstreet

Song 7.2, the Korean pub that brought you the $5 bulgogi burger, has now introduced the $3.99 lobster roll.
And because Luke’s is doing such swift business down the block, they’re also selling a lobster roll for $3.99 and lobster bisque for $5. Extra lobster will cost you $1.50, and you’ll probably want to go that route — as you can see here, the regular roll comes on a small hot-dog bun that’s grilled on the flattop, and the paltry amount of lobster meat is drenched in wasabi mayo.

Is this the grossest thing you have ever seen? I am glad no one is trying shenanigans like this around here. There will always be super lame spins on the lobster roll, but this is Guinness book of world record LAME! Putting Chowder on a bun and calling it a roll should be punishable by law. Do people who sell this stuff eat food? Please stop the insanity!

As always Joey has the Mrs’s recipe that is a reference for greatness and read roll reviews from my summer trip to Maine.

Go Celtics!

We don’t cover too many Boston sport here since we have our local teams, but you have to be a fan of our current Boston Celtics. The big 3 are fun to watch and simply good people. They continue to bring it every night, except a few nights so they don’t get injured and are ready for the playoffs. You can also argue that after 24 assists on Friday night, Rajon Rondo makes it the big 4. Shaq in Boston is also pure entertainment. Check him posing as a statue in Harvard Square.

Lets stay healthy this year, beat Lebron yet again on the way to the championship and BEAT LA!

Cool Find? At Least I Think So

I am new to the area and love finding cool antiques with the area I live printed on them. When I lived in Brooklyn , it was seltzer bottles. I picked this up on ebay for under 20 bucks with shipping. I don’t stroll into many antique stores so I don’t know if these are in the $2 bin. I loved finding out more about the mail order Frank E. Davis Fish Company, the man behind it and their building at 58 Central Warf. Anyone know anything more about these boxes? rare? Feel free to share here about the company. I wonder where the original hut is.

GMG Pumpkin Carving!

The fam and I put together the first GMG What’s Up Homie Jack-o-Lantern of the season. We encourage the readers to do the same and we will post them here. Send them to Joey and he’ll post them here.

I will answer a few questions up front:

  • It is not a crow
  • It is not a martini glass as Joey C thought
  • It is supposed to be standing on a post and not wearing high tops
  • Yes that’s a sail boat on the right

Check this Halloween lawn display. This is the best I have ever seen. It is on Bridge street in Hamilton.

Joey C Fun Fact of the Day

Here is a little fun fact about Joey C. We all know that he is a such a private man and never shares his life on the internet. Here is just a glimpse of him behind closed doors. What would you think his favorite soft drink is?

Coke or Pepsi? TAB? I bet your first guess wouldn’t be Fresca.  When you sit down at his house it is all that is offered and he will go into how it is so refreshing, yet has zero calories. He will ask you again and again “Sure you don’t want a fresca?”   He also “suggests”  (AKA if he doesn’t get it he throws a fit)  that the places he visits for shoots stock plenty of it on his arrival. Just a fun fact from the fact finders at GMG.

Pirate Party Eastern Point

This past weekend we attended a kids birthday party on Eastern Point. I can’t think of a better setting for a pirate themed party. A real pirate even showed up and I never saw so many kids head for the hills crying! In shocking news, Eastern Point is awesome in fall as well. It was a brisk, yet clear day and you could see all the way to Boston. I got a few cool shots. Parties like this really set the bar pretty high. My 3 year old told me that because of this party she now wants two bouncy houses for her next party.

Simply Edward Hopper!

I stumbled upon a super cool Edward Hopper site that was commissioned by the Julietta House. A screen writer traded a place to stay for finding the Hopper houses in Gloucester.  They now offer a self guided tour available at their front desk. I was surprised that the “now” pictures seemed to fire people up stating “How could they allow this to happen!” Hopper painted 1920’s ordinary scenes and was focused on lighting and space. Ordinary houses get painted, covered in vinyl, torn down and converted into two families.  I do think it would be cool if This Old House would come and restore one of these to as they were when Hopper painted them. It would also make for a great single subject blog, book deal, movie, documentary…

I don’t know much about Art, but I love all things  Hopper. I have ties to his hometown, Nyack NY and always went right to his paintings at the Whitney Museum in NYC. It was great to find out that he found success as a painter  in Gloucester and it was where he met his wife.

Here are some more of Hoppers paintings in Gloucester that are not in the Edward Hopper House Tour. Share anything about Hopper or the locations in the comments. Thanks!

A Barter Available to You

Ever hear the story of the kid who bartered a  free cell phone up to a Porsche or a red paperclip up to a house? Craigslist offers yet another random section under for sale, called barter. Here is a local one available to you:

Bounty Hunter Metal Detector (Gloucester)

I have a $750.00 Bounty Hunter metal detector that I would like to trade for an Ipad tablet. This machine has been used three times and just sits in a closet.I need to trade it for something I can use.I would like to get a 32 gig Apple IPAD for trade.Let me know what you have and we can go from there. Thanks for reading.Comes with bag and two coils and manual.

I have always told my wife,  when I retire I just want an old school lawn chair (you know the ones that you can’t strap on your back) and a metal detector. I will roam the beaches with my headphones on and dream of the big find.  I hope someone takes their Ipad, trades it for the metal detector, finds a huge diamond ring and then buys a house on Good Harbor Beach. With a name like Bounty Hunter were you really expecting a metal detector? I was thinking sawed off shotgun.

Joey – You think you can convince them to go for a Windows 7 Netbook so they can edit video?

Just Announced – Sled Dog Races at Appleton!

The Second Annual Myopia Sled Dog Races was just announced and is changing venues to Appleton Farms. I went to this event last year and it was a big hit with the kids.  The first race of the day is a crazy version of cross country skiing, where folks get pulled by their dogs and insanity ensues. Then the youngsters take the helm and you will be astonished how fast they go. I believe this event will get bigger and better each year, as long as they are lucky with the snow.  Appleton is going to be  a great venue for this and will likely offer better spectator viewing  along the course.

Check out their website and their Facebook page

I hope you are enjoying your extended summer. Just a friendly reminder, don’t forget to change the oil in your snow blower. Winter is right around the corner! Weather folks are predicting wild swings in weather this winter.

Santarpios Just Got A Little Closer

Santarpios, a classic Boston Pizzeria has expanded outside its East Boston landmark location to Peabody. It is right above the Sonic on the Northbound side or Route 1.  Last weekend the family loaded up the minivan and battled Cadillacs for parking spots on their opening weekend. Luckily, we got in right before 5 pm, because when we left there was over an hour and a half wait.

There have been rumors on the opening since July. The delay was due to waiting on an oven from one of the few American manufacturers of large rotating convection ovens. I saw this thing in action it was worth the wait. When they were ready to open, they didn’t call any media outlets, they just put a sign on a utility truck that said “OPEN”.

The decor is clean and simple. The old Bennigans location without the flare. Nothing on the wall except for a few boxing photos. The bar is a family affair and everyone was smiling. The menu is the exact same as the East Boston location. Same awesome pizza and BBQ Sausage/Lamb. Of course comparisons will come to the original and of course there is only one original location. When you go you need to know that you start with a bbq offering of sausage and/or lamb and then pick your pizzas. They offer cold beer, which I have heard goes pretty well with pizza.

I commend Santarpio’s on a successful expansion and thank them for bringing their classic pizza to the North Shore.  My only worry is that people will try to pack in a trip to Santarpio’s and then Sonic for the tater tots. Check out the new location and the “Food Fueds” episode coming to the Food Network on October 14th, where Santarpio’s battles another Boston legend, Pizzeria Regina.

GMG’s Newest Homie

I wanted to introduce myself and say thanks to Joey C for asking me to join the GMG crew. The bad part for the reader is that I am not a former greasy pole champion, just a 3 time attendee, and everything I know about Gloucester I learned from this blog.  The truth is I moved to the North Shore 3 years ago from Brooklyn and am just starting to scratch the surface for everything Gloucester. I love to get the family out to all sorts of events in Gloucester and beyond. I am really looking forward to covering all sorts of random things around the area and posting here.

This past weekend, I was excited to check out the Soap box derby, but got outvoted by my wife and 2 girls for a local Farm day. That’s my life and it also means I don’t have anything for you yet. I’ll keep trying -Stay tuned.

Thanks – Patrick R.
