Block Party rainbow; camera woes
Just at sunset during the latest block party, there was a mild rain shower, and this glorious rainbow appeared. I managed to snap a shot, despite the fact that my camera was staring to malfunction.
This one came out OK, but many of my photos have started to be underexposed or just plain black (despite being on the right settings, even in the automatic mode). I need to either repair or replace the camera… Anybody know of a place nearby where I can get a Sony camera repaired? It’s not under warrantee anymore (it’s a year and a half old, and – silly me – I didn’t get an extended warrantee), so Sony will charge me a flat fee of $250 to repair it. Buying a brand new camera body of the same kind would cost $500. I’m torn between repairing it – it’s a great camera! – and upgrading to a new model…

Elizabeth Gauthier Gallery
During the block party, I discovered that a new gallery has opened on Main Street! The sign isn’t up yet, but it showcases the work (in several different artistic media) of Elizabeth Gauthier – hence, the name “Gauthier Gallery.”
The gallery mostly contains her own work, but also some work by her sister. Besides oil and acrylic paintings, she paints custom t-shirts!
Is that cool or what? Here is the artist with some of her work:
During our conversation, she mentioned that she plans on teaching as well as doing her own paintings. As I mentioned before, her sign isn’t up yet, but the gallery is actually on Main Street in Gloucester, between Sal’s Barber Shop and the Compass Rose tattoo place (right in the middle of the photo below):

“The Sing” at The Annie
Come join the fun at The Annie every Wednesday night at 7PM for two and a half hours of musical sharing. We sit in a circle in the Art Parlor and take turns singing (or playing acoustic instruments, or both), and if others know the song, they join in. All genres are welcome! Prior experience singing in public is NOT necessary – it’s just about sharing our love for music, whether you are a pro, or usually only sing in the shower… It’s a very informal setting. People can also bring snacks or beverages to share. There is a $5 recommended donation per person. We have a pretty steady group of regulars, but there is also many people who come whenever their schedule allows. Here are some photos from past “sings”:

After Hours at the Cape Ann Museum
If you were not at the Cape Ann Museum Summer “After Hours” event last Thursday, August 16, you really missed out! This museum is one of the under-recognized jewels in Cape Ann’s cultural crown.
There was great music, great food from Alchemy, live music/dance pieces featuring Sara Slifer, Kristen Miller, and 3rian King… and the personable staff and breathtaking art that you can always find at the Cape Ann Museum. Here are some photos.

Elyssa East, author of Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England Ghost Town, will discuss Hartley’s sixteen-year relationship with Cape Ann and how it changed his life and work. $10 Museum members; $15 nonmembers. Taekwondo on the streets
Now that I am back from my retreat, I need to catch up on processing photos from the previous weekend – including a selection of shots from Demetri’s Taekwondo Academy demonstration at the street bazaar. The kid in the photo (above) impressed me by splitting a board with one blow… I’ll post more of these cool taekwondo moves throughout the week!

Pizza from Mike’s Place
First, thanks to those who prayed for me this week while I was on retreat. I got a good spiritual boost!
This evening, after my return, Fr. John Kiley (the pastor) and I decided to have pizza for dinner. We have a sort of tradition of getting onion & roasted red pepper pizza from Sebastian’s (58 Washington Street). However, after six phone calls I still could not get through to them, so we decided to try the same kind of pizza, but from Mike’s Place this time. I’ve read good reviews here on GMG and elsewhere, and it’s right around the corner from the rectory.
The pizza was ready on time, fresh and hot, and the staff were busy but friendly.
It tasted as good as it looked. It was especially good with a bottle of Gloucester Soda which I bought at the street bazaar.
In short, since the pizza was great, and the location is very convenient with respect to the parish rectory (and they have sufficient parking), Fr. John and I will probably start to frequent Mike’s Place more often!

Food Drive and Bake Sale – St. Vincent de Paul Society
Don’t forget this note from Helen Downey:
Come join us at Shaw’s Plaza, 127 Easter Ave., Gloucester, as the members of Holy Family Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society conduct a “Food Drive and Bake Sale” on Saturday, August 11 from 9am to 3pm.
The Society, through dedicated volunteer efforts, services the needs of many families here on Cape Ann. We succeed in doing this only with donations of monetary value or food donations for our emergency pantry.
Shaw’s is a great supporter of community projects and we have been chosen to be the recipient of any profits received through their participation in this event. So come on over and have lunch at the concession or perhaps a home-baked goodie from the many delicious items made by our members. Hope to see you there on August 11th to support our fund raising event.
