Last night, Passports held their first “community dinner night.” Ten percent of the evening’s total receipts will be donated to the League of Women Voters scholarship fund. Judging by the fun had by patrons as well as from the staff’s enthusiasm, Passports’s community dinner event was surely the first of many more to come!
Each Tuesday night, Passports is available for an event to raise funds and awareness for a worthy cause. The worthy cause need not be a non-profit organization. Eric Lorden, Passports’s owner and chef, explains that this is one way in which he can give back to the community that has supported his business for over two decades. February 12th of this year marked Passports Restaurant’s twentieth year in business!
What makes Passports’s community dinners unique is that in addition to having the option to order from the regular menu, guests are invited to order from the very specially priced fifteen dollar three course dinner. For the League of Women Voters event, the prix fixe menu included choice of soup or salad, steak or bouillabaisse, and the option to choose from any one of Passports’s regular menu dessert items. It is worth repeating that diners can order from either the regular menu or the prix fixe menu.

He typically plays much larger venues, especially when performing with bands like New Multitudes and Monsters of Folk (with Jim James, Conner Oberst, and M. Ward!) who typically play theaters and stadiums. This will be a very intimate and special performace–just Will and his guitar. Sculpture meetingDear Friends:
The meeting that was to have been held this Saturday, April 11, on the location of the proposed sculpture by renowned artist David Black at Solomon Jacobs Park has been cancelled.
The mayor has indicated she wants to have a full discussion of a City arts policy before making a decision on how to proceed with the acceptance and installation of David’s generous gift.
A city-wide forum to begin the process of developing the arts policy will be held in May. I encourage you to attend that meeting and be heard on the matter. I will provide further details as they are available. For now, however, the project is on hold.
Thank you all for your attention to this matter and your care for our city.
The swans are returning to Cape Ann ponds and marshes!
During periods of extremely cold weather Mute Swans depart our region to search for vegetation to forage for at unfrozen bodies of water. The deep freeze of this past winter was especially difficult for our feathered friends.
Note the fleshy black knob at the base of the bill. For most of the year, the male and female’s knobs are about the same size. During mating season, which we are coming in to, it is much easier to do a side-by-side identification to determine if cob or pen because the male’s knob swells and becomes more prominent.

Swans use their large feet as both rudder and paddle when diving for vegetation.
Mute Swans have 23 separate vertebrate in their necks, which is more than any other bird, including other swan species.

Did you know that chickens eat their own pooh, and other chicken’s pooh as well? You can see one of the chicks doing just that in the Vine below.
The first time the food passes through the gut it is not fully digested. Many species that eat primarily vegetation eat their own pooh to recover nutrients. Herbage can be a tough substance to breakdown. Vegetating-eating animals have evolved to either have several stomachs, a cow, for example, or to eat their own feces and digest it again.

Annually for the past nine years, the Washington Post has sponsored a Peeps Diorama competition, made with marshmallow peeps. This year’s PEEPles choice award went to “Peepalize It” created by Michael Romanyshyn.
The dioramas are oftentimes politically satirical and ripped from the headlines. This year one of the finalists included “White House Trespeepers,” highlighting the theme of government incompetence specifically as it relates to embarrassing incidents involving the Secret Service.

The beautiful, beautiful Easter desserts and confections are all hand made by Maria Cracchiolo, including the marzipan lambs! The refrigerator was bursting with special orders and it was a treat to see Maria’s lovely (and wonderfully delicious) Cassata Siciliana in a range of sizes.
Maria’s family is oftentimes there, hard at work alongside her, and especially during the holidays. Pictured with Maria is her husband, Giuseppe Cracchiolo.
