Mumford & Sons won album of the year for “Babel,” Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” won record of the year and Fun. took home the best new artist award. If you have not heard any of these you need to check them out. Last year at this time I was on the phone with Levon Helm’s manager discussing final arrangements for Levon Helm to come to North Shore Music Theatre on 7/7/12, then he passed in April. We were working on getting Fun. to Gloucester this summer but by October of 2012 they were already booked a year in advance. We will keep trying . . .

Kudos to all the venue owners who opened up last night and are opening today — and to the performers who got themselves shoveled out and on stage so we can celebrate NEMO with music!
The Landing opened last night and Chelsea Berry got herself down there to perform for a good crowd. Guess NEMO was nothing special compared to what she grew up with in Alaska.
Landing is open again tonight and Will Hunt will host an open mic.
Gloucester’s parking ban will be lifted at 6:00 tonight, so we can all get out and party. Several shows are cancelled, but there’s still plenty to do thanks to our intrepid venue owners and performers. BOSTON (AP) — BOSTON — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency and banned travel on roads as of 4 p.m. as a blizzard that could bring nearly 3 feet of snow to the region began to intensify.
Patrick said as the storm gains strength it will bring ‘‘extremely dangerous conditions’’ with bands of snow dropping up to two to three inches per hour at the height of the blizzard, prompting whiteout conditions.
Patrick said the travel ban will apply statewide and bans all motor vehicle traffic until it is lifted. The ban doesn’t apply to public safety workers and utility workers.
The MBTA is canceling all services as of 3:30 p.m.

Regrettably, the coming storm has made it necessary to cancel both the Friday and Saturday Chelsea Berry concerts at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. The shows have been rescheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 1st and 2nd and tickets will be honored for those performances. If you are unable to attend those shows, Rockport Music will issue refunds on previously purchased tickets.

Due to the impeding inclement weather, Rockport Music announces that both concerts this weekend (Friday, February 8 & Saturday, February 9) with singer-songwriter Chelsea Berry are re-scheduled for Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd.
Ticketholders will be contacted via email by the Rockport Music Box Office next week to exchange tickets. Please note: The Box Office will be closed on Friday, due to the weather. Please check our homepage for updates on other concerts this weekend.

Everybody’s looking for somebody to blame — especially for last night. First there’s the power outage. Even though the official line still makes vague reference to an “abnormality”, you can bet people are scrambling to nail somebody’s ass — or “hold them accountable” to use the latest PC term.
Then there’s Beyoncé. Joey may have liked her lip-synched dance numbers, but Vickie and I have to agree with venerable music curmudgeon, Bob Lefsetz, who said, “I wasn’t sure what to do after Beyonce’s appearance, join a gym or masturbate.” (We know Joey’s done the former. What about the latter, Joey?)
Singers love to lay blame. Usually they blame somebody else, like when Beyoncé admonishes “you should have put a ring on it.” Once in a while somebody writes a great song blaming himself. Of those, my favorite is Guilty by Randy Newman, sung here perfectly by Bonnie Raitt.
You’ll be blaming yourself big time if you don’t get VIP tickets to see Henri Smith featuring Charles Neville this Friday. It’s the best dinner / show / Mardi Gras party deal around. Best of all, you can avoid feeling guilty because you’ll be helping to send local YMCA Teens on their service-learning trip to New Orleans in April. Oh, and Henri won’t be lip-synching.
The older I get the more I realize that casting blame feels good, but doesn’t accomplish much — sort of like masturbating.
Blame is best left to songs. Chelsea Berry knows how to write a great song that lays blame. And you can bet she won’t lip-synch when she sings it at her Shalin Liu concerts.

Last Mardi Gras (2/21/12) after a brief studio intro, we took the cameras and crew to Minglewood Tavern to film Henri Smith’s excellent band featuring Charles Neville at a Mardi Gras fundraiser for the Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans trip. The result is a high energy concert and interview with Henri Smith and Charles Neville in Latitude 43’s super comfy lounge area. This special show airs tomorrow (SUN) at 6pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 and again WED 2/6 at 6:30pm

For Mardi Gras 2013, Henri Smith and his band featuring Charles Neville will perform their Y Benefit concert at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly this Friday, February 8th at 7:30pm. I was at an events planning meeting with City of Gloucester officials yesterday (more on why I was there in another post coming soon) and so were some very interesting people from Olin College of Engineering, including their marketing person, Michelle Davis, who sent this news release along about Sailbot June 9-13, 2013. Now this I want to see!

New One-Meter Class Added to 2013 Sailbot Regatta
Olin College of Engineering has partnered with the City of Gloucester to co-host the 7th International Robotic Sailing Regatta, known as Sailbot, on June 9-13, 2013, in Gloucester, Mass.
The global robotic sailing competition began in 2006 as a senior project at the University of British Columbia. The contest challenges student teams to design and build robotic sailboats capable of five on-water challenges which test the speed, maneuverability and navigational capabilities within the environmental variables. In addition, each team will present the innovative and dynamic methods used in the design and manufacturing process in detail.
In addition to a two-meter Class and an Open Class (for boats up to four meters), a one-meter category has also been added. High school teams are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the additional category. The deadline for teams to indicate an intention to compete in the regatta is February 15th, 2013. Interested parties can email sailbot2013@gmail.com, and they will then receive proper registration materials once they indicate their participation. “We are very excited to be partnering with the City of Gloucester to bring this event to the Northeast,” said Drew Bennett, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Olin. “There is a rich history of maritime innovation in Gloucester and a desire to learn more about how the local community can leverage that experience to find solutions for our oceanographic landscape in the 21st century. Sailbot is the perfect opportunity to provide a fun, educational challenge for students interested in the future of our Oceans.”
Autonomous watercraft technologies hold the potential to further advancements in national security and marine biology. Currently, the military and private sectors utilize a hybrid mix of manually operated and autonomous watercraft, but the production of fully unmanned oceanic vehicles, such as Sailbots, is now on the brink of reality. The ability to use self-guided robotic watercraft for coastal surveillance missions as well as water pollution sourcing, oil spill recovery and tsunami warning eliminates the human risk typically associated with these tasks. Furthermore, the monitoring of marine animals will be greatly enhanced by this technology, allowing for passive observation of behaviors such as migration routes and pairing sites.
Despite being rookies to the regatta, Olin College took second place overall last June with their boat “Blackbody Radiation” and also received special commendation for their success in the navigational portion of the contest. The team’s success was also recognized by one of its sponsors, National Instruments; team representatives Jaime McCandless ‘11 and Jason Curtis ‘11, along with faculty members Drew Bennett and Dave Barrett, were selected to give a keynote presentation about Sailbot at National Instruments Week 2012 (NI Week).
