What to do with the kids this weekend

This week’s snowstorm will keep the kids busy outside building snow forts and sledding.  When they’re ready to do something else (or you are!),  here are some ideas for warm activities.  Check back often.  I’ll  add more information as I receive it!

And don’t forget – If you have kids, you’d better start Flapping like a Haddock!

Tired of your car? Change the look!

dsc_5634

I was in Walgreen’s parking lot a couple of days ago and saw this car. I was curious about the process of getting a car to look like that so I waited for the owner to come back.

Turns out it was Bill Liacano’s wife Alexia’s (from Seaside Graphics) car and she told me how they do it. I asked her if I could (or Joey) could come down when they actually did the process and she said sure. Her car is actually gold so the whole look of the car has changed.  Here’s an example of a company that also does this just to show what they do at Seaside.  Pretty cool!

Slingdaddy Debut!

These guys are good friends of mine and veterans of other Gloucester bands. This looks like a scene right out of the Alfred Hitchcock movie. I can’t help it, but I was scared just sitting in my car watching this yesterday. Doesn’t take much though!

Just for Fun!It’s another Joey!

dsc_46531Here’s Joey Palmisano…Champion of the Children’s Games on Fiesta Saturday….blueberry pies, watermelon, and EGGS! He always does an amazing job with all those kids. All around good guy!

Where Zat? Give up?

It’s  on the right on Eastern Pt. going out toward the lighthouse right where you can turn left to go to Niles Pond or go straight to go to the breakwater.

Guess that was a toughie!!

A Taste of Summer

It’s only 3 months away. Once this snow melts, we’ll be able to believe that summer will actually come again with the Red Sox, ice cream at the Cupboard after supper, walks on Good Harbor, and of course, FIESTA! Here’s a little teaser of good things to come! Enjoy!

lowe-windowCharles A. Lowe Photos: Gloucester 1975

Charlie Lowe was a deceptively great artist possessed unconsciously,
with an extraordinary ability to universalize what he saw in life.  It was
given to him, through his eyes to open ours. His wondrous images guide
us to the perception of something around us, in others, in ourselves,
that was truthful, essential, natural, optimistic I think, poignantly
human, and the essence of our Gloucester.
Joe Garland, foreword essay to Lowe’s book A Portrait of Gloucester, 1983.

From the archives of the Museum, a selection of Gloucester photos from the year 1975 by Charles A. Lowe, photographer for the Gloucester Daily Times from 1957 -1981.
The exhibition is organized by former editor of the Gloucester Daily Times, Peter Watson, and Fred Buck, photo archivist for the Museum.

**An 80 page exhibition catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
It is for sale through the Museum Shop for $25.00.

Copies of photographs from the Charles A. Lowe Archives are also available for purchase. Call the Museum’s Library/Archives for more information,
(978) 283-0455, ext. 19.

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Remarks at 3:30 p.m.

Slide presentation with Peter Watson, former editor, The Gloucester Daily Times
Saturday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Support for this exhibition is generously provided by
the Cape Ann Savings Bank,
the Gloucester Daily Times and the Cricket Press.

Where Zat? Now do you know?

Here’s the whole photo. Before I reveal where it is,  a few clues.

1. It’s past Niles Beach.

2. You can see it from the road, but not the main road.

3. Look to your right on the way to the light.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. there is no one alive who is youer than you.” Anyone know which Dr. Seuss book that’s from?

Well, school’s closed today because of the weather. It’s Dr. Seuss’s birthday and I found lots of activities to do with the kids. Those books, as annoying as they were to read night after night, entertained us all and we learned about life in the process. Share a book with someone today!

Check out the Dr. Seuss activities and to find out which book the quote is from.  To view more family-friendly stuff happening this week on Cape Ann, you’ll need to start Flapping like a Haddock!

Good day for making chili!

chili

If you’re looking for something to do with the family   today and you don’t feel like venturing out, here’s a great recipe you can improvise and involve the kids. It’s a favorite in my family!

But first ya gotta start Flapping like a Haddock!

Gravestone in Backyard

dsc_5545We’ve been doing some research on this small gravestone in our rental property on Wall St. It has it’s own raised up plot with a wall surrounding the built-up area. And it’s level with the kitchen window, so every morning we’re face to face with Maria.

We’ve asked the landlord and he thinks it may have been a pet, but pets don’t usually have first and last names or live for 85 or so years.

The engraving is somewhat difficult to read unless the light is just right. What I think it says is “Maria Niemi    y26-6-1842     t 3-9-1927”

We’re  curious  as to who she was and  the history behind the gravestone.

Anyone have any ideas or where we might look to find out?

At least we’d know who’s peeking in the window!     —-Sharon

Flapping like a Haddock

yellow-fishI’m adding new info to Flapping like a Haddock all the time. Please feel free to send me updates and things that are happening for families around the Cape.

Each week I look through the Times and Beacon for activities to keep kids busy and occupied. I’m especially looking for low or no cost fun things that families can share together. Please  send me your upcoming or on-going family oriented stuff to do, suggestions,  or interesting articles.

And remember to start FLAPPING LIKE A HADDOCK!

Thanks!!   —Sharonsmiley-hat1
