26th Annual Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show

The quiet village of Annisquam comes alive each Columbus Day weekend (for the past 26 years!) when it presents the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show. This weekend, celebrate the spirit of Christopher Columbus by exploring…an ideal starting place is the Village Hall in Annisquam at 34 Leonard Street. Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9 (10AM-5PM).

Forty local North Shore and New England artists and artisans will be displaying and selling their handcrafted items which include pottery, jewelry, fabric arts, children’s toys, jams, photographs and paintings.

A few of the local artists displaying their special visions are Ann Ziergiebel, Anne Marie Crotty and Laurie Fielding. Margaret Derby will show her luxurious and colorful scarves from unique fabrics while Camilla MacFayden will offer her exotic seaweed printed silk scarves and nature inspired T shirts. Illustrator Penny Neal will share her whimsical animal prints and note cards, and Kenn Tarr – “Gramps in the Attic” – will lure other grandparents to invest in wooden toys for their grandchildren. Fans of ceramicist Helen Beal, can look forward to a new design. Pearce Design will tempt you with their classic and contemporary jewelry designs. These and many other exhibitors’ work will captivate and reward you for your search.  And did you know that Annisquam/Rocky Neck artist and Good Morning Gloucester contributor, E.J. Lefavour will be exhibiting her work there too?

This much anticipated annual event brings you a chance to discover new worlds of art, a new way to interpret the world around you, a sense of adventure, AND a head start on holiday shopping! A portion of the proceeds from all sales will go to the Annisquam Village Church, Cape Ann’s historic Third Parish, established in 1728. There is no entrance fee and the facility is wheelchair accessible.

It’s a great time of year to visit Annisquam, and the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show is a great reason to visit.

And The Winners Were

It was an insane time this morning at Mug Up and the First Annual GMG Bloody Mary Competition.  And this winners are:  1st Place, Kathy Chapman says of her winning recipe “lots of horseradish, lemon, worcestershire sauce and pickles homemade from my garden.”  She presented the drink in vintage cocktail glasses with dill pickle slices and flowers as garnish.  2nd Place went to Richard Rosenfeld of Rocky Neck who used Mrs. T’s with added lemon and tabasco.  The People’s Choice winner was Talitha Jackson whose drink came in a mason jar “fresh from her garden and canned with love”.  All entrants mixed up mean batches of Bloody Mary’s and the judges had a really difficult time picking, as did the People’s Choice award people, so congratulations to all who partcipated.

We’ve had alot of fun this summer at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck, and look forward to doing it again next year.  In the meantime, the gallery will remain open through Columbus Day with lots of great gift items available and on sale.

THIS MORNING!!!! 10AM The Season Grand Finale Mug Up and Ryan & Woods Distilleries sponsored Bloody Mary Competition on Rocky Neck

The Season Grand Finale Mug Up and Ryan & Woods Distilleries sponsored Bloody Mary Competition on Rocky Neck (in case you didn’t already see it, forgot about it, or are on the fence about it), will be on Sunday, October 2 at 10:00 am.  Bob Ryan has very generously donated some awesome prizes for the creators of the winning Bloody Mary entries, including coasters, t-shirts, and Ryan & Woods Beauport Vodka (!!).  Also, for those planning to enter a Bloody Mary mix, so that we level the playing field and judging is based solely on presentation and mix, and no drink is heavy handed on the alcohol (it will be 10:00 am after all, and we have to protect our judges from inebriation), Beauport Vodka will be conservatively added to all mixes here before they go to the judges and attendees.  So no one has to go out and buy vodka and everyone’s entries will be made with only the best locally distilled Ryan and Woods Beauport Vodka.  Entrants only need bring a container of their best Bloody Mary mix creation and a glass with preferred garnishes for presentation to the judges.  In the best interest of judging time and the judges’ alcohol levels, we will limit the number of entries to eight.  Of course, entrants must be 21 years of age or older.  As always at Mug Up, there will be plenty of great coffee, deviled eggs and whatever other Mug Up type fare people bring along to share. Always a good time and everyone is welcome at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck at Madfish Wharf.  10:00 am

Finally, there will be a Big Blow Out End of Season and Early Holiday Shopping Sale at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery from Saturday, 10/1 through Columbus Day, 10/10.  There will be many items under $20 to choose from.  Wendie Demuth Photography Gallery next door will also be slashing prices and she and other Madfish Wharf denizens have many great furniture pieces, clothes, household items, fishing gear and more for sale under the tent at Madfish Grille.  Plenty of free parking, and it is such a pretty and cool place to visit.  Other galleries and shops on Rocky Neck are still open too, so it’s a great time to visit and do some local unique holiday shopping while supporting your local art community.

Schooner Highlander Sea at Marine Railways

The 1924 Essex built schooner, Highlander Sea, Ex PILOT, docked at the Marine Railways this afternoon, and plans to stay the winter.  She is tied up alongside our Schooner Adventure.  If you have a chance, stop by and see them both today.  Then stop by Madfish Wharf and check out the major end of season sales in the galleries, and major household furnishings and stuff sale under the tent at Madfish Grille.

HIGHLANDER SEA is a beautiful 154-foot luxury sailing yacht, built in Essex in 1924 by John F James.  She has also been called Pilot, Star Pilot and Caledonia.  She is a classic twin masted schooner who can accommodate a total of 10 people on board, and has a crew of approximately 6.

Did You Know? (Joan Kerry)

That Joan Kerry was born in London, July 27, 1929 and died October 5, 1996 on Rocky Neck in Gloucester?  She grew up in the Seattle area, attended Washington State University, and graduated from the Museum School at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1958.  Kerry also studied in Tuscany and Sicily.

She lived on Rocky with her companion and artist colleague, Giovanni Aceto in this house.  Kerry was an expert in the ancient medium of egg tempera, and developed innovative techniques for oil pastels, which were described by Gloucester artist Charles Movalli in a July, 1984 article in American Artist

On Rocky Neck her garden delighted passers-by, who would stop and chat, and inspired many artists to paint its lilies, pink poppies and wisteria vines.

Kerry was very active in the arts organizations of the Cape Ann area.  She was a member of the Rockport Art Association from 1977-1996, and was also active in the Rocky Neck Art Colony and a director of the North Shore Arts Association.  In 1971 she was the manager of the Rocky Neck Gallery in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

In addition to local awards, she had received awards from the Oil Pastel Association at Nyack-on-Hudson, N.Y., the Pen and Brush Club of New York City, and Arena 77 of Binghamton, New York.  The Christian Science Monitor had described the “brilliance, color, and imagination” of her work, and Long Island reviewer Malcolm Preston wrote of her paintings displaying a “dreamlike fantasy with intricate, sinewy rhythms.”

Kerry died in Gloucester on October 5, 1996 at age 67.  This is one of her paintings.

Final Mug Up, Bloody Mary Competition & End of Season Blow Out

We had a great turnout for our next to last Mug Up with Joey C. and some contributors and regulars (Paul Morrison & R.Duck, Paul Frontiero, Donna Ardizzoni and Ed Collard), and new and old friends.  Karen Hanson from Quincy came with Kathy Downer from Rockport, newcomers Mike and Eva DiLascio who moved to Gloucester in July, guest “Out of Africa” artists, Judith Monteferrante, Roger Salisbury and Rich Seeley and his wife Beth, neighbor Richard Rosenfeld, Bob Ryan (with great presents in hand).  Sista Felicia and Amanda arrived with an out of this world still warm apple spice cake (Joey and Felicia’s grandmother’s recipe – see the two of them photographing the cake before it was all gone).  A couple of friends of the blog from FL, Barbara and Gerry McAllister, flew in to experience a Mug Up – great to have you with us.  I’m sorry if I missed anyone.

The Season Grand Finale Mug Up and Ryan & Woods Distilleries sponsored Bloody Mary Competition (yep, we have raised the bar way up) at Rocky Neck, will be on Sunday, October 2. So no one has to go out and buy vodka and everyone’s entries will be made with only the best locally distilled Ryan & Woods Beauport Vodka.  Entrants only need bring a container of their best Bloody Mary mix creation and a glass with preferred garnishes for presentation to the judges.  In the best interest of judging time and the judges’ alcohol levels, we will limit the number of entries to six.  Of course, entrants must be 21 years of age or older.  As always at Mug Up, there will be plenty of great coffee, deviled eggs and whatever Mug Up type fare people bring along to share.  Always a good time and everyone is welcome at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck at Madfish Wharf.  This will be the final Mug Up for the season on Rocky Neck, so don’t miss it.

Finally, there will be a Big Blow Out End of Season and Early Holiday Shopping Sale at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery from Saturday, 10/1 through Columbus Day, 10/10.  Everything will be discounted off the already lowered end of season prices, and there will be many items under $20 to choose from.  Wendie Demuth Photography Gallery next door will also be slashing prices and have many great furniture pieces and household items for sale.  Plenty of free parking, and it is such a pretty and cool place to visit.  Other galleries and shops on Rocky Neck are still open too, so it’s a great time to visit and do some local unique holiday shopping while supporting your local art community.  Special note: After 25 years on Rocky Neck, Joe Weiler Photography will be closing for good as of the end of business on Saturday, October 1.  If you have always wanted one of Joe’s beautiful B&W photographs, this is your last chance.

Out of Africa – A Big Hit

Photos by E.J.

The Opening of the Out of Africa exhibit of photography and paintings by Judith Monteferrante, Rich Seeley and Roger Salisbury was a big hit, and an amazing grand finale guest artists exhibit opening for the first season of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck. We have never had so many people packed inside and waiting outside the Gallery for an event this season – and we’ve had many very well attended events. A gallery talk was scheduled for 6:00 pm, but the crowd was so thick that it was impossible for the artists to even consider giving a talk. Neighbors watching the flow of people in and out, estimated visitors throughout the evening at between 150 and 200 people. Kudos to the Gloucester Daily Times for putting the opening info on the front page of Saturday’s paper, as many people who came said they had learned about it from the Times. For those of you who wanted to see the exhibit but couldn’t make it to the opening, or those who came but couldn’t see the work because of all the people, the show will be up through October 6, so please come back and see the exhibit daily from noon to 8:00 pm. There are also videos of the animals and a digital frame with a slideshow of many of the photos taken but not physically exhibited in the gallery. This exhibit is truly a great adventure, an African safari that you can vicariously experience through these artists’ work. Don’t miss it.

Did You Know? (Mug Ups on Rocky Neck are Nearing an End)

Photos by E.J.

So don’t miss Mug Up this Sunday, 9/25 at 10:00, 77 Rocky Neck, Gallery 3 on Madfish Wharf.  Last week’s Mug Up included a visit from the Ardelle and the First Annual GMG Lobster Roll Competition, judged by Dani Lubber, Kim Smith, Sister Felicia and Wendie Demuth.  First Place went to Stevie Black who says: “I’m one of those foodies that happily works from recipes and will try just about every culinary type and technique.  Then it’s a process of reworking and evolving that recipe until it is something different and truly mine.  These (the winning) lobster rolls are the culmination of 100’s of versions, but remain quite straightforward – all ingredients are there to enhance the lobster and the joy of eating one.”  Second Place went to Joanne Souza who says: “Growing up in Rockport, lobster was breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Cilantro is the key.  No such thing as Miracle Whip in my house.  Only Cains.”  I came in Third, out of three entries, and my lobster roll consisted of lobster tails on butter drenched toasted rolls, nothing more, nothing less.  There were a bunch of people and a lot of food, but in the chaos of getting everyone organized for the competition and running down to visit the Ardelle, I didn’t make note of everything and everyone.  Here are some photos.

Also, a reminder that the Grand Finale Mug Up on October 2nd, will include the First Annual GMG Bloody Mary Competition.  Judges will include Fred “Reigning ATGA Champ” Bodin (replacing Mayor Kirk who has a campaign breakfast conflict), Charity “I might look sweet but I love Bloody Marys” Ciaramitaro, Maureen “I’ve seen my fair share of the bottoms of Bloody Mary glasses” Malloy, and Wendie “It must be 5:00pm somewhere” Demuth (whose idea it was to do a Bloody Mary Competition and was the first one to volunteer to be a judge).  So start refining your recipes (Bob Ryan, we are looking for an entry from you with your Beauport Vodka).  Stevie Black has already announced that he is having things “shipped in” for his Bloody Mary entry (and take home the 3rd blue ribbon – he and partner, Gigi Mederos won the deviled egg competition as well), and Madfish’s Chef Jeff is looking to go head to head with him, so we need a herd of dark horses to arrive on the scene and shake things up a bit.

Even if you don’t like Bloody Marys, there will be deviled eggs, coffee and whatever else people bring to contribute to the event (which is always a cornucopia of great stuff), so come and have a great time  – everyone is welcome and there’s no problem parking down here now.  Don’t let the season end with you saying to yourself that you always wished you’d gone to a GMG Mug Up.

The OUT OF AFRICA exhibit will show scenes from Africa – from landscape to wildlife, as captured by photography, pastel and oil by artists Judith Monteferrante, Roger Salbury and Rich Seeley; whose private African safari this summer took them to the Masai Mara during the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the natural wonders of the world, with dense populations of predators.  Highlights include their visit to Lake Nakuru with its large flamingo and pelican population, big cats (lions, leopards and cheetah) at the Samburu National Park and elephants at the Amboseli National Park in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.  Please come share this adventure with them.

Did You Know? (Ziggy’s Dad Died)

That Tom Wilson, Sr., writer/creator of the Ziggy cartoon died of pneumonia at a hospital in Cincinnati on Friday.  He was 80.

Wilson got his start as an artist at American Greetings card company in Cleveland, working there for more than 35 years before debuting the character of Ziggy in a 1969 cartoon collection titled “When You’re Not Around.” In 1971, the Ziggy comic strip was launched in 15 newspapers.

Today, Ziggy appears in more than 500 daily and Sunday papers, with the character also featured in books, calendars and greeting cards – not to mention the rubber version one belonging to Violet Gray pictured here in our window box on Rocky Neck.

Wilson’s son, Tom Wilson Jr., took over the strip in 1987, so Ziggy will go on in spite of his creator’s passing.

Special guest at Lobster Roll Competition Mug Up Sunday, September 18

The Pinky Schooner Ardelle (along with Harold Burnham, Laurie Fullerton and Daisy) will be joining us this Sunday at Mug Up for the First Annual Lobster Roll Competition.  She will tie up at Madfish Wharf from 10:00-11:00.  If you haven’t had the chance to see Ardelle up close and personal, this is your chance to see her and meet Harold Burnham of H.A. Burnham Boat Builders, the 28th Burnham to operate a shipyard in Essex since 1819.

Of course, it is also Mug Up and our First Annual Lobster Roll Competition too, so plan to come, bring on your award winning lobster roll entry (optional) and have fun at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck on Madfish Wharf from 10:00 until we’re done.  Everyone is welcome.

Lobster roll judging will begin promptly at 10:20, so if you are an entrant, please be here by 10:00 to give yourself time to grill your buns (if you do that) and do your final preparation for the judging.  I have tons of butter, so don’t bring that unless you use a special kind (I have the Cabots salted variety).  Note: There has been a change in judges.  International Food Judge, Brenda Hill, has had a scheduling conflict, so will be replaced by Eastern Point Lightkeeper, Dani Lubber.  The other two judges will be Sister Felicia and Wendie Demuth.

Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery is open to anyone who wants to join us.  Mug Up type food contributions (whatever you feel like bringing and sharing) are always welcome.  We provide the coffee, deviled eggs and good time.

What If?

Also, the cutest photo of Caton Andrade (Dr. Nicole’s son) in his homemade GMG T swabbing the decks of the Schooner Adventure after Mug Up on Schooner Festival weekend.

And a really nice note from Dr. Nicole:

As promised EJ, sorry for the delay!  Thanks so much for having us at MugUp on Schooner Festival weekend!  It was great to see Paul F, and to meet Ed C, Paul M, Dorothy Englander (LOVE her work!) and finally the infamous Bean!  The Beauport Breakfast was sold out so we came back to the Neck where we visited Brenda at Imagine, then little Caton grabbed the helm and swabbed the deck on the Schooner Adventure and worked up an appetite for lunch at the Studio Restaurant .  We are excited for Trails and Sails Weekend and we have a real wee GMG shirt for representin’ now!  FYI there are also still slots open for the fall nooks and crannies tour at Beauport Sleeper McGann House, I highly recommend!

As you know, Cape Ann Healing Center is very committed to sharing Gloucester as a destination for healing in its art, land, history, resources and people.  We are so grateful for all that you and all the GMG contributors do, we voted daily from every computer in the office.  As promised also attached are fun photos and is the flyer for our YMCA for ALL fundraiser movie What If?  Awakening to Our True Selves at the Cape Ann Community Cinema, next wednesday Sept. 21st.  Doors open at 7, hope to see some GMG fans there, it is a great film, thanks for helping us spread the word!

So hope everyone can turn out for What If? at Cape Ann Community Cinema.  I know after a wild summer on Rocky Neck, I’m certainly ready to start thinking about my health and life in a totally new way.

Paint Factory – Before and After Demo

Photos by E.J.

The first two photos are the same shot taken the morning of the demo and the morning after.  There was still some final demo being done to take the building completely down.  Personally, I like being able to see the character of the building that was hidden behind the falling down shed building (which BTW was a relatively new structure built in the 1930’s vs. the remainder of the manufactory that was built in the 1870’s).  As long as the remaining structures can be restored, our Motif #1 will remain, and in my opinion be the better of the two, because most of it will still be the original versus a rebuilt replica of the original.

Ocean Alliance, who purchased the paint factory, is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 1971 by Roger Payne. Dr. Payne has conducted research on whales in all the oceans of the world, and has been an eloquent spokesman for their welfare for over three decades. In the early 1970s, he was among the first to sound the alarm about the threat of worldwide pollution of the oceans. In the January 1979 issue of National Geographic, Dr. Payne said, “Pollution has replaced the harpoon as a mortal threat to whales, and in its way can be far more deadly.”

Believing that rigorous science and widespread public education are basic requirements for long-term conservation, Dr. Payne founded Ocean Alliance for the purpose of carrying out both these global missions. Ocean Alliance has research partnerships in South America and a research vessel, Odyssey (a 93-foot, steel, ocean-going ketch), that operates in all the world’s oceans from her home base in Gloucester.

That Ocean Alliance owns the paint factory is a fait accompli.  Whether they are able to complete this major restoration project so that the paint factory remains for years to come is yet to be seen.  Rather than bemoaning what is done, we might all be better served by supporting and working with Ocean Alliance to accomplish their goal of restoring this iconic piece of Gloucester’s history and landscape.

If you haven’t walked through the buildings or around the grounds recently, these shots will give you an idea of how much work there is to do, and what has been accomplished so far.

Did You Know? (Gloucester’s Finest Kind Video)

That those good looking men (and one lovely young woman) of the sea featured in the 2012 Gloucester’s Finest Kind Calendar will also be featured on the big screen, as part of a video presentation of Celebrate Gloucester II created by Joey C., at Latitude 43 during the Block Party on Saturday, September 17 at 8:00pm?  If you’re one of the featured fisherman, their friends, family or fellow fishermen, turn out and see them on the big screen (and I mean big; Ed Collard & friends built this amazing 25’ projection screen).

The calendars are available to purchase at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck, Dogtown Book Shop, Willow Rest, Cape Pond Ice, Richdale’s in East Gloucester, and through Christine Sherman at the Northeast Seafood Coalition.  They make great gifts and supplies are limited, so get yours soon.  You can also order them online at http://www.khanstudiointernational.com/gloucester%20fisherman%20calendar.htm if you are not local.
