GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE, BACH ORCHESTRAL CONCERT AT 8:00PM SATURDAY, MAY 21

Rounding out its 2022 Spring Concert Series, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation will present a concert by the Appleton Consort of orchestral works by J.S. Bach on period instruments, Saturday, May 21, at 8:00 p.m. in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church at the corner of Middle and Church Streets.

PRESENTING SOME OF BACH’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ORCHESTRAL WORKS

The program features the Orchestral Suite No. 3 (BWV 1086) and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 (BWV 1050) plus the Violin Concerto in A minor (BWV 1041) and two Sinfonias (from Cantatas BWV 209 and BWV42). The concert is subtitled “An Evening at the Kaffeehaus,” referring to the Zimmerman coffee house in Leipzig where many of Bach’s great secular works were performed. The ensemble is comprised of violin, viola, cello, bass fiddle, flute, oboe, bassoon and harpsichord.

The Appleton Consort is an ensemble of the finest Baroque instrument players from around the country and is conducted by cellist Mark Dupere, Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Dr. Dupere studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where he specialized in Baroque cello and performance practice of the Romantic era. He received his Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting at Michigan State University.  He conducts in the Bach tradition, as a member of the ensemble.  These musicians will delight the audience with authentic sounds, historically-informed performance practice, and great exuberance that will bring these beloved Bach orchestral works to life.

Tickets are available at the door and online: $60 for preferred seating, $40 general, $10 students, and under 12 free. Parking is available on the Green, entered through the stone pillars on Middle Street.  The accessible side entrance with an elevator is located at 10 Church Street. Established in 2015, The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, responsible for historic site preservation plus civic, cultural, and community programs at the iconic Meetinghouse, built in 1806 for the first Universalist congregation in America. A secular organization, separate from the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, the Foundation draws approximately 6,000 visitors annually with its diverse programming while overseeing the major restoration needs of an enduring American symbol of equality, social justice, and freedom of religion. Humpbacks off Shore Road

There was a lot of activity off Shore Road on Tuesday.  Humpbacks were out there near Kettle Island very far out but we could see them.  Wish the photos were better but grateful to see them.

Good Morning kids:

Thanks for last week’s clean on Rogers and Main Street.  Cigarette butts are still a problem.  Any suggestion how to enforce the no littering law?

We are saddened to hear of the temporary hiatus of Cape Ann Farmers Market. Their footing in the Cape Ann community cannot be emulated. We wish them the best as they regroup and gather ground for a 2023 return.
Until then, we hope that you’ll consider visiting Magnolia, Sunday mornings from 10-1, to support our local farms for all your freshest produce shopping, direct from Marshall’s Farm Stand & Greenhouses , Saturn’s Garden LLC and Twin Birch Farm. Our collection of artisans and food entrepreneurs is eager to continue providing for Magnolia and all of Cape Ann for the 2022 season. See you June 5!

CONCERT OF ORIGINAL MUSIC

MARKS HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY,

GLOUCESTER, SUNDAY, MAY 1

 As warfare in Eastern Europe awakens memories of millions of people slaughtered for only who they were, not for what they did, observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day takes place this coming week, including in Gloucester on Sunday, May 1, starting at 3 p.m., in the historic Gloucester Meetinghouse.

There, the nonprofit Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation and Temple Ahavat Achim, Cape Ann’s Jewish congregation, will jointly present a concert of original works for the occasion. The musical centerpiece is the premiere of “The Grip of Evil: the Endurance of Hope,” an orchestral and vocal work by New York City composer and lyricist Leslie Steinweiss, who will conduct his work,

The program also includes a solo written and played by renowned clarinetist Stephen Bates of Manchester, a violin solo by Abigale Reisman, the synagogue’s music director, and narration by professional storyteller Judith Black.

Holocaust Remembrance Day (in Hebrew, Yom HaShoah), originated in Israel in 1951 as a memorial to the estimated six million Jews and other civilian peoples executed during World War II. Over the years its mission has widened to include tribute to an estimated five million others worldwide whose lives were taken with genocidal intent over the 20th Century. The date of Holocaust Remembrance Day varies; in Israel, it is observed this year on April 27.  Business and even road traffic there briefly comes to a stop when sirens sound at 11 a.m., with motorists often leaving their cars to mark the moment together.

Along with the named principals the performers are vocalists Janine Solheim, soprano, and Wes Hunter, tenor, and instrumentalists are Rebecca Hallowell, viola; Anna Seda, cello, and Kathleen Forgac, piano.

The Gloucester concert will be in the 1806 Meetinghouse, home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, on Middle Street at Church Street in downtown Gloucester. Tickets are $45 for premium seating, $30 for general seating, and $10 for students. Full access for those who are physically disabled is at the side entrance at 10 Church Street. Tickets are available at the door or online at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org/events.

Saturday’s One Hour at Time Gang
