Update from the City of Gloucester and Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce – Shop, Stroll and Dine – July 18th

Remember how much fun we have all had at the Block Parties over the years? Well this year we can’t do that so we are trying something different to support our Main Street businesses in a safe way. Pending the approval of the Planning & Development Committee, Main Street will be closed to cars from Pleasant Street to the West End from 5pm-9pm on Saturday, July 18th so that stores and participating restaurants can come out onto the street in what we like to call Shop, Stroll and Dine. It’s a perfect opportunity to come downtown to enjoy one of the most fun and interesting streets on the island and to support our local businesses that are struggling through this pandemic.

There WILL NOT be any music, street performers, outside vendors or other areas for gathering. Face coverings will be recommended and encouraged at all times and required upon entering all establishments. Dinner reservations are strongly recommended at participating restaurants. We are working to create a festive atmosphere while remaining highly cognizant of the need for psychical distancing and careful participation. While we regret that we can’t have a typical Block Party, we know that you understand and will help us create a safe, low-key and fun evening on Main Street.

For updates on what to expect, participating businesses, safety measures, etc., like and follow Gloucester Block Party.

Angel Wings Wellness's avatarCape Ann Wellness

By The American Sleep Association ASA

Researchers discovered that theendocannabinoid systemplays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, sleep, and regulatingcircadian rhythms. Within the endocannabinoid system is a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. The two primary receptors identified are CB1 and CB2.

Cannabinoids attach to these cells and have various effects. As far as how they may affectsleep, some research indicates that the cannabinoid CBD may interact with specific receptors, potentially affecting thesleep/wake cycle.

Additionally, CBD may also decrease anxiety and pain, which can both interfere with restful sleep. By reducing certain symptoms, it’s also possible that sleep may improve.

Stop by todiscuss how CBD may help improve your sleep!

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute's avatarCape Ann Community

Join us on Thursday, July 9th for the final GMGI Science Hour of the season: “GFP: Lighting Up Life” with Nobel Prize winner Martin Chalfie.

In 2008, Dr. Chalfie was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with co-recipients Osamu Shimomura and Roger Tsien for the discovery and development of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). His demonstration of the GFP gene’s capability as a biological marker revolutionized the biological sciences and contributed to major advances in genetics, cell biology, and neurobiology, and to a better understanding of cancer, Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Schooner Festival Cancellation Announcement

michaeldekoster's avatarCape Ann Community

It is with much sadness that we announce the cancellation of the 36th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival. Maritime Gloucester and the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee worked diligently to create alternative options and try to keep this signature celebration going, but the realities of the pandemic and growing concerns for participants and spectators made this a necessary and timely decision.

by Len BurgessThe Gloucester Schooner Festival is one of Cape Ann’s most beloved cultural events. This gathering of schooners, hosted by Maritime Gloucester, is made possible by the volunteer efforts of over 30 people and local organizations who serve as committee members, as well as the many sponsors and donors who fund the event. Raising money and planning for this weekend is a year-long process and we do not take cancelling it lightly!  We had held out hope that there would be a window of opportunity by Labor Day, but it is…

*VIDEO* City of Gloucester Urges Residents to Take Part in 2020 United States Census Survey

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken is urging residents to take care to complete the 2020 U.S. Census Survey.”I cannot stress enough– it is so important that everyone in our city is counted in the census,” Mayor Romeo Theken said. “It’s the only way to ensure our city receives all of the funding we’re eligible for, which means if everyone doesn’t take part, we’ll lose money that could have gone to critical resources, including schools and infrastructure. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey.”The City has crafted informational videos in English, Sicilian, Spanish and Portuguese for residents to view regarding the survey. To view the videos, click here.Every 10 years the census is taken nationwide, and directly affects funding municipalities are awarded from the federal and state governments for schools, roads, public health initiatives and other critical infrastructure needs and services. The census also informs local decisions about transportation needs and emergency readiness. The census also helps determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives and how congressional and state legislative districts are drawn.Everyone who lives in a household needs to be counted, including grandparents, children, members of the extended family and anyone else living under the same roof.People can take the census online here, by phone by calling 844-330-2020, or by completing and mailing the paper form that was mailed to each household.
