Children of Cape Ann Welcome For Free Tours on Thursday, April 22nd
Gloucester, Massachusetts – Hammond Castle Museum will offer three days of events to entertain and educate school-aged children during the week of April 19th to the 23rd, better known as April vacation. The events are as follows:
· Tuesday, April 20st: Knights and Ladies: The History of Heraldry
This program will be offered in two sessions: 11 am and 1 pm.
This educational and hands-on introduction to the history of heraldry is geared towards 5-8 year olds. After a short introduction to heraldry, attendees will design their very own coat of arms using symbols and colors that represent each of them individually. Following will be story time with a book inspired by medieval life. Adults are $20, Children are $10. Available seats are limited. We do ask, given covid capacity restrictions, that only one adult accompanies each group of children. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
· Wednesday, April 21nd The History of the Medieval Arms & Armor
This program will be offered in two sessions: 11 am and 1 pm.
This educational program for middle schoolers will explore the role of arms and armor in the life of the medieval hosted by our enthusiastic experts-in-residence Scott Cordiner, former Museum curator, and John Leysath, curatorial director. Adventurous kids can learn how arms and armor were used and see real life examples. On display will be a number of helmets from the medieval to the Renaissance periods, as well as many other pieces that would typically have been used in that timeframe. This presentation will answer questions about the weight of armor, its durability, and why medieval knights had at least three different types of armor. Available seats are limited. Adults are $20, Children are $10. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
· Thursday, April 22, Cape Ann Kids’ Free Day
The Children of Essex, Gloucester, Magnolia, Manchester and Rockport are welcome to enjoy a free visit to the Museum. Guests will have access to the Great Hall, Dining Room, Library, and War Room which features the recently restored Eric Pape mural and the kitchen. Some sections of the Hammond Castle Museum will be closed to the public as the Museum is still engaged in a historic restoration of the original glass ceiling over the Courtyard. Elementary and middle school aged children living on Cape Ann will be welcomed at no charge. Adult tickets are $10 each. Advance ticket reservations are required. Proof of residency is required.
All of the programs offered during the 2021 season are intended as fundraisers to support the on-going restoration efforts to preserve the nearly century old Castle and Museum for generations to come. Tickets for these events and for general admission, guided tours throughout the season are available at hammondcastle.org.
John Hays Hammond Jr.,known as “The Father of Radio Control,” was one of America’s most prolific inventors and a protégé of Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Built from 1926 through 1929, and incorporated as a museum in 1930, the castle’s architectural style is a mix of a medieval castle, medieval French village, and a Gothic cathedral. It was custom built to encompass Hammond’s private residence, laboratory, and museum quality collection of architectural elements from his travels throughout Europe. Also on display is Hammond’s extensive list of patents, his work with radio control and his work on guided torpedoes for the military.

What is the role of the artist when when faced with the climate crisis? This webinar produced by the Cape Ann Coalition’s Climate Arts Group explores the artist’s role. It begins by celebrates the life and vision of the late Rockport artist and environmental activist Elaine MacGray Starrett with a video “Without Just Grounds”, featuring Elaine reflecting on her “deep concern for the protection of open space and natural resources” and the series of paintings that she created in response to her concerns. Following the screening, Starrett’s daughter, Dr. Amy Bower, an oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, is joined in a lively conversation about art, science and climate change, with Cape Ann environmental 3-D artist Sinikka Nogelo and the nationally-known public artist Mags Harries.

Fellow Gloucester Merchants,
I want to share with you what is happening this spring in our downtown.
The $11,500 donation will support a new hanging basket program on Main Street with self-watering baskets that can hold 2 gallons of water with each watering. The group has also purchased self-watering inserts for the existing ground planters, with the addition of four new ground planters for the upper end of Main Street. New watering tanks will allow volunteers to water the baskets from their vehicles. The plan this year is to install 27 baskets from Tonno to Sage Floral.
The donation is still not enough to cover the cost of the Beautification Initiatives for 2021. We are asking our fellow business owners to help out with a donation to the program. Gloucester and downtown are very fortunate to have a group like Generous Gardner’s volunteering to make Gloucester more welcoming with the beauty of flowers. Please contact Susan Kelly at susan@generousgardeners.org to make a donation.
2. The second item I want to share is Parson Street. As you know Parson Street is a small street in between the Dress Code and the Mermaid shop. The city has won a grant to make Parson Street a more walking friendly, ADA approved entrance to Main Street from Rogers Street. Plans call for new street paving and sidewalks, new lighting, and possible a pedestrian sign that lights up on Rogers Street. Parson Street will become a pedestrian connector from I4C2 parking and downtown. Completion is expected before May 31 of 2021. A great improvement for downtown. Thank you to our Mayor and Jill Cahill from Community development for making the grant possible.
3. The third item I want to bring forward is the city is in the process of permitting outside dining once again this year. If you want to do outside dining and serve alcohol once again, you need to talk to the Building Inspector Billl Sanborn . Bill will guide you thought the process. It is my understanding that the city is going to expand out door dining for this summer.
If you have suggestions on how outdoor dining can be improved on Main Stress now is the time to add to the conversation.
4. The last item I have is the Sidewalk Bazaar. We are hoping to have it once again in some form in August. If the state opens up events like ours than we will move forward. For now we are in a wait and see mode
Thank You
Joe Ciolino
